Join us this Sunday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m. CT for a new episode of Cliburn Masterpiece exploring a work written during the height of the Second World War and completed in 1944 by Russian composer, pianist, and conductor Sergei Prokofiev.
Host Buddy Bray interviews SMU associate professor and chair of musicology Dr. Peter Kupfer about how the impact of the war and the restrictions in Soviet Russia influenced the composition of Prokofiev's famous War Sonatas. We'll also discuss the many facets of bringing this eighth sonata to life with Russian pianist Georgy Tchaidze. The episode concludes with Georgy’s complete performance of the challenging work, from the Quarterfinal Round of the 2017 Cliburn Competition.

This was the most compelling performance of this sonata I've ever heard. I understand this work on a deeper level and appreciate it all the more. Those "Chopin Op. 25 No. 12-esque" arpeggios (at 52:57, and in other places) are GORGEOUS!!!

Please continue these excellent videos. And thank you for covering repertoire that is a bit more obscure--very interesting!

Happy to learn about Prokofiev 8th Sonata. I only know the thrilling 7th. Wonderful pianist.

So shocking. There MAY be one or two pianists at this year's Cliburn that even comes close to this guy, imo. And I'm not exaggerating.

I heard the Concerto Finals and both of the Russian Finalists played a Prokofiev Concerto. I think Tchaidze played the 2nd., but they both played gorgeously, and I thought they both deserved to place, but the decisions were apparently made based on all of the rounds, and I only heard the finals. The 2nd. Prokofiev Concerto is so gorgeous!

That's the question we all ask ourselves...

@@elidebergamaschi2619 That year was unbelievably great. So many truly great pianists. Shockingly, I could have sworn two Russians were going to get medals. But BOTH got 5th and 6th. Insane. The Cliburn juries don't do very well, imo.

@@elidebergamaschi2619 And this is the reason I will never attend a live Cliburn again, unless I happen to be in the area. The judging is completely off the mark. This young man was a clear medal winner, and this performance of Prokofiev is beyond great. He plays like Kissin or Ashkenazy. Such power and brilliant clarity that we rarely hear anywhere. The fact that he didn't place is a travesty. There must have been a real psycho on the jury that year. Someone who steered the gold and silver away from Tchaidze intentionally, out of jealousy. All I know is GT is in the true upper echelon of pianists. Maybe it's all for the best though. Winning the Cliburn can brand you as a "competition winner" rather than a consistent professional artist.

THE PIIANIST IS WONDERFUL, BUT HE DOESN´T ALLOW FOR THE EBB AND FLOW OF SLOWING AND SPEEDING UP AS THE DIRECTION OF THE MUSIC CONSTANTLY VARIES. THIS IS NOT METRIC MUSIC BUT DAY DREAMING MUSIC IN CHANGE. A BIG INTERVAL GET A BIGGER SPACE TO EXPRESS THE PHRASES. IT SHOULD BE IN A CONSTANT STATE OF FLUX AND VARIATION TO ALLOW OUR FEELINGS TO STRETCH AND CONTRACT OVER THE NOTES. LIKE A BIRD FLYING. IT´S ALWAYS CHANGING UNTIL IT SLOWS TO A STOP FOR THE FINAL STOP.

I heard plenty of rubato. Not sure what you're referring to. Your comment is too poetic for me to understand.
