Yes but that's an IMO in the final analysis. The greatest might be yet to come. Depends on criteria you apply to your reasoning. Eg... in the genre of opera.

Cliff himself has said numerous times that he regretted that decision. I understand what he meant. I absolutely adore Cliff, but I'd rather met him when he was younger, and I prefer to see him when he was younger. Everyone wants to hold onto a certain image of their idol.

Who cares if Elvis was overweight or not. That's not a proper reason not to see him.. I Don’t believe his answer.. Probably Elvis didn't want to see him! Elvis the King forever!

If Cliff had gone to see him the journalist who said he could arrange it would have expected to get an interview/picture/something out of it - a good look or a bad look - it would have been a story? They were at the time reporting all the bad bits of his image and might have derided Elvis - Cliff possibly could have had a chance to meet Elvis - the Beatles certainly did!

By the mid-70's Elvis's star had faded drastically. There were already Elvis impersonators at the time, but when Elvis himself made the news it was always about his weight or his drug use. It wasn't until after he passed away that attention was renewed on his earlier work and on his best songs of his comeback years. The new interest in Elvis brought on a flood of re-releases of his music which has never ended and his star shines as brightly now as it ever did.

I agree that after the Aloha Special in 1973 and the divorce later that year that you saw a change is Elvis 74,75,76,77, where he was touring the same show basically non stop for the most part. But he was still selling out Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas as well as venues across the United States wherever he performed. Also his chart success was strong but on the pop charts it did diminish following the success of the Aloha from Hawaii album in 1973 where it was number one on multiple charts across the world, he did however continue to see success on the country charts and score number one albums. After turning 40, they did start to mention Elvis weight from 1975 on but the drugs were never widely known about to be reported on until the book Elvis What Happened was released in 1977.
