In this video I'll be installing the clicky GBA shoulder buttons I got from ‪@zedlabz‬ while I try out my new soldering iron. It didn't go as smoothly as I'd have liked but I did discover a means of being able to adjust the distance between the trigger and the switch which makes for a more customisable experience.

I just bought a GBA with a super cool case, but the triggers were broken in it. I had never soldered anything before, but this video made me realize maybe I can fix my own GBA triggers. This video was a great help! I even had to use the screw mod because the triggers I bought from Amazon were too short.

To shorten the travel, I think you can easily put a piece of small paper between the actual button and the shoulder button or just use hot glue.

Absolutely. I liked the screws because it allowed me to adjust it til it was just right. I've bought a box of tactile switches since so I have a range of sizes now

@@JoeBleeps I got another for you - the short version is that you can modify the tactile feel of the switches by making a small dent just off centre. I didn't have any replacement tactile switches until yesterday so I had to harvest the switch dome from a laser pointer to swap it for the worn out one in my GBA. While trying to break open the laser pen I did a bit of damage to the dome. I went and swapped it anyway (with the original rubber button on top) and it was satisfyingly clicky. A touch more tactile than the left side so it felt uneven. I then bought new switches (50 or 100 random 4 pin 6x6x4.3 tactile switches) and decided to do another dome swap for the other side. This time I did the swap without damaging the dome. The clicky feel was a lot stiffer... and suddenly I realised that little bit of accidental damage made a huge difference to the tactile feel. After making two small dents on the new dome and putting a screw in the shoulder - I've got two brilliant shoulder buttons. Now my problem is trying to fix the horribly mushy D-pad. Any ideas?

@@HarisF1 wow what a great little discovery! Might have to try that. As for the d pad I don't know, a fresh membrane might be the easiest thing to try, or you might be able to get a clicky overlay with little dome switches?

@@HarisF1If you're after a more tactile feeling Dpad, both FroggoCustoms and NatalieTheNerd have amazing tactile boards for that.

Looks like your using the wrong tip on your iron. Conical tips should only be used for micro soldering like small smds. What you need is a larger tip like a chisel. Using the right tip will make a world of difference.

New to soldering and modding electronics in general. Just like using the solder sucker method, would I be able to use solder wick instead? It seems like it would be an easier method? I installed a funnyplaying ips kit and I’m having issues with the left shoulder button not working even though the button is clicking. I’m definitely going to try and pick up some short travel triggers.

Solder wick will work but it depends on the quality of the wick you have

Not an issue because the clicky buttons have a plastic button push and I don't think the screw is going to trouble it 😊

The Engineer branded tools are really excellent quality. That's why I got excited about the soldering iron stand! But that solder sucker is the best I've used.
