Clearing Clogged Caravan Grey Water Pipes

My caravan grey water pipes have slowly become clogged. The advice I get is to taken apart the grey water pipes and manually cleaned them one by one. It's a really gross job and I'm extremely thankful to have a friends help - a friend who doesn't mind getting mucky!
What we learn is that the best system for clearing the caravan pipes is to get a think wired brush with a loop in one end. Tie string from the loop to a rag and pull through each pipe. It looks like the culprit has been grease and it's blocked half of all the grey water pipes.

A large kettle of boiling water every now and again will help those pipes run better. UK caravans historically have used small bore pipework. Some caravan DIYer's replace the longer lengths with slightly larger bore. This actually increases the flow rate dramatically.

I'm a drain layer, and have a bit of knowledge in plumbing too , I had those silly little waste traps in my caravan too , and had the same issues as you. I retro fitted a standard 25mm waste trap to kitchen sink , no problem with water draining now. Oh and upgraded to 25mm waste pipe too . It's a bit fiddly but doable. Hope that helps. Ps. Use a vented trap .

Dont let any food related scraps go down your caravan/Motorhome sink hole. The Smell trap can get blocked by doing this, also choose an Eco freindly detergent for washing the dishes etc.Pour hot water, not boiling, down the sink hole once or twise a week and use a small hand plunger to move the hot water back and forth so as to melt any soap fat.Never pour cooking oil or cooking fat down the sink. Also pour disinfectant down the sink often ,this will help keep the waste tank clean of any bugs and will help stop that grey water smell.

Hi Karen found your channel and have been catching up with your vids We have a 6 mtr self contained bus and use the same "system "for our waste as we used in our house with a septic system A kettle of boiling water to sterilse [sinks and toilet] and help clean fatty waste, White vinegar is also great for sterilising/cleaning. We also use bicarb and citrus juice [lemon, orange , whatever you have they are all natural degreasers/sterilizers, these are great for wiping down surfaces and sinks etc and also helps keep the pipes clear. Another tip is to put a small dish of bicarb in the fridge to absorb any smells including onion or fish. Using these natural items we found that for nearly 30 years we never needed to buy any commercial cleaners etc [except for a bit of oven cleaner for when we let it go to far] are still alive and were never required to pump out our septic tank, unlike our neighbors who normally did it between 2 and 5 years at best. The citrus always leaves a pleasant smell as well as [not gospel] I believe it helps with keeping insects away. anyhow enough rambling - it is brilliant to see your development as you have experienced and discovered/developed the skills necessary to live this life, long may it continue [and I will keep watching] PS: I am from Hawkes Bay and recently retired from my printing business, may even have done some of your work.

what Ive done in the past is jam a potato up the waste pipe where it exits the system and mix up a good stiff brew of caustic soda and water in the sink and then let it bubble through and sit for as long as you can .overnight is best. keep your fingers out of it as it burns. and of course dont stand over the sink as it burps through beccause you could get a splash in the eye.

when you level the caravan at each site, make sure the nose is slightly higher than the back, so nose high, and helps the drainage as pipes are not level but slope towards the waste tank.

Ah, but all my pipes are linked up for 'Self Containment' so that means some water ends up in my shower at the back of the caravan and the plug is at the front of the tray. Gets messy😝

Use old wine bottle corks. Put one in at one end, fill pipe with washing soda disolved in hot water, put cork into other end to trap liquid, leave for 12 hrs, remove corks and flush with a hosepipe. Also works on onboard waste pipes, just put a cork in the outlet socket and pour the soda mixture down sink. If cleaning Colapz pipes, fully extend them, hold in a U shape, fill with soda mix then push both ends together to seal and leave 12 hrs then flush with a hosepipe.

As someone else mentioned. After scraping any leftover food on plates etc into bin, I quickly wipeover with paper towel so remove excess food and grease before washing in hot soapy water. This should help remove excess build up of gunk in your pipes. However, as you found cleaning pipes didn't completely solve your drainage problem. I too sometimes have problems with slow draining kitchen sink so I would be very interested to know if you manage to find a good solution. Good luck.

Think of air venting, there simple isn't enough air venting for the kitchen sink to drain faster. There is a way to help, but will require substantial plumbing work done. A vent pipe with one way airflow valve can be fitted to your drain pipe, this will help suck more air into your draining system to speed up draining.

Lady you really do need to look after the pipes. You were correct in your assessment, the the lower ball is to collect light food, A FOOD TRAY. to stop the smell travelling up through the pipe is an S bend. This collects water by gravity, thus STOPPING smell back up into whichever area. Must admit those pipes were terrible, you naughty girl. In my personal view is the kitchen sink pipe has a serious blockage, the water even after cleaning still seemed very slow, which it should not as your waste pipes are solid pipes with a good flow diameter. I know it late in my view however I sincerely hope you have all sorted by now, either that or its time to do it all again. Rubber glow time. ( Ireland )

As usual I am months behind on commenting. = ( Anyway, here is my take on this. The shower drain was cleaner because there wasn't any fats going down the drain. When you drain the kitchen sinks make sure you are draining hot water at the same time so the fats don't harden up like they would in cold water. There is a reason they put a vent pipe in kitchen drains in a house and that is to help the water flow freely and not lock up. Since you don't have holding tanks I would so block the lines so the water and whatever you plan to soften the fats with stays in the line over night. I don't know how good it works but I heard pouring a cup of bleach in each drain once a month would keep the lines free of any fats. If you catch this before it becomes a big problem then there isn't a bid mess to clean up.

My God woman what do you flush trough there? Looks like frying fat. 😋That's how your arteries look when you smoke and eat junkfood for 20 years 😂

🤣I was worried it was the porridge I was eating, but apparently it is fat! Didn't think I used that much...

Fats and deturgents make a great gunk. Very hot water down each plug once a week will help.

Yes, I hadn't realised how bad it would get. A great tip.

Not a nice job The Happy travellers had that problem in their motor home and they used soda crystals it seemed to work for them 👍

Go to Bunnings or Mitre 10 and get a drain cleaning plunger, they work great, just use it monthly or when ever you see a slow down. www.bunnings.co.nz/kinetic-sink-drain-plunger-small_p04900037

I know I’m late to this video, the biggest problem will be right at the drain on the sink . That will be the biggest clog. Take the sink out to get to the drain pipe.
@TravellingK

That would speed up the cleaning process!!

Your pipes should sloap from drain to outlet.

Caustic soda is the way to go....mix up a jug full, close the outlet and fill the pipes. It may take a while to let all the air escape when filling, leave overnight and then a hot rinse through and they will be slick as....you can buy it at Bunnings.
