Thanks so much Richard! My Gold Series Water Conditioner was beeping and I got Error 1 with water draining. I called Culligan and they said with this error there is nothing they can do because they don’t make the parts anymore. They told me that I needed a new unit and they would be happy to come out and provide a quote. I was livid! So I searched RU-vid and found your video. I think I may have a slightly different model than yours as the wiring was a little different. I followed step by step and it is working like a dream.

Thanks, Richard, for the excellent video. It was very helpful in repairing our softener. I had an extra problem when pulling the main valve out. One of the "O" rings moved out into a port and caused the valve to jam about half way out. Your explanation of rebuilding the valve reminded me that the sections screw together. I was able to use a curved needle nose plier to grab the next section and unscrew it. I removed a section at a time until I got to the section that had the pinched "O" ring. After pushing the valve back in a little, I was able to pull the "O" ring out and remove the final sections. Watching your video was indispensable. Thanks again.

Earlier post (4 days ago). I received the Super Lube and proceeded to follow the video step by step. I just completed the second cycle (Regen) as instructed. Everything works good so far. I found that the cycles worked itself through very smoothly. This was a fantastic video with step by step instructions. I will hopefully update you all in the future to let everyone know if this will fix this issue long term. Thanks Richard. Great job.

Thank you a thousand times over! Your video was amazing! You gave me the info and confidence to fix this myself. Saved me the 120.00 service charge. I did have to buy the 100.00 kit so I just greased it all and put new parts in (I only needed the little screen but as you said they didn't sell parts separately).

Richard, you just fixed my Culligan. I have the an Estate 2 model with the same seal pack and brine valve as yours. My issue was very little brine refill water was coming into the brine tank when the regeneration cycle was complete. Therefore it was trying to soften 400 gallons daily with only 5 inches of water. I lubricated both the brine valve and the seal pack now the refill water is back to 12 inches. Thank you Richard.

This video is very detailed and well done. My water softener stopped working just outside of the warranty. I didn't want to spend a fortune to have someone come out. It also is frustrating to have to schedule the service and wait for them to show up when you should be at work. So, I watched this video and initially thought that looks complex. However, I am cheap and work full time. It is an expensive repair and they really only come out when I am suppose to be at work. So, I started the video and followed these instructions step by step. The issue with my softener was that the piston had seized inside the gaskets. I took it apart and applied the grease. It still moved really hard, but it moved. I reassembled the unit and watched it cycle ! It is actually pretty easy. (Notes: I put a eyeglass polishing cloth on the shaft before I pulled with the needle nose plyers to prevent scratching. Also, I used another tool to create a lever to get enough pulling force. I did actually create a small bend in the thin section of the shaft. I had to straighten this, but fortunately I did not break it. Be careful pulling.)

Thank you, Richard, for the very informative video. I've been searching for this kind of video since the day I bought my water softener in 2014. Just yesterday, I had the Error 1H on the equipment screen. I was planning to call Culligan to check it. I had the same problem before and I noticed that guy did not replace anything but just lubricated the gaskets. I couldn't follow what he did. And then finally, you save the day. I followed your instructions and really very helpful. No glitch. Thank you. Hope to see some more videos of some of the resolutions to the problems that you may have encountered with your Culligan water softener. Thank you again.

@@richardlloydusa all the best to you too! Just wanted to expand on my experience. After finding my error from watching your video, my softener still wasn't working, so I removed the seal pack again to inspect it, because everything I read said the seal pack was the problem. At the end of the seal pack there are 4 prongs. One was broken off of the old seal pack I removed, and the new one had one broken off as well, but input it in anyway. When I removed the new one, after it didnt work, I inspected it closely and noticed a piece had chipped off the very end by the prong that broke off. It was shaped like a crescent moon, and extended to where the O-ring was. I unscrewed the end part of the old seal pack and put it on the new seal pack along with the new O-ring. Put it all back together, and the darn thing worked!! Again, I wouldn't have known the seal pack consisted of several parts that all screwed together, had it not been for your video. So again, you da man!!! Forgot to mention that i found the small sliver that broke off inside the plastic bag that it came in. Must have gotten smashed pretty good somewhere.

Thank you very much for your video. I followed and did the exact steps and the Gold9 came back to life after the 1H Error and the pointer stuck at 3 o’clock put it to sleep. I broke the C ring at the end so ti HomeDepot I go. Just want to add that the problem with my Culligan was the plastic tube (the top of the 2 parts that were lubricated), with the edge sitting in the groove of the cap were OUTSIDE of the groove, which caused the pointer not moving. Thanks again for your very details instruction on how to fix the ERR 1H on the Gold9. Dead on.

It seems the main seal pack assembly (black parts, not white parts) is available now through part number 1013083 for anyone else in need. I got that after they didn't have 1016267 in stock and all I needed was the black plastic parts which broke on mine. FYI for others and maybe Richard can update the main post with this other part number as well. Thanks again!

Richard - THANK YOU for a great video, early last year i had the error 1H, i performed your teardown, the O-rings were looking okay, so all i did was re-lubed and reinstall, no issues for many months, until now. So i figure the O-rings have reached their end of life, so the hunt is on for new O-rings. For those companies that do not print in fractions, but in decimals, here are the O-ring sizes: 3/8 x 1/2 x 1/16 = = 0.375 x 0.5 x 0.0625 1/2 x 5/8 x 1/16 = = 0.5 x 0.625 x 0.0625 1/8 x 1/4 x 1/16 = = 0.125 x 0.25 x 0.0625 13/16 x 1-1/16 x 1/8 = = 0.8125 x 1.0625 x 0.125 Again thank you for a great presentation

Richard, Thank you...you just saved me over $400 from those crooks at Culligan. Excellent DIY video...Worked like a charm...trying to wrap my brain around how Culligan could have the audacity to charge $400 for labor on top of the $100 for the parts for what I was able to do with a screwdriver, some lubrication and about 45 mins of time...I truly feel for those folks, especially the elderly, who are preyed upon by industries like Culligan.

Thank you for this video. Very informative and easy to follow. When I removed the Seal Pack my o-rings were stretched and loose. I went to several hardware stores, but couldn't find 1 7/32" o-rings as mentioned in the video. I used 1 6/32" o-rings and the softner is working! When I went to put it back together my actuator was not in the home position. I figured out I could plug in the softner and when it rotated into the home position I unplugged the softner to stop the motor.

I think the assembly was brittle anyway due to my water. I went culligan and bought the entire assembly for $190 with tax. They were very helpful and reinforced everything you said. FYI - I have now had to fix an Err 1 *twice*! So let me add my 2 cents worth. Richard Lloyd’s advice is on the money. My first repair was about 1 year ago and I figured it would last 10 years. It did not. A few days ago I again heard non-stop water running with the dreaded Err 1 appearing on my softener. Looking inside, the damn thing was stuck again at the “3:00” position described by Mr. Lloyd. I again took it apart using Mr. Lloyd’s instructions and again the big black plunger / valve thing-a-ma-bob was stuck. I had to yank it out with channel locks. It was again gunky and the internal plunger was impossible to pull. I had to unscrew all the separate pieces to release this plunger, being careful not to lose the O-rings and washers. This time I essentially polished the plunger with 3800 grade car polish!! It was as shiny as glass! Now based on advice elsewhere the last time I fixed it I used Vaseline. It lasted one year - no exaggeration. It was gunky and the plunger did not move. This time I used Super Lube - and it seems much better. We shall see. If I am never back here again you will know Super Lube is the way to go!!

So I bought all new seals etc as you did... super lubed everything... everything works just like it should... BUT... I can still hear Water draining out the waste line not only as soon as I unbypass the water but also after a full hour regen. My water bill last month before I even knew what was going on was $400. So now I replaced everything and it STILL drains... ANY IDEAS where to go when you do everything in your video an it doesn't stop water from draining constantly out the drain line?

Great video. My seal pack is stuck in the 3 o’clock position and the motor will not move it at all. I have repaired and lubricated it in the past but was able get the seal pack in the home position then. Am I likely to destroy anything other than the seal pack from just pulling harder. I applied some leverage to the seal pack and still could get only a little movement.

Not sure at this point what option do you have but to pull it? Usually it's an O ring that broke that causes it to jam. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Ok so my water softener did this and I fixed it using your video. Thank you very much. This was back in August. Here it is in January and the problem came back. In your experience does it come back often? I don't want to have to call culligan and pay for them to come out and then pay for them to fix it. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 7 лет назад
I have not had a recurrence but I suspect in your case you may have some poor or worn out components check the O-Rings and see if they are damaged, if they are replace them and if that does not fix it you can buy a new replacement from Culligan and replace it yourself, not cheap but cheaper then having them do it. They will sell you a replacement kit if you ask them for it. Thanks and all the best.

Hey Richard. I followed the steps in the video and it worked great. The only problem is now I seem to have developed a slow leak somewhere and it's pooling at the bottom of my resin tank. Its not coming from the brine tank. It seems to be coming from somewhere behind the culligan cover that's around the resin tank. Any thoughts?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 6 лет назад
I had a similar leak (after bumping into it with car LOL) I was the bottom seal on the assembly where it connects to the resin tank. Bypass the system like I show in the video undo the collar and look at the seal. I just had to re-seat the seal and that fixed it. If it's not that you will have to do some detective work to locate the leak. Thanks.

You can unplug it and turn the bypass valve so no water flows through it. You can see how to do this at the 4:15 point in the video. Make sure you turn it back on when you are done or you system will not be able to soften the water for you home. Thanks.

Great Video! I had 1H and it was stoping at the 3 oclock position. I was able to follow video all the way through, turned it on and it started cycling just like yours at the end. So, I figured i would let it finish off the regen and I would run it through another cycle in the morning since it was late. I went out this morning and it was still cycling. I unplugged it and the water kept cycling so I turned off the valve and scratching my head now. Any advice?

I had to stop when I was removing the larger seal with several O rings because the metal portion I was pulling on to remove it extended forwards towards myself and I do not know what that means? Should it slide out or before that how many times you turn it or counterclockwise before you pull it out( you mention in your video friction) ? Thanks C

Very helpful. Does anyone have a part number for the inner seals? They're about 1" outer diameter maybe 0.62" inner and 0.15" thick. I think that these get stiff with age which contributes to the valve binding up.

I think mine are done too... you are referring to the white thick seals that fit in between those 9 pieces that unscrew... NOT the large black O rings the thcker white seals... did you ever find out your answer? I'm expecting to be really ripped off by culligan parts.

Excellen video and instruction, great job! Unfortunately, when I tried to take out the lower plunger assembly, it broke on me. I bought a new kit ($115) and installed it. This resolved the initial problem of it getting stuck but now it still won't produce soft water. I think that pieces of o-rings or plastic got stuck inside the valve. Any idea on how to disassemble the valve?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 8 лет назад
Can you manually cycle the unit and see if it completes a cycle without failure? Also check that your salt has not hardened or formed a bridge. Thanks
@francesorozco478
@francesorozco478 8 лет назад
Yes it completes the cycle without failure. I watched your video replacing the seal pack assembly and tested it and it finished completely without any problems or errors. I also cleaned out the brine tank and removed all the hardened salt. When I run a manual regen cycle, it completes without any problems but the water is still hard. I also changed out the media in the tank thinking it was bad. What I'm asking is if you know how to rebuild the valve completely (if it's even possible) not just the seal pack assembly and the other piston that you mentioned in your video. I don't understand why it would go through a complete cycle, use up my salt and still not soften the water. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 8 лет назад
I am sure that you can disassemble the valve completely but I would adjust your hardness setting in the configuration settings first. Of course they will be different as water hardness changes from location to location. You can can check it by using the program button. My hardness setting is at 30 i believe the higher the number the higher the hardness. Also make sure your bypass valve is open 4:18 in the video. I turn mine 9 turns from fully closed. Clockwise to close then turn counter clockwise 9 full turns. Please tell me if any of this helped. Thanks.

I replaced the seal pack with a new one without adding more silicone grease. The regen mode operates for five minutes but then stops and triggers the repair phone icon. Would replenishing the silicone grease solve this problem? Also, the water in the drain hose moves vigorously in the service mode with the circuit board power removed? Is this normal?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 3 года назад
I find that the problem with this system is not just lubrication but also the O-Rings and the plastic housing. Look for damage in both. If the unit does not go through a whole cycle you may have a broken part. But if it's working there is no need to fix it. Check this forum out: www.doityourself.com/forum/water-softeners-air-filtration-systems/527699-culligan-water-softner-brine-draw-issue-resolved.html and understand you may have to buy the rebuild kit but at least you can do the job yourself and save yourself $$$$ Thank you for watching and commenting. Hello Richard, I am trying to repair my Culligan Gold Series 9. When I tried to bypass the water softner, I discover the bypass value is not functioning. I obtained the correct replacement part from Culligan and shut off the water to the house. The trouble is the old plunger is stuck in place. How do I remove it?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 6 лет назад
More than likely one of the O-rings is jamming it. I suggest using a puller if you have one or a pair of vise grips. Try not to mar the surface of the stainless steel shaft as it will then need to be replaced as it will no longer be water tight. You may have to change the plunger assembly if it get's damaged in any way. The O-rings can be replaced though. Thanks.

I suggest not turning the pack with pliers before removing it. Mine snapped at the treads immediately, so it's $250 for a new pack. If it doesn't come out with pulling alone, there is an easily removed cover at the back you can remove and push the pack out. Careful here too as the pack has those 4 legs at the back that are also easily broken.
@oddcopter4113
@oddcopter4113 6 лет назад
This is the best tip on here! Pulling the bottom plunger is not the best method if it is stuck at all. Removing the back cover is simple and then it is easy to tap through with a small wooden dowel being careful not to tap on the 4 legs! Thanks! you saved me $250. Sorry you discovered it late, but thanks so much for the tip.

More than likely the valve is jamming and causing the error. I would have a look at it and see what state it's in. The main issue with these units seems to be this valve assembly. Thanks.

Re: 19:21 lower plunger warning. Also, attempting to rotate a very stuck plunger clockwise will crack the first (or outer) plastic cover at the threads. The shaft comes out but leaves the remaining parts of the plunger in the body. Crap.

Thanks for the detailed video! I did not have an error code, but my Gold Series 9 was constantly draining slowly. The cam was in the home position and not stuck, so I figured it must be bad seals or o-rings leaking. I chose to buy the Culligan seal kit and got it locally since for some reason they gave me a good price with a big discount. I swapped the seal assemblies with the new ones and all is good now! It looks like some of the inner seals that the piston slides through were bad, the outer o-rings looked fine. For another choice of lube, here is what I used. It's Super Lube 56204 specifically for o-rings (silicone; food grade; etc). www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C3CZ9CL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Never mind. I went to my local culligans today and they just referred to it as the "Seal kit". I was pleasantly surprised that it was only $50 (also came with the white plunger parts above it too)!!!! I can't imagine what I would have been charged to have someone else replace it all. Also my original seal kit had broken off inside piece by peace. Seems like a bunch of my "O" rings had worn out and broken and were causing it to not slide out very easily and were getting stuck when i tried to pull it all out. Then I noticed I could remove a few pins off of the back and take off the back cover to the seal kit area. At that point I was able to just use a screwdriver handle and a mallet and gently tap it forward with out scratching up the inside of the housing. All in all i was able to familiarize myself more with my equipment which will hopefully save me more trouble & money down the line. My initial O rings lasted over 3 years and I guess started to fail (our well water is pretty hard here in North East, PA.) Anyway this video is great and thank you for posting it. I appreciate the thoroughness especially when you're dealing with a several thousand dollar piece of equipment.

DO NOT USE Super Lube Synthetic Grease! It will cause the o-rings and rubber grommets to swell, causing a worse problem than the original problem. The o-rings swelled so much that I ended up breaking the seal-pack while attempting to remove it. Even on the video, I could see that one of the o-rings had already started to swell. The Culligan User Manual specifically says to use a Silicon Grease because the petroleum based grease will cause problems with the o-rings. I found out the hard way that the Synthetic grease causes the same problem. I talked to a Culligan repairman that informed me that a DOW 111 silicon grease should be used.

Why hasn't Culligan ever published simple videos like this! I called to get my gold system services from the same dealer that installed - they made me pay for the service call first, then scheduled it 7 weeks later !? Worse, they didn't even make the appoint, after waiting all that time. Yes, it's my local dealer's fault, but knowing this now, I'd rather replace my Culligan system with Kenmore or Whirlpool system, which come with full service manuals and on-line DIY guides ! Sh
