As more people visit Mount Everest, trash is being left behind in Sagarmatha National Park and hard to manage. What are your thoughts on this issue?

I saw a statement since the climbers can pay over $100 thousand the climber thinks nothing of forfeiting $5 thousand for the trash fee. Before you are allowed to summit, a trash requirement should be mandatory to pick up a certain amount of trash or a refusal to allow climbers to further summit should be enforced.

Don't know if it's any comfort, but tourism on more accessible mountains across China for example left these littered with trash by consumers from across the wealth range even back in 2000. I unwittingly contributed with a coke bottle myself on Mt Emei as a macaque came up and stole it from my belt with impressive speed and ease. But with modern era wealth, and as adventure tourism becomes industrialized, it's increasingly a numbers game. And great wealth in combination with great ignorance or indifference means the most potential for pollution per visitor of course. Arrogant new-rich posers etc play an unmistakable part but litter and plastic is a systemic problem. It also reflects the value system of the contemporary culture of the littering person, earnings aside.

Its takes two months to climb Everest. Up to higher camps to acclimate and back to lower. Every climber should have to bring down 10 lbs of trash during acclimation climbs. They are going up for a day to acclimate then returning to a lower altitude returning to the lower camp. Usually three times at each stage. When the next lower camp climbers arrive in a higher camp to acclimate bring it back with them. rinse and repeat through all the higher camps until it works it way down the mountain. It would be cleaned up in one season. There ought to be some market for Everest trash souvenirs. Those villagers will sell about anything to tourists.

Subtitles: Voice of Ang Dorjee Sherpa (as is written on screen) Starts at 1:14 “50 years ago, Namche was not like it is now. In those days, we had Sherpa traditional houses with small windows, doors, and roofs made out of wood. In 1990, the number of tourists started increasing from around 8,000 to 10,000 tourists per year. Likewise, the amount of waste was also increased. We didn’t have any waste management then, so most places became littered. At that time Tyangboche Rinpoche and all local people thought that we had to take initiative to manage the waste, (and) that was how SPCC was born.” Stops at 2:20 Starts again at 3:06 “Starting this spring we decided to involve tourists in the conservation and waste management of this area. We are requesting each individual tourist take one kilogram of waste with them from Khumbu back to Kathmandu. Of the 50,000 visitors, if only 50% of them take the waste from Khumbu to Kathmandu, then 25,000 kilograms of waste will be taken back to Kathmandu. We are hoping for that.” Stops at 3:43 Starts again at 3:55 “I think Khumbu is a lot cleaner than in the past. But in the next 10 years, we would like to create a proper waste management system, with recycling, upcycling and minimizing waste at the source, which has been a big challenge in the last 10 years. For now, the mountains are still littered and we are still doing clean-up campaigns.” Video ends :)
