Impressive tutorial, quite long winded but I like that, the way you go through every step down to the smallest detail idiot proofs it, definitely a great approach for beginners :-)
There's a button on the toolbar called "paint mode" this allows painting of tiles (especially when combined with snap to grid) but it's wise to have map tiles as "backdrop objects" to save memory, and avoid the object limit in the free version Also for large square areas you can use "quick backdrop object" and change it from "solid color" to a "motif" in the property window.
