As an electrician, our jobs are notoriously difficult, but these guys are on a whole different level.

It's easy to see why groundskeepers, namely tree trimmers is the most hazardous job in the country with more work caused deaths than law enforcement coming in at 19. These people are severely underpaid.

I'm no expert... I've only chopped up trees after a hurricane but I can tell that this man is able to line up multiple logs like he did at the bottom... He looks like he's done this more than once. I'd hire him.

The deeper wedge makes the trunk lean that's why he is cleaning and evening it all out to get the right lean. When he dose the back cut it's even all the way across the face and slow to allow Issac Newton to take over. %100 boss at his job

What Nelson fails to realize he is not cutting the tree from the ground. He’s doing it up in the air and as you can see he perfectly dropped it on top of the other piece’s of the tree already dropped.

I use to do this for a living. About 4 years ago. Kinda miss it but not really. And your notch was perfect. Specially for a tight fall like that.

The critics amaze me. As someone who’s not a professional arborist but has had first hand experience cutting down large trees… this guy knows exactly what he is doing. Any little bit picks on the comments.. when you are an extremely experienced professional in any field.. you alter slight things to your style. There were no major safety violations or reckless actions. Oh and if people think guys don’t one hand a chainsaw on those trees all the time.. then you haven’t seen it done before. It’s common.

I'm always impressed by these professionals.

Never do that when the entire tree is above you. The weight could shift the wrong way.

One of the hardest things to do in a physical labor jobs is trust the equipment and tools to do what they’re supposed to without malfunction. I could barely go 30 ft up in a scissor lift without having an anxiety attack. Hats off to this guy

In that situation a face/sink cut of up to 80% the diameter is perfectly fine and is usually the best option. He's not falling, he's dismantling. Totally different ballgame. Nicely done 👌

His notch for a tight space is perfect . If the notch was smaller the tree would fall further out. If he was on the ground it would be different and similar. To reduce the kick back of the tree n dont come back to you . This guy is dope.

24 years an arborist, I might have taken a smaller wedge, and I would definitely have used my top handle. The large wedge takes away a lot of control when you make your hinge, because the hinge is shorter, and you have less back cut to use as leverage if you need to use a felling wedge to tip it.

This is perfectly in line with what most pros do when the drop zone is tight and when felling from height. I am NO pro, but I can think of three reasons they choose to do this. The hinge is farther back so the log doesn't move as far forward as it falls. In addition, when tied to the tree you can't easily give it a push to get the fall started and I wonder if gusts of wind might make a log with less clear direction harder to start the drop. So a deeper notch allows a thicker hinge. Third, I wonder if a deep notch causes less lateral deflection of the spar as the log falls, reducing the sway that happens after the hinge breaks. Does anybody have any other remarks as to why deep notches are preferred by climbing arborists?

Man it takes some balls to do that job. I worked with a guy in construction that did this as a side job and he would put those spikey boots on and run up a giant tree in seconds. Shits wild man lol. And also you gotta be PERFECT with which way the limbs fall and everything- PERFECT, you got power lines in the way a lot of times and houses and cars and all that- it ain’t easy considering the layout of every tree is different- different weight distribution and everything.

It literally had the same length as the others on the ground. You know your having a good day when it hits the ground and rolls next to the others.

Larger, wider notch in order to minimize shock load on the tree by reducing the amount of holding wood. As the stem swings down, you finish the cut with minimal snapping of the holding wood. Good job.

I mean, it's a deep notch, but the fibers on that tree seem to hold it up really well. Personally, i wouldn't risk it from lack of experience, but you seem to know what you're doing. Job well done!

As a guy who does this everyday, you want a deep notch when flipping logs… cutting a deep notch, past the center of gravity, ensure the log will tip without having to push on it.

One of the hardest jobs i ever did! I always give mad respect to my fellow arborists! People truly don't realize how difficult that is. You're 100ft in a tree running a LETHAL piece of equipment trying to fell logs into very precise spots!

To the comments saying he is doing it wrong, he has all ready topped the tree ,he is cutting about 5 to 6 foot pieces coming down. Coming down like that is the best way to notch helps the piece fall with minimal effort and and if you notice it let’s it go away from the tree a little more. If cutting down a whole tree would not recommend cutting that deep, and he probably already knows that.

Been a tree climber for about 2 years now and trust me it’s definitely scary, especially when your ascending the tree your about to work in. However, after your first few cuts in which ever tree you’re in, you become much more confident and focused on what you’re doing (assuming everything is going smoothly). It’s a great feeling when you come down and see all the work you just did. I always take a few looks back at my work and think to myself, damn, I just did that :)

Well im an arborist myself and yes, its way to deep , he has no control over the tops, no hinge wood, , cuts with 1 hand... Uses 2 soft lines, and no way to get down quick... Dude seems like a cowboy to me, and i bet other is the game feel the same way.

I’m an iron worker with no problems at height but I wished I learned this trade instead. the thrill and satisfaction these guy must experience has to be something else. The skill is next level!

It would be too deep if he was felling an entire tree, but since it’s just a segment hr could basically cut all the way through if he was feeling balsy

I do this as well, and as an arborist I will say that while iv had many close calls in the path to learning, trusting in your skills is key. It's the 3rd most dangerous job in the US, but once you understand it, it's far more fun than it is scary. Like a game. I love this work! Well done my brother! Stay safe

I'd be a nervous wreck up there. Yall make it look so effortless. I've fell some decent size trees and even from ground level keep me nervous. So far no accidents.

I like the machines that tree companies use now. I had a tree removed in my yard a few months ago. The guy had a machine that was a grappler and chainsaw at the top of a crane. He would move the grappler next to a large branch, grab the branch, saw it off, and then place it carefully on the ground. The tree was huge and in between my house and the neighbor. Branches were hanging over both houses. He cut this 80 or 90 year old elm down, cut up the trunk and branches, and hauled it all away in just a few hours.

That Notch is beautiful.... I've always used a deep Notch for controlling the fall... it's not a harvest thing, so depth of a Notch can be as large as the faller chooses...

You could not pay me enough. This guy deserves a raise.

It's simple physics, people. The further the notch goes past the center of the stem, the further the center of gravity is towards the front of the notch. This only works on straight up and down trees though. It's why you generally only see this notch technique used when climbers are chunking out big stems from the top down.

Learned this stuff when I was stuck using hand tools cuz under 18. It was a great way to stay in shape, and keep your wits about you. Gotta have your attention on like 50 things at once at a given moments notice. Only think that kept me from continuing once 18 was military. Love the work being done. Deep notches like this are for close fall cuts. Usually there are things you don't want getting hit by a piece of wood falling like a wrecking ball.

Once worked at a bike shop. I wasn't working there as a mechanic but ive built my own bikes and im plenty knowledgeable on everything to know how to do all the fun complicated stuff. Guy brings in a lower end bike for maintenance and i think he had an issue. Hybrid bike. Service tech(who happens to be the Service team Manager(SM), is helping him. Guy: "I'm trying to get this fixed." SM: "OK, great let's pop it in the stand and take a look." Guy: "OK, awesome" SM: "What have been your issues?" Guy: "well it has some weird rubbing in the brakes." Guy goes on to give out his own theories, some of which were possible others not so much. The SM at this point had figured out he had contamination on his brakes, what from he wasn't yet certain. He goes to tell the guy this and that he might need new pads and a new brake rotor and the Guy wasn't having any of it. Tells the SM he's wrong and told him a likely completely made up way to fix the issue. I say likely made up cause I couldn't figure out any correlation between what he said and the issue at hand. And apparently, neither could our SM. After some more conversation, guy just tells our SM to do what he's told. Eventually our SM told him that he could sand down the pads and rotor and use rubbing alcohol to clean them. And guy said, "Oh so like hand sanitizer?" After a moment of shock, SM told him "no, if you use hand sanitizer you will likely need completely new brakes. Which would be far more expensive." Guy eventually walked out of the store after telling SM he sucks at doing his job. I personally hope he ended up using hand sanitizer.

It's called an under mining cut. We use it for chunking wood and dropping select stems. It shifts the center of gravity and helps the piece flop easier. Not recommended if you need a hinge for control.

I did this once without any above ground experience; pinched the saw and rope got caught and nearly took my leg off when it went down. One of the scariest moments of my life.

The deep notch also makes it so the log stays on the hinge longer and can make a full flip before it hits the ground. Nice work👌

Who ever commented that the notch is too deep has never been up a tree or never chunked one down and landed the logs flat. I love peoples uneducated criticism.

Just seen comment on my comment. The reason for not going too deep with notch is on a tree that may be unbalanced one way or another, a deep notch might not leave enough meat on the backside for smooth felling and could break in a bad direction. Especially when over structures. You loose your insurance quickly with bad cuts. It is not so critical when chunking down straight pine log but just being consistent with your cuts will always reduce likelihood of error.

I could never do this job. Hats off to these guys and their gigantic brass balls
