I am Egyptian, A COPTIC CHRISTIAN EGYPTIAN, I shout that out loud because we are the most pure blooded Egyptians out there and that's not only my opinion that's what Egyptologists, Historians and Scientists also agreed on , and I tell you that every word that Bassem Youssef said is right and I totally agree with him. Yes Egypt had lots of mixed cultures throughout its history like for example: Greeks, Romans and Arabs, but the Egyptian blood didn't mix and change that much and that's because for centuries we Egyptians had a golden tradition rule to marry our cousins, and that tradition is still present until now especially in Upper Egypt(from Assiut to Aswan), Although that tradition seems silly and bad from a scientific biological point of view, but that doesn't matter, silly or not we kept that tradition of marrying our cousins for centuries and that helped us to preserve our pure Egyptian blood not mixed as long as we could, and the result is what you see now and that is Modern Egyptians looks typical to their Ancient Egyptian Ancestors, just look at my skin color and Bassem Youssef's skin color we are almost the same although he is a Muslim who was born and lived in Cairo and I am a Coptic Christian who was born and lived in Luxor and there is almost a 1000 km distance between us, doesn't that tell you a thing or two about who Ancient Egyptians were and what they looked like? With all due respect for all the Black people and all the other ethnicities out there, but we Egyptians are special very special, WE ARE NOT Black or White or Yellow, Not Europeans or Africans or Asians, Not Assyrians or Persians or Israelites or Nubians or Greeks or Romans or Arabs or French or Italians or Germans or British or Turkish or Ukrainians, Not Middle Easterners or Caucasians or Mediterraneans or Levants or Amazigh or Berbers or even North Africans. WE ARE EGYPTIANS, WE ARE VERY UNIQUE!

Any Doctor will tell you that consistently marrying cousins causes birth deformities & other issues. Marfan Syndrome ran in the Egyptian royal line as a result of cousins marrying & other closer relatives marrying too. Sibling marriage was common in Egyptian royals too. . Also, look at old portraits of the Hapsburg dynasty. Deformities were very obvious ( Hapsburg chin) .

There were so many great actors on the film, so much planning went into it, in every aspect of it - great actors did bit parts - sets were magnificent - even marble floors in the studio sets, Hume Cronin, for instance, did weeks or months of study in preparation. I was the Persian Princess with the 11 others, mostly slave girls with bare costumes in Cleo's court. Day after day, month after month, she NEVER SPOKE TO ONE OF US.. I and 2 others were kept on month longer than others, walking off the set one day, Burton whirled around and enthusiastically just said "HI ANN!" "LIZ" turned and glared at me -- two days later, I got my notice, no longer needed!! Yes, she did get me fired.. I had nothing to do with Burton nor wanted to as I was dating a "Richard" asst. director!!

I had made previous comment but maybe removed, not seeing it now. I worked at the Prussian Princess in Cleopatra's court of 5 princesses and 7 slave girls. I had the fortunate 6 months of working with INTELLIGENT, TALENTED actors -- men that is. European girls were rude and very inconsiderate - I wasn't accustomed to their actions, but of course EVERY man was professional. Someone asked why they had British accents, originally it was to be done in England, as usual "Liz" got sick, it was delayed, Burton later entered -- and "won her heart" even her health, as it improved once she was determined go "get" him!! Eddie was on the set in earlier days tending her pet dog. A large % of actors WERE from England! There was a company of I don't remember how many, I did know a lot of buddies that shot darts, had little parties, went skiing on a weekend. They might be a guard one day, totally different character the next, filled in where needed. Thrilling to be on it, later really bored. One she got her claws on Burton, seems later editing of major parts of the movie hit the edit room floor! I have nothing good to say about "Liz" her final blow, not just NOT speaking to any of us women the whole time were there - walking off the set one day, Burton whirled around and said "HI, ANN!" then SHE whirled around, glared at me --- 2 day later, I was told I was no longer needed.. and YES, on checking when most were back in CA - she did have me fired. So dump, too!! I admired Burton as an actor's talent, nothing more!!!

They began filming CLEOPATRA in England so they had a ready pool of "local talent". English language films about ancient empires: Rome, Greece, Egypt, etc. always seem to be populated by British actors. They seem to have secured the "franchise". Go figure...
@europeanamerican7658
@europeanamerican7658 5 лет назад
As of course the Romans and Greeks cannot be portrayed in their original languages as they are extremely difficult to master for speakers of English, there is sometimes a convention that Romans have an upper class, ostentatious, formal accent like British and Jews, Arabs and non Romans and non Greeks played by American actors. This is not always the case of course. As a Greek, it would be difficult to create witty dialogue, hyperbolic pompous statements and eroticism in ancient hellenic attic dialect or Koine and probably the same holds for Latin . Those speaking forms were useful and are useful for those who have mastered them since children. You have to try hard to be functional in ancient languages and alas all their native speakers are now skeletons under the earth.

This film was so misconceived from the start. Mankiewicz turned an epic tragedy into a Beverly Hills family squabble. And on top of the small scenes he could not handle--I mean Cleopatra being manhandled by guards?--he could not come close to executing the large scale scenes either. I think it was Taylor who wanted him. Which shows you how little she knew about directing and spectacle. I really think that when they dumped Collins and signed Taylor to that ridiculous contract, that was the beginning of the end. If you want to see a real performance of Cleopatra that captures the grandeur and tragedy of the woman, see Janet Suzman in the RSC production which is also online.
