Beau is an Australian Cattle Dog that is well on his way to becoming a very good boy!
I watched the first several of this playlist and it taught me how to train using marker words.
• Basic Obedience Traini...
This woman made me think having a heeler with children is possible! She was right. You just have to be the type of person that doesn’t take “no” for an answer. You must have grit!
• Australian cattle dogs...
• Tips for having good A...
This made me realize I wanted a trained heeler
• Well trained vs untrai...
This made me realize that some things have to be immediately stopped for safety reasons. Controversial but it’s the only thing that worked for biting. Only had to do it a couple of times, and if you read the comments you will see other testimonies. LANGUAGE WARNING if you have young children.

My favorite "wilful beast," the Heeler! My pup was smart when he was little, then turned 6 mos or so and was a royal terror. Come to Ng out the other side at 3-YO now and I think he's finally settling in to his "good-dog" phase. They are definitely a real roller-coaster as they grow into young adulthood

I followed more of a balance training method because I needed a well trained dog for my young children. They are some strong willed pups for sure but balanced training has been amazing for us! I think it’s what’s kept us out of that rebellious phase I hear heelers go through. Beau is a bit over a year now, and today marks a year since we got him 🤗 Glad to hear yours is settling down 😄

I have two half heeler/shepherds and I don't think I can own another breed. It's like a cross between owning a cat and a dog and a wild animal. Velcro attached to people, biddable yet stubborn, independant, primitive and just full of joie de vivre. The second time around is just funny, watching the "emo roller-coaster". For instance, this week my 10 week old decided the back yard is Lava. So today we learned to walk on a leash. I knew there would be challenges with the new pup, but now that I'm more experienced with dogs, I'm surprised just how early he presents challenges and how important socialization is; weekly obedience classes just don't cut it.

Heh, we have a running joke about all the animals my heeler is clearly made up of that aren't dogs. She wriggles like a snake, plays like a cat, slinks like a dingo, has a tongue like a giraffe, has a kind of ratty face and her spots and shape put one in mind of a hyena. Her howl is like something between a wolf and a fox and it is often a howl more than a bark. Or if she's being quiet it's like an angry pigeon. Weird little alien beast.

Are blue heelers able to adapt to family life? People I talked to stay there too rambunctious. I have a house and a backyard a good one. Is it possible to calm them down? And can they be trained not to tear up stuff in the house?
@RallyGal94
@RallyGal94 2 года назад
If you have kids, they'll eat up a young heeler's energy. They are smart and extreamly athletic. So long as you provide them their daily active needs they will leave you and your house be. Fetch is a great way to quickly wear out a heeler. If you adopt a heeler that is older, say over 5, and had not been socialized a lot and used to few people, then no. Heelers are the only domesticated wild dog, so the only real issue you have to think about is knowing the scope of territorial agression. My heeler was almost killed by an escaped fighting dog in my front yard, so now she wants to murder other dogs but will cuddle with cats. I used to train wolves and work with abused dogs. Worry less about your house being damaged, and more about how socially opinionated the heeler is. Get one as a puppy, and you can train the dog to do anything.
@annetteysquierdo
@annetteysquierdo 2 года назад
If you have time to train them, meaning you train yourself to train them (I couldn’t afford a trainer so I watched RU-vid training vids) or hire a trainer and implement training from the get-go, then yes, they are great with kids. If you cannot afford a trainer and don’t have the time to put into training, don’t get a heeler. It takes effort, but my heeler doesn’t bite or rough house with my 2 children. When he came to me at 6 weeks old, he went after my then 5 year old daughter and made her cry. She “yelped,” and he dug in harder. He went from that to running with her and not after her. He’s a perfect dog in so many ways. Heelers are VERY intelligent! They learn FAST! You just have to have the time and effort to teach them and stay consistent. He will test boundaries from time to time, but I just remind him in a stern tone and he won’t test in that area for a long time. He doesn’t tear ANYTHING up that isn’t his. That boundary was set when he came into my house. He also doesn’t enter rooms, that boundary was set when he came home. He doesn’t get on couches. I think you get the point. Training starts the moment they come into your house because habits are made fast. That’s long and I could go on and on. I will be posting video links in the description to the RU-vid playlists and vids that helped me learn!

@annetteysquierdo
@annetteysquierdo 2 года назад
@@haroldream3270 Wonderful and thank you for your service! You may want to join some Facebook groups to see other heeler owner’s experiences. I have seen all sorts of heelers on the group pages. I’ve seen them good with cats but I’m sure just like anything else you’d have to expose them as much as possible when he/she first gets to you or they may not be. That goes for people, or anything you want them to be ok with. I’ve seen plenty of traveling heelers too. They are very loyal and I’ve heard good things about them being a companion on the road. I’m sure you can ask and see what others say about it though! Just a warning, a lot of people in heeler Facebook groups will laugh off bad heeler behavior and say “they were born to herd cattle, what do you expect?” Ignore them. Any dog can be trained. They just don’t have the time to do it or bought the lie that instinct is a life sentence and heelers can’t be raised with good manners. An example: they say nipping children is to be expected- I trained my heeler not to herd my children by 3-4 months old (I have a video here showing that) and others have done it also (link in my description). Don’t let those people convince you any different!

Recommended by my trainer, she runs off leash and comes when called, no longer chases cars, stops chasing deer when called and still crawls onto my lap for cuddles. I love this and all these videos, but please don't get me wrong but the thing that all these videos have in common that one can't stand is that they don't show how they trained them, They SHOW Only after the pup has been trained and what the puppy can do. It would be more understanding to see them showing us how did you show them, besides the treats of course that works but by ex: do you tell them andd guide them with the treats or give them the treats after, or do you just tell them (not being sarcastic) this is the kennel and you stay there until i say so because i know some puppies came be stubborn which is why I ask, it would be nice to show how its done during the process not once they got it down already if you know what i mean. I hope this doesn't come off in a bad way because I dont mean it at all in a bad way, just a way I want to understand and be taught. But besides that the video is beautiful and very well done training, big props to the owner 😊

Training like a dumb animal? I’m curious, what does that mean exactly? What is ignorant about training a dog? Is it that he uses his brain to think and exert energy for a tasty treat? Is it that he enthusiastically obeys and is happy to follow a command? Does he look scared to enter his crate as if he hates it?
