Making a good cut-out for a tree in Photoshop isn't that easy. We are lucky to have the AI on our side that helps us to remove backgrounds and replace the sky if we want it. However, we still have to come up with different solutions that make the final result realistic. If this trick helped you, leave some feedback in the comments!

you must have an old version of PS now if you press Q the select and mask option is not available and you can't select overlay either, basically this method doesn't work in april 2023

Great tutorial. In the latest part, if you add a complex background, with many different colours, instead of the solid colour and the mask, you can have a copy of that same background (with the mask), and the colour details on the leaves (or whatever you have) will match the background perfectly.

Great video. I took hiatus around 2018 and a lot has changed since then. I'm glad to know that my initial theory about the techniques used have not changed. It's one thing to "Defringe" and allow the automation to make key assumptions about your intentions. A more narrow field of "spray and pray", so to speak. However, taking the extra steps to refine the mask and Shifting Hue & Sat of infringing outlined color is so perfectly surgical that it helps keep professional retouchers employed. A few extra seconds can be all the time in the world when you're trying not to be replaced by cell phone applications. No doubt that using this tutorial will produce the best results for those interested in or earning a living through compositing images. Thanks for the work you're doing here. Your content is always clear and succinct, plus you stay on topic. I have been able to get back up to speed on all the enhanced capabilities in PS and LR thanks to your content. I feel like just saying "Thanks, bro" wouldn't match the quality I've received. Cheers!

You explained this really clearly, I think even kids would would be able to get this! I wasn't necessarily looking for this tutorial, but I have definitely learned something, and will hark back to this in times of need!

Fantastic! These are the kinds of Photoshop techniques that separate the pros from the amateurs. Non-destructive editing, great use of adjustment and clipping layers, other things I know I should be doing but usually don't 🤣 Subscribed.

The reason I felt compelled to respond is because of your, (to me,) original and most ingenious method of suggesting a Like and a Sub. BRAVO ZULU! I would rather prefer doing the sky selection using color channels as the sky is almost flat blue moreover the contrast between the tree and the sky is also very good so the channel trick will pull out the whole blue color from the image like a strong vacuum.

Good trick, however: 1, the edge should probably be matched to the leaves more than the sky because it will appear to undo the thickness you're trying to add back in. 2, hide the beginner layer as the sky colored fringe will show through the partial alpha and fight your edge color tuning above it. If anything duplicate the whole finished pro group to add more thickness, which should have the same effect as ramping a middle level slider on the masks (adjusting contour). Can make it a smart object as well to avoid having to change 2 groups equally.

Excellent tutorial thank you! A question about selecting layers: you show with the example of the filled circle that when you select the mask some pixels on the border are not selected and you use this to improve borders of the palm tree by inverting the selection.. what should I do if I need to select the mask including all of its pixels without leaving out the borders? I’ll ask you because a lot of times I have some problems of small areas in the borders not being selected.. thank you in advance if you’ll have time to answer!
