Pay attention 9:50 - 10:45 ....... Sounds familiar? :) Cliff playing with his band Agents of Misfortune (which includes Jim Martin from FNM on the guitar) in a Battle of Bands, just moments away from joining Trauma.
+Juan Pablo Aybar well obviously it came from him I was just implying that we now know the intro to for whom the bell tolls was an idea that is older than Metallica themselves
The drummers name is Dave Diddanato (not sure if I spelled last name correctly). He is a very cool guy. I had the opportunity to meet him about 15 years ago. Walked into his garage & he told us all kinds of stories about him, Cliff, & Jim dropping acid at this place called Maxwell Ranch. On the wall in his garage... The Gold "Kill'em All" record that Cliff gave him. Blew my freaking mind.
Doom or be Doomed man just listen to the wah screams he‘s doing at about 1:00min.... That Rick is definitely one of the craziest instruments on the planet....
@@thecrossedtheroadfund4289 Here’s the kind of man to get kicked out of Walmart for insisting that standing in front of a broken bottle machine with a pink thong on in the middle of winter entitles him to being paid 5 cents.
@@oneaviatiorandminecraft cliff got crushed by a tour bus the year mop came out, which a lot of people call their breakthrough album so in a way, i guess you could say that with mop becoming big they became like the most famous metal band but in return cliff ended up dying in one of the saddest ways possible way sooner than he should've.
A legend in the making right here. Total Primus vibes before Primus was a thing. Man, the things this dude was gonna do in life until tragedy struck. We all missed out on an amazing musical journey with this man here. RIP Cliff, we will always miss you.
@@termsofusepoliceI reckon Cliff would've left during the making of the black album. If you've read enough about him you'll know he was stubborn and always insisted on doing things his own way. I can't see a scenario ending well where Bob Rock tells him to change what he's doing.
@@miketeabag6501there wouldn’t have been a black album with cliff around, I think the entire Metallica history after justice would’ve been completely different, and Justice may have sounded less raw and political
What a waste! 33 yrs ago today the world lost a aspiring musician that was on his way to the top. The Hendrix of the bass, he is just missed so much. RIP Cliff
not surprised by all the people that think this sounds horrible. i think it sounds very ambitious, an interesting experimentation in sound scape, i like it. interesting disonances, unstructured meter, chromaticism, harsh sounds. of course it's not structured on popular music, no catchy hooks or choruses here. maybe that is what is turning people off.
***** i think i could launch a strong argument that Cliff was actually the most musically talented member of Metallica, and that his strong song writing abilities are thoroughly displayed in Metallica's earlier material (even into ...And Justice For All). as far as the stories i have heard and interviews i have read/seen, Cliff was heavily recruited for Metallica and the band even relocated to facilitate his introduction to the band. this seems far from your version of the story where it was needed for "Lars and James telling him to chill". as far as i can tell, it was more like Cliff teaching James and Lars how to write songs after Dave was removed from the band.
gumbilicious1 Cliff studied music. I think he was the most knowledge owning in the band. He composed many songs and he played bass in this way many bass players dont bother thinking about. You can listen to the bass tracks of Master of puppets LP and become amazed. The fact he was playing such experimental noisy stuff and composing "From whom... " way before Metallica shows he was further ahead from the rest of the band. I would bet Metallica would have never been that good without him.
I agree for the most part, Cliff was an important musical influence and he seemed to be using more complex musical concepts than the rest of the band. but he didn't 'study' music formally (at least beyond high school), he wasn't a trained classical musician. he was influenced by many types of music, and he was a great musician but i am unsure if he even played in HS school band or had any music courses in community college. so it seems like all of his music 'study' was as informal as the rest of the band.
I agree with the initial comment very much so. it's my belief that people with advanced points of view as far as composition and musical possibilities create interesting pieces of art that aren't always pleasing to the ear, or pleasing to the masses. However they may showcase ability beyond the average musician. With that being said the songs approached by these individuals that due breakthrough to a large audience tend to be timeless, accredited, landmarks on their careers and cement their status as visionaries of art and more specifically in this case music.
This has probably been stated already but I think it's pretty cool that Cliff is wielding his Rickenbacker and Jim Martin is playing the same V he flew during all his years in FNM. These men knew what they liked by God!
This just made my day! had no idea there was any early footage like this of Cliff from back in the day. I've been listening to Metallica since the 1st week of september 86(when I started 7th grade) & been a fan ever since. This has put a big ol' smile on my face today. Thanks for posting.
they were all sorta connected. Kirk was good friends with Claypool. James and especially Cliff were friends with Jim Martin. pretty amazing - Metallica - Primus - Faith No More came out of that lot. all great but very different bands
I love how naturally trippy the colors of the degraded tape are. Man Cliff really knew how to get ethereal sounds of the bass. Taken far too soon. He was like the Jimmy Page of bass guitar.
It's funny how Jim Martin got this reputation as a meathead buttrocker in Faith No More because he played heavy riffs, but he was one of the genuinely weirder people in that band. And of course they turned into a more straightforward alt-rock act after he left.
WIKIPEDIA: Agents of Misfortune, entered the Hayward Area Recreation Department's Battle of the Bands contest in 1981. Their audition was recorded on video and features some of the earliest footage of Burton's trademark playing style. The video also shows Burton playing parts of what would soon be two Metallica songs: his signature bass solo, "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth", and the chromatic intro to "For Whom the Bell Tolls".[2] that explaines this
Cliff Burton was a prodigy, and a musical genius. Just listen to the intro to "Damage Inc." on the Master Of Puppets album and you'll hear what I mean. Still makes my heart skip a beat after all these years. Mind blowing.
I can’t imagine how amazing this would’ve sounded back in the day. We’ve more or less gotten used to this so I’d love to be in the 70s mindset of this being totally new
Sounds pretty psychedelic, it's pretty cool. I always wonder how much more of Cliff we could have. I really wish he was alive, that would be awesome. Unlike most people, not just because of Metallica, but first of all, he was a nice guy and also, I would love to see his continuous growth as a musician. What other albums past Master of Puppets would sound like? The songs, the names, I'm pretty sure most of them would be different. I don't know if he would leave Metallica, I don't think so, it seems the line-up would last forever if not for the unfortunate event.
maybe a Pink Floyd fan would be able to explain this to me... why did they play that song "One of These Days" so much in live concerts? What is the appeal of that particular song? It has nothing special to my ears, besides a bit of echo effect here and there. Besides that it is just numb to my ears... I only consider the "real" pink floyd to after right up until Dark Side too... after that it's an entirely different band
Cliff is about 17 to 19 years old in this video, its clear he had real talent as a songwriter and musician. I know Metallica has had some good bass players since Cliff died, but he really was the spark of the band. We miss him.
@@stumpy-my2ww It really isn't. If you look at him when he was in Trauma (1982) & then watch this video, his hair is longer & he just looks older with Agents of Misfortune.. Now compare Cliff what he looked like with Metallica in 1984 & with this video, he's simply identical. ..BECAUSE it was filmed in 1984.
Two bass legends and both from the Bay Area! I should probably mention I'm also from the Bay Area. Grew up in El Sobrante(also where les and kirk hammet are from), El Cerrito and San Pablo. When I lived in El Cerrito for a couple years I lived half a mile or so down the road from the Metallica house aka the "Metallica Mansion." But I was just a little 3-4 year old boy then(born in 1980) who didn't know metal from a hole in the wall... 😕 Sadly I didn't discover Metallica until I was 12.
@@RunningWolf-qu5cr Indeed. And even though that was The Black Album era, the first Metallica CD I actually bought was Ride the Lightning. IIRC I really liked the cover art and album title, so I went with it first.
I’ve got chills and Goose bumps now as I watch this. I was fortunate enough to see Cliff in 86. I guess the heaven’s couldn’t wait, they needed a Bass player. As we all wonder what could have been…
Okay I need this to be remade by someone. Sounds like an actual Cliff Burton-Primus collab. Not to mention it's great on it's own. The little wacky "knew-knew. Waaoooh" from Cliff is just too good.
"Sometimes when i listen to softer music than what we do, i feel like writing songs like that. right now though, there’s no time for that. but one day i’ll think it will happen". Interview: Cliff. September 26th 1986.
I couldn't sleep at all tonight's I've been binge watching bass riffs and I came across this......Will say this...Cliff inspired me to pick up a bass 3 years ago. Man was the Master of Bass.
Straight outta Castro Valley! Faith No More's Big Jim Martin and Metallica's Cliff Burton playing in Hayward's Battle of the Bands. You can hear "When the Bell Tolls" infamous opening notes in Cliff's solo. This belongs in the Smithsonian.
Damn, Cliff was one of a kind! Metallica WITH Cliff and Mustaine, what would that have been like? 3 of the greatest at playing their instruments and Lars who is the quintessential rockstar, I don't get excited about his playing BUT I love it when he opens his mouth! I want to hear every damn word that comes out of his mouth!
s Humphrey Lars' genius lies in his ability to Write incredible drum patterns to go with Hetfield's thunderous riffing (at least Pre Load) ... and in his musical arrangement ideas ~ I often imagine what Metallica would be like with Cliff, Mustaine, Lars and Hetfield...
A time capsule in video format captured in not the best quality, but we are so lucky to have it! This is a true gem. Thanks for sharing. Cliff Burton RIP
i dig this kind of experimental stuff!! its great to see Cliff doing this kinda stuff before Met! proves he got to delve into a lot of stuff before going that route!! nice to see this, thanks for posting!!! as a Cliff fan i appreciate this big time!! He's the reason i started playing!! damn i gotta do more videos, lol!!!
He woulda left when he got bass killed on AJFA. Maybe did a reunion but look at Newstead for career path similarity. Maybe even replaced by Newstead still. Stranger things have happened! Who really knows.
In the enventuality he wouldn't die I would have seen him doing collaborations with people like mikael akerfeldt and some others less and non conventionnal musicians. Ulrich and co. are so so pale in terms of creativity compared to Cliff Burton.... There is a reason Ulrich said Cliff was the band's soul.
I used to have a Metallica bootleg where this sounded like Cliff's "Anesthesia" solo (which wasn't like what was the album). The tone he got out of that setup was fucking amazing. He made that bass almost sound like a demented pipe organ it was so heavy.
That first part sounded like it could be a primus song. Just imagine les claypool spittin some lyrics to it. I wonder if he was there and got some influence. I love primus, and I love metallica and cliff burton.
This is Mind Blowing (:. Epic FIRE GREATNESS PERIOD (:. I think had Cliff lived he would have road the Metallica wave for awhile but eventually branched out into different experimental groups too progress his own musical creativity and take it too newer levels of mastery (:. He reminded me too much of a John Bonham or Jimmy Hendrix who through his own instrument was creating as he went (: lol him (:. RIP. Cliff EM ALL (:
It's even possible Metallica could have become the vehicle for that experimentation. I know they were planning on firing Lars after the Puppets tour, but then Cliff died so they went in a totally different direction than they would have. I'm sure their next album would have been metal, but James Hetfield talked about Husker Du being something he was listening to in that video interview with him and Cliff (somewhere on youtube, possibly Cliff's last interview iirc); Zen Arcade had a lot of out-there stuff, and James was also into stuff like Laibach. They did ultimately veer off the metal path, anyway, so I think it would just have been sooner and in a different direction than the one they did take.
