Hey everybody. Finally got this thing done! hope you enjoy the extreme suckage in this video. I certainly enjoyed looking back at old me fumble through this piece. Crazy how practice makes a difference eh? Comment below if you'd like to see the practice video next, or if you have any other video ideas or questions!
Previous videos you may like to check out if you haven't already:
• How to get SUPREME lea...
• I practiced ONLY THIS ...
(Ps. I realized while editing that there is a pretty big gap between years in the recordings I included in the video. I show videos from 2020, but really nothing from 2021 or 2022. I found the earlier takes to be most interesting, but also, since I never planned on making a progression video, videos from 2022 or earlier 2023 just don't exist. I mostly recorded mock takes into Logic, to hear and study the take, and then subsequently delete. I thought I would finish. learning this song far sooner than 4 years... so... yup.)

Inspiring! Need the “How to Practice Cliffs of Dover” video! With some tips and tricks on how the play the song in there, especially on some of those tricky parts 😁 You’re the man.

Yes, I too would like to see a how to practice video if you're up to it ! I think that the first thing is to slow it right down and learn each phrase one at a time. But I'm also aware that the guitar tone is really special so I'm guessing it is not that easy to dial it in.

Hey, you can't expect perfection at the outset. The old videos are just there to show you your improvement. I'll tell you what, I hear flashes of brilliance in your early play even if you don't.

Thanks for letting us see this man! It's definitely harder for you to watch than it is for any of us lol. Seeing the progression must be such a good feeling.

No doubt! Yeah, it's weird to see the progression. Especially on one song like this where it's more obvious to tell.

How about a weekly coaching session video where you teach some people how to play some sections with them on zoom.

There is hope for everyone! Unless you're like dead, or got what eric clapton has right now with nerve damage and arthritis, or you're beat deaf which happens to about 1 or 2 out of 50 people, or missing fingers, or live in gaza and you're getting bombed instead of given time to train... But aside from the obvious kind of road blocks that many have in this cruel and unfair world, it's possible to play like Eric! Great video boss. Give players like me hope that one day I will be able to play this whooole jam. I can only play lil parts of it but the whole thing? One day lol one day! Perhaps one day in like 10 or so years I'll come back here and wow you with my cliffs of dover instead of my cliffs of DOH ver lololol.

Nice work! Do you feel that your ability to concentrate is also improved over 4 years? I was able to play Cliff of Dover in the past, but I was super tired after performing it, both physically and mentally.

yeah man I would definitely like to know how you structured your practice for this. Like did you spend much time running scales, doing exercises for string skipping and whatnot, or were you just breaking down the song into chunks and working on that? Thanks for the vid, keep em coming!

Thanks man. I haven't gotten around to making that video yet. Busy with life you know. But recently I started brainstorming what the video would look like and the content in it. Hopefully there's a large enough interest with the people who've subscribed, and hopefully I'll be able to film it soon!

Hey man, really loved both of your cliff videos. Where did you learn this song from? Any recommendation on tabs or books that you learned this song from? Thanks a ton mate
@jonasanttila
@jonasanttila 7 месяцев назад
I learned it off a few different tab/ lesson videos on RU-vid. Some of them get some parts wrong, so it helped initially to get my bearings, but then you need to rely on your ears to make sure you're getting the right notes. I watched a ton of Eric johnson videos, both of cliffs, and just him explaining how he plays in general. And repeat these steps until you really understand the song.

I saw your video you posted a few weeks ago and was very impressed and inspired. I did have some questions regarding your experience: 1.) Did you learn this song by ear? 2.) 4 years is a long time to devote to practicing one piece. What were your goals in the beginning? Did you achieve them, or did they evolve as you progressed? 3.) In retrospect, what were some of the benefits you gained from practicing this piece of music(or any piece of music like this) to such lengths and intensity? 4.) Were there any drawbacks? 5.)Are there any things you would consider doing differently if you had to start from the beginning all over again? I am considering taking on a project like this, and I'd definitely be interested in watching a tutorial on how to practice this song or another song like it. Anyway, awesome playing and videos and thanks for letting us have a peek into your process. Cheers!

Wow these are all really great questions, and would really like to answer all of them. I am going to make a video on practicing at some point, and will definitely include your questions in that video because they are really good. Thanks for leaving a comment!

I didn't want to be too critical of him, but this was the absolute worst way to learn a song. Maybe it was just something he did when he was born, but if you already knew the techniques in this song, you could make short work of it with a metronome and slow, perfect practice.

Question for ya, regarding your improvisational skills, once you felt comfortable prior and post ClfsODvr, did it open up the fret board for you? Great improvements! And I get you on weight lifting and playing guitar, they don't go well together.

Just gotta listen to stuff and figure out what sounds you like and then figure out how to achieve it. Also, most of the tone is in your hands, so becoming a better player helps too.
