Cleoma Breaux Falcon - Hand Me Down My Walking Cane 1937. Recorded on Sunday the 21st. of February 1937 in Dallas. Cleoma Vocals Guitar, Fiddle Joe Falcon / Moise Morgan. Decca 17059.
This song was composed and recorded in 1923-1926 by an African American blind woman Juanita Arizona Dranes entitled "All My Sins Are Taken Away". I guess Joe Falcon /Moise Morgan just changed the verses and made it theirs. Go figure.
It's a twist on a gospel classic for drunkards and sinners. "I'm Going Home On The Morning Train" has been recorded by gospel artists continuously to this day
Hand me down my walking cane Hand me down my walking cane Hand me down my walking cane I'm gonna catch that midnight train All my sins are taken away, taken away Hand me down my bottle of corn Hand me down my bottle of corn Hand me down my bottle of corn I'm gonna get drunk sure as you're born All my sins are taken away, taken away I got drunk, got put in jail I got drunk, got put in jail I got drunk, got put in jail And now nobody to go my bail All my sins are taken away, taken away Bean was tough, and the meat was fat The bean was tough, and the meat was fat The bean was tough, and the meat was fat Oh my Lord, I couldn't eat that All my sins are taken away, taken away If I die in this old jail If I die in this old jail If I die in this old jail Send my body by C.O.D. All my sins are taken away, taken away If I'd a-listened to what mother said If I'd a-listened to what mother said If I'd a-listened to what mother said I'd be home All my sins are taken away, taken away I can't sing, dance or play. So this is the best I could do to show my appreciation for the wonderful artist from the past. Enjoy
@@OidSoldier As you might have guessed, Cleoma changed some lyrics. I don't know exactly why. "Send my body by U.S. mail" may have run afoul of Post Office regulations. "I'd be home safe in bed" seems harmless. Thanks for upvoting a dusty old 4-year old post. Cheers!
Never heard of her. I enjoy Cajun music, but I don't usually keep it in my collection because I can't understand the majority of the French lyrics. It's nice having English for a change.
This is the only version of this song I have ever cared for. But for the longest time, I thought the lyric was "All my sons are taken away". I learned recently that it was "All my sins are taken away". Lack the same punch, I think. Still a wonderful tune, absolutely wonderful, but I can't help but here "All my sons are taken away".
