I keep getting asked questions about living in a small home as a family of four. No, our house certainly isn't a "tiny home" but it's on the smaller side to some considering we have two small kids and both work from home full time. But I really do love living in a smaller space. The smaller home makes me more mindful of my things and offers lots of money saving benefits. But, lack of space can be hard so I'm sharing my BEST tips for living in a "small" home.

There’s a classic George Carlin routine where he talks about buying a house, getting stuff, needing a bigger house to fit the stuff, then getting more stuff, needing a bigger house, you get the picture! It predates me by decades but ever since I saw it, it’s stuck with me. As my own kids get bigger (and their clothes and toys get bigger - not more numerous, just physically larger), a bigger house is more and more tempting. But I agree that it’s more to pay for, clean, repair, insure, heat… ugh.

We live in a 700 square foot house and we are a family of 5! 3 kids ages 15,14(he is 6’1 already 😭) and 7. We do just fine in a small home, I just have to make sure I declutter often and only keep what we use/need. Which I love being minimal anyway! And we spend a lot of time together in this house which is what I love!❤️

We bought a 930sq ft house in the Midwest when our boys were little. They’re both grown and out of the house now. I’m glad they grew up in a small house and shared a room. The big joke in our families is that we don’t have to downsize like many of our friends who had giant homes after the kids move out.

My neighbor is in her 70s and her home is gorgeous! The yard is meticulous. It's at least 4,000 sq ft. She told me after living in all her houses over her life she would rather live minimally, and that's the way I am.

I feel this with my whole heart. I grew up with 12 people at home (I have 7 siblings) in a THREE BEDROOM home. Luckily we were able to make rooms out of the attic, basement, “dinning room”, etc. but it did not help there was ONE bathroom. One. No half bath. One toilet and shower to share between 12 people. We did it for 12 years 😂

That’s not small, that’s tiny! A Tiny Home! Honestly, if I could I’d build a “Tiny Home” I’d do it in a heartbeat 😃 I see these Barn type Sheds that have been turned into “Tiny Homes” and I love them. I’m 58, Divorced and live alone. So it would work well for me. Tho here in FL, the humidity & bugs make any outdoor living impossible. I’d bet your home is lovely, warm& inviting and filled with love ❤️ My 10 yr old Granddaughter lives the school year with her Dad and toddler Sister in a 48’ Gooseneck RV! It sits on his Parents 5 acres. He was having to work 3 jobs to afford Apts or they’d share 1 room (including his now ex-wife) in his parents house. It was just too much, so He got this. The girls love their tiny home! Best of all is Daddy works 1 job. He redid the bunk area into the cutest bedroom that the girls share.

Two adults here in under 350 sq ft for the past 6 years. Fortunately/unfortunately I went (not completely, but legally) blind, so "a home for the stuff you need" was a must-do... not an option. I keep my cooking tools (ladles, spatulas, strainers, measuring spoons/cups hanging on hooks attached to a strong metal grid on the wall behind my sink and the small stuff hanging from the top edge of a baker's rack. which also has a strong metal grid for hanging lesser-used tools. I know exactly where to reach to find and put back exactly what I need to cook , bake and do my canning. Before my major vision loss, I used to have turmoil trying to find the right pot or pan or utensil in a whole bunch of drawers and cabinets that were essentially small and large junk drawers. I'd go nuts if there wasn't a yard, and an attic, though.
@JoRake1
@JoRake1 2 года назад
Don't forget that STRONG magnets with hook can hold a metal cup hook rack onto your fridge (if its not chrome/stainless) and give you room to hang more. Your kitchen may look a bit like a restaurant kitchen - a bit industrial with everything needed within reach and no need to walk around with sharp knives and hot pans looking for something... but it works for me.

Confession: I’m in the UK and we have a very different idea of “small house” to you guys in the US, so I assumed this was going to be about your 2000sqft “small” house. It was so refreshing to see your modestly sized home- and how spacious you have still made it feel! We now live in our “forever home” which is a 5 bed, pretty large house. I say “large” because it is quite big (not enormous) by UK standards. It’s still only 1800sqft!! So I got lots of useful tips from this video :)

Family of four (two adults, one seven year old and one newborn) in a 600 sqf/55 sqm apartment here… but we ARE a bit cramped, no doubt about that. Looking forward to moving to a 750-850 sqf/70-80 sqm apartment soon. It works at the moment though, because we’re pretty minimalist and are extremely mindful about how much stuff comes through our door. Kallie’s tips ARE indeed useful for a small space, I’d even say a lot of them are absolutely essential for us the be able to live like this!

Yes!! As an organizer, mom to 4 almost 5---the first thing I ALWAYS encourage other moms when it comes to keeping a tidy home is starting by tackling surfaces---clearing surfaces is CRUCIAL!! The more we see clear surfaces, the easier it becomes to keep it that way and maintain them. The more clutter we see, the more we get used to seeing it and don't often realize why we are so overwhelmed--when in reality, that clutter fogs ours minds!

Excellent tips! I truly hate that with social media we are expected to get and keep our homes "Pinterest perfect". No one should feel the need to apologize or explain away toys in a home with children. I'm a minimalist and keep a very neat and clean home, but I try hard not to judge others because life happens. So what if there's a sink full of dishes. As long as the people in the home are healthy and happy, it;'s alllll good. Love your channel. Stay healthy!

I loved what you said “more stuff calls for more stuff!” Very very true! I have also learned to let things go! My daughter just turned one and she is my last baby. I had to let things go and stop keeping things bc of silly sentimental reasons. A lot of my clutter was bc I was sad to let them go or I didn’t want to hurt the person that gifted me an item. Even if I didn’t need it or have us for it. By letting things go, it freed up space in my home and created less things to clean.

When I first moved to the states I couldn't believe the size of the houses and garages, which mostly seemed to store tones of boxes not cars. The house I bought for my family of four was 2100 sq ft, which seemed huge to us. However within a few years we had also filled half our garage with boxes and filled the house up. I learned that the more space you have the more you buy. Now my kids are adults and I live alone I love my small one bed flat (about 400 sq ft) It's so easy to look after and fits everything I need in it. It stops me buying extra things that I want and I just stick to what I need so I have a comfortable, tidy home and a good savings account. In my house I spent every penny I earned buying things for my house so could never save, so glad I no longer live that way.

Love this video. We bought what we could afford, which was a small, 1945 home. We have 3 girls who are teens/almost teens, and it’s (phew) tight!! It has been HARD to create a home that feels comfortable that we can also homeschool and work at home from. It has required a lot of moving things around, flipping and upgrading furniture off Facebook until we found the right pieces (and then investing in more quality pieces that are similar to what works.) It has been 4 years and it’s still not 100% there, but we’ve come SO far, and it feels like “home” and makes sense for us.” Living in a small home has helped us all be more mindful and creative, and most of all… grateful! These are such excellent things to be instilling in the character of our children. I am thankful for our small home! ❤️

When we built our retirement home, I eliminated “unnecessary” closets. The contractor questioned my decision until I told him closets end up storing a lot of “unnecessary” STUFF! He thought on that and concluded they do store STUFF that we don’t ever use! Our floor plan had 5 closets; I kept 2. The elimination of the other 3 added more floor space to each room. One eliminated closet created space for a built in desk/office area. When I get this notion to store something, I remind myself why I eliminated closets. Oh, and I refuse to store anything in my attic! It is completely empty.

Yes! 100%! So many good reminders in this video. Also, your house feels so relatable to me. Our space is smaller, but we do a lot of the same things (home office/bedroom, rugs, etc.). That creative use of space tip is so important! When my daughter was an infant we used the top of the washing machine as the changing table😆. But the tough part is how small spaces force you to constantly reevaluate and edit, especially with growing kids. Just because something worked last month doesn't mean it will work forever. Now that the baby is a toddler we need that top of the washer space to store recycling out of reach!

Thank you for the video. Hi, Kallie. A few years ago, I started the habits of making sure the sink was clean at night and my bed was made the next morning. It did have a ripple effect, and the last two apartments I've lived in over a five-year period I received the entire deposit back when I moved out. Last August, my move was one block away and with the same rental company, so they just took it off my rent for the new place, which was also nice. Other habits I added include vacuuming often and making sure my cat's litter box is clean and fresh.

Great tips. In the UK houses are a lot smaller than those in the UK, so we have to be creative on space. For example, not many houses have a mud room, so have to keep coats & shoes etc in the loo, which is then called a cloackroom. We often also don't have a utility/room, so a washing machine is often in the kitchen. And a tumble dryer, if owned, is often in the garage. We also don't have a pantry but cupboards instead.

I also believe it makes your family stay connected. Living in a big place, you don't run into your siblings and spouse as much... it forces you to interact. You are also staying aware of what your children are spending their time doing.

Kallie, I appreciate your weekly tips. I really like how you explain the subject. It would be a nice refreshing to see what you did from move-in appearance years ago to currently use. I know you renovated the nursery, and Miles big boy room. Also it was great to hear and partially see Mr /Dad in your videos.

Thank you very much for doing this video. We just went from a two story home to an apartment the size of a hotel room because we are empty nesters now. I hate small spaces and get clostraphobic. This has given me some great ideas. I have been following you for about a year now and love your posts.

Love every tip in this video! We have a smaller home too and are expecting baby #2 in the winter. Love, LOVE this video. It's so practical and genuinely helpful. I sometimes see videos on how to organize a huge pantry and think they are ridiculous. Easy peasy. Trying to make my small space work for my husband and two teenage sons sometimes feels like a life size game of Blokus. All. The. Time. But we make it work because, like you, we don't want the headache of a huge mortgage. So thanks for creating content I can really use and relate to.

I live in a 613 sq ft house with my husband. I think we could use a bit more space (like three bedrooms instead of two) but all your reasons for loving your small house are the same reasons we love ours. Agree with all your tips, too! To make life more comfortable, I've cut way back on toiletries, massively downsized my wardrobe, avoided processed foods, limited furniture, and stopped buying in bulk. It all adds up! Living in a reasonably sized space really saves money in so many ways so we can spend it on more fun things.

Girl, yur videos just speak to my soul 🙌🏽 not only do i love that there is so much more space for activities, like step aerobics 😉 but I was happy to see that I’m already doing a lot of these things 👍 I’m always looking to get better and I love the idea of managing what comes into my house like an inventory. I also live in New England so my time if using outdoor space isn’t all year. I do a weekly purge and it makes me feel really good about clutter and the air quality in my home. When I have less stuff I feel like I can physically breathe better 👍

Love your tips and will definitely implement some even though we do have a "bigger" house! We mainly went for more space (4 bedroom, 2.5 bath) because my husband's parents stay for like 6 MONTHS when they come visit and I don't think I would be able to handle tripping over them in a small space for that amount of time hahaha. I'm just glad we have an eat-in kitchen and no dining room (those are complete wastes of space IMO!) and no more than 2 full baths to clean.

Love this video, we are in a smaller home too. The only thing that really drives me crazy is that we have a tiny kitchen, and as a person who loves to cook, this makes me nuts. The only thing I would want different, is a bigger kitchen- hopefully in a few years, knock on wood! :)

i'm about to move into a place with the smallest kitchen ever. one counter top to use for everything- dish rack, air fryer, chopping veggies, etc. i'm gonna make a stove cover to use as a removeable extra surface area!! now where i'm gonna store everything is another question lmao

Yes. We had a very small kitchen when we bought the house. For some reason someone in the 60s thought it's a great idea to have a separating wall. We removed the wall and now we have a very nice open kitchen with a nice island. So much more space to work with and I love it. I can finally put something out of the way without having to deal with it while cooking. So much better than stacking stuff and it's still in the way.

Tiny kitchen can be so inconvenient, but if we use the principle of minimalism and multifunction appliances, it can help so much! I find that my kitchen usually hosts the most clutter. I just made this video sharing how I quickly decluttered my kitchen so a nicer visual. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xmhSgtPLlt4.html xCC

Just found you yesterday and am so happy I did. I've watched several of your videos and love them - I even took notes because one of the things in my planner (just got that, too!) was too create a home care routine. We also have a small house (1100 sq ft) that because of its age (~100 years old) has less than ideal closets and not much wall space. I'm definitely going to think more about being creative with storage AND start a daily decluttering routine. But first, coffee - for sure, as I sip mine this morning and watch more of your videos. :) Thanks for all you do!

Great video!! I love my small home too-especially when it’s time to clean! I have wasted space (screened porch) the size of a small living room that’s not utilized. Plus my thought process was to not be house poor and be able to enjoy life via vacations.

Thank you, Kallie! So helpful! I love multipurpose rooms, furniture and things. I did flat surface cleaning recently and it had been too long because everything was dusty. I have bins under the bed and use vertical storage with shelves and hooks to hang things with handles. I love a tidy home but when I wait too long between straightening it becomes too overwhelming and who needs that? 🥰

Thank you so much for this! A lot of good tips here, some of which I already use but you have inspired me! The best tip of all was about the dining room table. It literally takes up most of the room and seats 8 but is only used Christmas, Easter and occasionally throughout the year and I also sew on it. You have made me realise that I need a smaller table that you can expand when necessary and some folding chairs. Simple but I never thought of it before your video! Thank you Kallie and cheers from England! xxx

Great video! My children are late teens and we have always lived in a smaller house. My problem is I'm a sentimental hoarder and have kept every scribble the kids have ever made. Now that they are older and i have become a little wiser I have started to declutter. The kids have picked a few pieces that mean something to them and the rest have been recycled. Life is learning😀Thanks!!

Yes! Make rooms do double-duty by being creative with decor and thoughtful about "things". My adult daughter, her teenage daughter, the hubs, me, two cats, and a Malinois/Pit mix all live together in 1100 sq feet over two floors. -- one bathroom :( -- Sometimes the dining room is a school office. Sometimes my dressing room is an art studio. And, I have to admit, sometimes it feels a bit crowded. I think I'll try your flat surface idea for a while. After all, if the visual clutter at eye level is minimal it should make a difference.

We did the same thing when we were buying. Savings was (and still is) a priority to us, so we bought a smaller fixer upper. It was a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom when we bought it but, with an unfinished 4th bedroom and 2nd bathroom. One of our bedrooms has evolved as our family and needs have changed. It was my dedicated home office when I worked from home, but now that I’ve started a new job and am back in the office, we’re converting it to a playroom for our kids with a small office area for managing bills (and the few instances I may need to work from home).

Ooooh fellow New England girl, I knew I liked you! I love the fast motion tidying sequences, I would love to watch a video of just a fast forwarded tidy sesh! Such good tips, I'm always having to get creative. Having a home for everything is my current goal/struggle - such a good tip and one I tell myself all the time. I'll have to work on keeping flat surfaces clear, some just have 'decor' on them but even decor accumulates clutter in my case. My dining table used to have so much crap on it all the time because I never used it, but since it has become my home desk, I keep it mostly clear and even can eat on it now (so shocking lol!) That has been a game changer as it helps me have good habits, and having it clear makes the room look so much bigger.

You give great advice and encouragement to help with issues that go on daily in our lives. Good points too like creating areas, making a space to live in and using that rug in your dinning room was a good example! I 'm like you in that way where I enjoy clearing my flat surfaces (spaces) all day long. I find a space for whatever comes into our home and you're right on that point too it does feel like the space is larger or even just roomier...doesn't feel like the space is closing in on me. Thank you for letting us see your toddler Finley oh I laughed out loud when you showed her in her jumper having so much fun! Her hair so black and that face of hers is angelic with a big smile whenever you show her on Video! She seems like a happy little girl! Thank you for letting us see her grow...she's a Doll! Love this Kallie! I've lived in a small studio, maybe 300 sq ft. for a while and I prefer small spaces. 🏡 I get overwhelmed in big houses. Totally agree! Everything in your home needs it's own place to go. Always go vertical, you have more space than you think. 😊 It's like a fun puzzle, figuring out where to put things! Think outside of the box. 😁💜

💯 I think all your tips are spot on. We have spent 15 years in a 1200sq ft home with 3 people plus cats and dogs. Our rooms have multiple functions and the lack of storage space forces us to be mindful and intentional about what we have and what we keep, and as you say clutter is so obvious that you are motivated to keep it under control.
