Cleaning This FILTHY Gibson SG

My best friend just purchased one of his favorite guitars, a Gibson SG! However, not all is well. The guitar arrived absolutely filthy! Leave it to me to clean this gross Gibson SG and turn it as shiny and beautiful as it was the day it left the production line.

great job on getting that thing cleaned up! i was so appalled when you pointed out all the dirt between frets, and when you polished up the frets the difference was INSANE between the cleaned ones and still-dirty ones. whew!

Lemon oil is not a cleaner. Naphtha is. It will eat away the oil and gunk. You don’t want to use lemon oil before this because you are basically pushing the dirt into the pores of the wood. You don’t want to leave it on for 15 minutes as advised in this video. You want to at most do 5 minutes so it absorbs, and then reapply if needed for a second coat. It can leave a film dried on top of the wood if left on too long. I’m glad you are into guitar care and prolonging the instrument!

To deep clean a fingerboard use naphtha (lighter fluid) and wipe on with a paper towel. Really scrub and clean before lemon oil. Lemon oil typically has some of this effect but if there’s a lot of gunk it’s usually not enough. Lemon oil is good for cleaning and sometimes it helps to really scrub with a towel then redo.

Lemon oil is not a cleaner. It’s a conditioner. You’re pushing the dirt into the pores that way.

@@intoit1074 it usually contains some naphtha so it does clean but not very well. It’s better than nothing but not great at cleaning like pure naphtha.

@@jamesmarkham7489 I’d use pure naphtha. Every guitar tech and luthier will advise to separate with a cleaning agent then a restorative to condition and hydrate. Of course people can do what they like with their guitars. Just throwing my opinion in. Been playing and collecting 35 years.

@@intoit1074 I’ve had quite a few students who never cleaned their fretboard ever. So just getting lemon oil on was a win imo. I also worked at a music store where we had to convince people to clean/ hydrate boards. You’d think we were selling them a pyramid scheme. No one would believe us.
