Most lathe spiral jigs move the router along rails parallel to the axis of the lathe. When I first thought about making this ornament, I intended to do something similar but angle the jig so it would make a straight taper. Then I realized I could greatly simplify things if instead of having to move the router carriage in a line I just had it pivot on an axis. This axis could be shared with a large gear, essentially having the router just sit on top of the gear. That gear gets driven by a smaller gear at a right angle, which makes the axis of that gear parallel to the axis of the lathe. Then all I need is another pair of gears, one of which replaces the lathe's hand wheel. The larger gear of this set is removed to decouple the pivot of the router from the lathe for the main shaping portion of making the ornament. The downside to this simplicity is that the jig is only capable of doing this one thing.
