You forgot to record the horrible way down. 5 hours of slippery stones under the sun with no sleep, no energy in your body and two toilets for everybody. For me it was the hardest experience ever :(

Best is taking bus tour which come and pick you up at your hotel around 4am and take you to 5th of Fuji where video started. it still gives you nice sunrise. After you enjoy hot sweet sake inside, BUS WILL TAKE YOU BACK TO YOUR HOTEL BY 7AM! :D

I climbed Mt. Fuji last summer, and I'm so glad I used proper hiking shoes while climbing up and down the mountain, especially the way down

Ok, so it appears my Mt. Fuji expedition was very different. I went there on June (off season). I was staying at a hostel, waiting for good weather. I had booked 1 week, and on the 4th morning, Clear Skies! My hostel manager actually drove me up to one of the stations, and I started climbing alone. Met a random Japanese man halfway through, and we teamed up. NO other people were seen. We did the climb, circled the crater, and walked back. Pretty amazing!!! Be aware that there are no public buses off season, or you can be lucky to stumble on a random person, who will be like "I will drop u off at your guesthouse!"

Googled Mt Fuji and learned that it was the tallest mountain in Japan. So I went "Huh! I wonder if I could climb the tallest mountain in my country". That was before I realised that the tallest mountain in my country is the freaking Mt. Everest.

Fabian Flat surfaces may be boring but they are so much more convenient for transportation. Where I'm from, Nepal, there were some districts that were inaccessible up until 5 years ago because constructing a road there was next to impossible back then because of the mountains. But, mountains do make for beautiful scenery. :D

at the 5:00 mark, my reaction was "oh, they actually have people making sure that the tourists don't go to sleep in sub-zero temperatures and die on their benches". His reaction was "Oh, a crudely made dark lord of the sith wants to ruin my friends snooze. What an asshat. Time to eat my chocolate I suppose" I've seen that part three times now, laughed just as hard every time xD

I was a "bullet climber", and ill prepared. Only a light jacket and thin hardshell pants. I still made it to the top in about 4 hours or so. But once there, slept against some locked door. And when I woke up, I was freezing my rear off. I actually descended about 500 ft to a sheltered area , just to warm up, and then had to go back up for the frozen sunrise. Lesson learned. Bring warm clothes. Very warm clothes. And a pillow.

I had to come and re-watch some of your old videos while reading your book and I am really enjoying them (both the old videos and the book)! You've accomplished so much throughout the years, and grown a lot as a person and content creator. The book was a great idea. Reading about your ups and downs, making difficult decisions, setting goals and pushing through even when it's not always easy is super motivating. All of it wrapped in a great sense of humour. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you can achieve in the next 10 years and in the meanwhile I'll get back to working on my personal goals. Thank you for this motivation, it was much needed!

yea that's the only part about it putting me off it. Had dreamed about doing it if I could ever visit. Just not up for a vertical Disneyland. I'd have to leave the wife n kids in the room too to do it because I know that wouldn't go well. Too bad though I'd love to have done it.

My dad and I did this when I was a kid. Hardest thing I have ever done behind quitting smoking but also the most rewarding. It doesn't look hard but, OH MY GOD! My Dad had to keep pushing me along. We bought the walking sticks and had them stamped at every station. He still has his but mine got blown away in Hurricane Wilma when I lived in Ft. Lauderdale. I would HIGHLY recommend doing this for anyone visiting Japan. It is the greatest feeling when standing at the top looking down on creation. Thanks for posting this. It really brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

Yeah it 2600yen one way to station 5 by coach which was fairly reasonable - sorry to hear about the rain. Last year some friends went up in the rain and it sounded like the worst experience ever so passing on the climb was a good move!

I dreamed of coming to Japan, living here and then sitting at a dockyard somewhere with Japanese guys playing poker and drinking sake! I'm still working on the second part of that dream!

Only if you visit tourist area though. But I'm pretty sure a bottle of water in Singapore is at most $3 SGD (232 yen) rather than Mt Fuji at horrifying 500 yen (6.16 sgd)

I went up Mt Fuji yesterday over the Gotemba trail and it was really surprised cause it was very different than what I thought it would be like: - it's easily doable in a day trip: 8h up and down including 1h at the top - there was no one around (this might be due to a different trail and off season though) - the climb is long but not technically difficult, there's no climbing sections or anything - going down the gravel is fast and a lot of fun

I really liked how 95% of the people on the crowded part of the mountain top were sitting down, to be considerate of those behind them so everyone could see the view. I wish everyone behaved this way and were considerate in America.

You didn't miss much not having a reservation at one of the station inns Chris. You are squeezed together head-to-toe with dozens of people in a blistering hot space to sleep. I maybe got a 2 hour nap in, but my buddy stayed awake the entire time. We ended up leaving early and hiked the remaining mountain due to the sheer discomfort. The congestion of people delayed at various switchbacks was easily the most annoying part of the climb. The sunrise was magnificent and I absolutely do not regret climbing Mt. Fuji, but this Japanese proverb rings absolutely true: "A wise man will climb Mt Fuji once; a fool will climb Mt. Fuji twice". The onsen and ryokan stay after climbing though: HEAVEN ON EARTH

Closest I've ever seen Mt. Fuji was from on a Shinkansen bullet train on my way to Tokyo. Even at the far distance it looked awe-inspiring. I certainly wouldn't mind a climb just for that sunrise alone. Gosh that view looks absolutely breath-taking.

Ive heard that if you go on a weekday and not close to a holiday and the crowds are smaller. I kinda like seeing so many people around if I’m on a hike somewhere. If you fall or get hurt, you’re not alone!

That's almost insane!! Here in Italy, in vending machines, you pay from 50c (for the local brand) to 1€ (the most expensive brand like Ferrarelle)for a 1/2 liter bottle. In convenience stores you can buy a 6 pack of 1/2 liter bottless for less than 1,90 € Why in the world, you have to pay so much for a plain bottle of water?
