Had the same model back when I was a kid. I modded it with the LED's of the time so the case lit up. Used a Potentiometer to control Brightness & sensitivity gain as it was hooked into a 3 way switch with a LM386 Audio Chip which I fed signal via the speaker outputs of the radio That way the Led's would Dance with the music if wanted.

Nothing anyone bought to impress their friends with sound...but...I’m sure for a first radio, and being transparent, there were many happy kids with this. I recall going to KMart back in the day, chuckling as I walked by this type of hardware. But now there is something nostalgic about it that resurfaces such memories from classic times. Thank you for this video!

GPX was underrated. I had a portable cd player back in the late 90s and it was my favorite in terms of sound quality. The headphones it came with sounded great too. I used it everywhere.. took it on planes, to school, car rides you name it.

Big D, you need to mod it and add a couple of the micro subwoofers to it, lol (I bought 4 of them after your video on them, they seem much smaller in-person but are made really well for the size/prize and fit perfectly in a GM 3/4" factory tweeter podT). To take from your WCA channel for the clear boombox, "Do it bump doe?" ...and the answer is no but it still works without cleaning or refurbishment. Really cool retro find, enjoyed it!

lol, I owned that exact boom box! Only mine was in red. I was maybe 8ish and I was in my taking things apart faze. I like to see how things worked from the inside, and unfortunately, it was a victim. Sometimes I got it working again, but this died in the process. I ripped the wires and I couldn’t fix em. A clear one would have saved me from taking it apart!

OMG I got that same boombox for my birthday when I was like 6 or 7 - it was yellow and unfortunately both of them had issues where they got returned by my parents. They got it from ToysRUs. It would have been 1996 or 1997

I had this big black boom box back in the day.dual cassette etc it had a pair of 6" wooders or maybe 8's.. its funny i bought it at a wholesale joint but i swear i have seen that exact model in so many movies. Wish i could remember the make/model.. emerson pops up in my head..

@@danielknepper6884 that one was close to another one i had . Closest one i found was a Lasonic i931 bt.. if that helps..but mine had white or silverish woofers and duel cassette..maybe a 5 band eq.. i may be wrong too about it being an Emerson.. been a day or 2 since then..lol

My first boom box was a mid 80's blue and gray GE with the vertical mount cd player and cassette. Just like the cassette in this. You breathe wrong a cd would skip and it had a 3 band eq with independent LR volume controls.

I would love to see you modify/upgrade stuff like this that isn't inherently valuable. Obviously if it was a pristine, new-in-box example, I wouldn't suggest it, but this one has seen normal use and could use a refresh.

Personally if it were me I'd just upgrade all the audio caps with far higher quality versions you'd never see in a budget radio like this. The design is fun and simple so I think just some better quality components would help it out a good deal. :)

Not bad, compared on todays cheap boombox with the same features. But with fake stereo speakers, tape is mono and sounds the tinny and fake analog tuner that only pick up a couple of stations.

It requires a complex setup of batteries wired in series and there is no equipment capable of testing it (within reason)

@wal2 sure would be cool to see. at $0.005 per watt , i bet ALL bass heads would be interested in seeing that . I know there's the 25 12v battery's to consider, but 160k ???
