Join us this Sunday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m. CT for a new episode of Cliburn Masterpiece exploring a work written during the height of the Second World War and completed in 1944 by Russian composer, pianist, and conductor Sergei Prokofiev.
Host Buddy Bray interviews SMU associate professor and chair of musicology Dr. Peter Kupfer about how the impact of the war and the restrictions in Soviet Russia influenced the composition of Prokofiev's famous War Sonatas. We'll also discuss the many facets of bringing this eighth sonata to life with Russian pianist Georgy Tchaidze. The episode concludes with Georgy’s complete performance of the challenging work, from the Quarterfinal Round of the 2017 Cliburn Competition.
