Well I've come across this film a bit late , but I must say it has broken my heart . I am a 60 year old woman from oldham who travelled from there overnight to butlins cliftonville hotels for a fantastic 2 weeks holiday . We did this from me being around 10 years old until my daughters were the same age . Another world !!!!!!
might just be a coincidence but we travelled to butlins in cliftonville in the mid seventies and met a family from Oldham, a lad called Gary Kempster who had an older sister as I remember...we travelled there from Liverpool, me my 2 brothers and mum and dad ,great days but just intrigued if you may have known him ,it just might be a Oldham/ liverpool thing but we had great times there and I was doing a bit of reminiscing 😊sad to see it like this 😢
@@perrylindsay6682 yes it's me you were friends with my brother Gary and I was friends with Jackie. I,m not sure if she was your sister or cousin . I've sent you a message on another cliftonville video .
hello Yvonne, yes I have got a brother Gary, I also had a brother called Tony ,dont worry I'm not being morbid when I write this but he passed away in 1979 ,the only reason I mention this is because I took the most surreal phone call of my life when your Gary phoned our house about a week after Tony passed ,could you imagine two 13 and 14 year olds having that conversation, a bit strange to say the least 😅.. probably the last time I spoke to your Gary 😊,you're right on our Jackie and suzy and younger sister Joanne and brother called Jimmy(cousins) who your Gary became mates with the year before we went ,I think I half live in the 70s now ,I remember everything from then but cant remember what happened last week 😅, think I'm getting old ( 57 now ) ,but yes great days and thank you for getting back ,made my day ,not surprised your Gary went to live in Blackpool because if there was ever going to be an entertainer ,it was him ,I still remember his bowler hat he wore and him calling you Vonnie ,sad really ,I sound like a stalker 😅😅,like I say great to hear from you and hope you're keeping well ,dont forget to mention us to Gary 😊👍
I will definately tell him . I remember now he told me about the phone call to you .Sorry for your loss . I love watching the videos . They bring back lots of happy memories . Me and my husband and our daughters and Gary and his family went back to Cliftonville about 95 . It was still great then ! Best wishes to your family , we northerners know how to have a good time don't we . God Bless .
Its was such a great place. Even in the mid eighties it was still good. Coach loads of visitors from the midlands use to use all the hotels along the eastern esplanade . I use to stay in Cornwall gardens just up from the Walpole bay hotel. Always a hive of entertainment along the lido. Sad to see how it has declined. Great video though.
Went to the Butlins Holiday Hotel about the 90's. All the way driving from Manchester, the best time ever, my four year old son got personal football training from Southampton ex player Bobby Stokes, he liked a drink but didn't let it spoil his giving training to the kids, was a great guy, My young daughter became ButlinsToast of Cliftonville (we used the toast of the breakfast and pinned it to her dress 😀) thank you for bringing back a great memory. 👍
Went on holiday there with my darling parents in 1984/5. We stayed in Cliftonville as my mum didn't want to stay amongst the "Hussle and bustle" of Margate. You could see then that Margate was going downhill, the place looked dirty and scruffy. Don't get me wrong we had a fabulious holiday and the place will always hold dear memories for me.
My mum was from Margate and every summer holiday as a child we would travel by train to either stay with my Nan and grandad or with my aunt and uncle. I remember the lido and all the other places. I want to go back as the last time I was there was 1973 as a 14yr old. 😢😒
Thank you for making this video. I used to holiday at Butlins Cliftonville all the time in the mid 1980s, and remember these locations vividly. Oh, how it's even changed since then, let alone from its hey-day. I agree with the other comment about it looking very sad now - not just the derelict buildings / lido , but there is something missing. I really hope the lido project realises its dream, and that whole complex is given a new lease of life. It's nice to see the outdoor sea pool in your clip - still being used as well. That is wonderful. I swam in there many times. And I am sure I remember going down in the cliff lift back in the 1980s ? It looks like it isn't working anymore. Thank you again.
Glad you liked the video, my father lived in Cliftonville during the 70s and 80s and worked as a milkman so I have a connection with the area. Its a shame about the Lido, the outdoor pool has filled up with sand and the concrete is crumbling away. I noticed that the Lido at St Mildred's Bay, Westgate has silted up with sand.
@@JeremyVaughanPostcards It is really sad to know that. I think it's been a huge mistake letting lidos become derelict in this country. Thankfully, so many have been saved and are still in use. I really hope that Margate's gets the treatment it deserves. It would be great to see it restored and in use again. I am so glad that the sea pool is still there though - and looks to be in good condition. I live in Blackpool and they pulled down their outdoor bathing pool so there is nowhere to swim outdoors here. I would love them to build a sea pool like the one in Cliftonville.
I used to holiday in Cliftonville regularly as a child in the 50/60s and I am doing a coach trip there later this year. I remember the beach at Walpole Bay very well and I have one of those old postcards on my wall. I do hope they can do something with the Lido.
Hi Jeremy, this and indeed all your videos are both fascinating, somewhat sad and really well put together. My friend and I run something called Cols Kent bike tours, which has a 2-hour Margate/Cliftonville ride. It'd be lovely to meet up with you one day to compare notes?
Hi Col, thank you for your kind comments, your the first person to pick up on the sad part. That might be the melancholy backing music I got free from the Google music archive. Checked out your website, looks like your on to a winner. Is winter effecting your sales? I made these video's this summer, what with the lockdown and cabin fever. Yes, it would be good to meet up.
@@JeremyVaughanPostcards THANK YOU SO MUCH JEREMY FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL REPLY, YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE A MILLION DOLLAR'S.YES MAY BE IN THE SUMMER TIME I WILL TAKE A TRIP DOWN THERE. LOTS OF LOVE FROM ME AND PLEASE DO STAY IN TOUCH. XX
