Climbing Mt. Shasta in a Day!

Hovering just over 14,000FT, Mt. Shasta mountain is a legendary active volcano in Northern California. Climbing (or hiking, if you can call it that) to the top in the winter and spring months requires mountaineering 7,000FT straight up through the snow and ice of Avalanche Gulch, only reaching the summit after a crawl up the infamous Misery Hill. While most people break the hike up into two days, we decided to challenge ourselves and see if we could summit Mt. Shasta in a single day. While we accounted for as many of the elements as we could, our weather forecast vastly underestimated the wind gusts at the summit, where we were forced to battle against 85 mph wind to reach the top. Type 2 fun at its finest!
DISCLAIMER: The climb to the top of Mt. Shasta is a technical route. It should not be attempted without the proper gear and experience. As always, hike at your own risk.

Again, great meeting you there! Car to car was hard but an amazing time. Shasta is a serious mountain, im 2/4 up there after last weekend, so its definitely a serious place, and I commend the effort. Great job, and again, what a pleasure, you guys are super nice and gracious (they stopped to have a conversation with me at 13k). Climb on!

Bennett! Was so great running into you -- you really gave us a lot of encouragement just when we needed it, as our legs were starting wobble a bit. We were actually talking on the way down about how glad we were to run into you up there. Hope you had a great descent, and got to enjoy that incredible glissade! --A

I actually remember watching your Shasta vid a while back when I first started seriously looking into this climb, so thanks for the beta :) You totally understand how much filming eats up your time! But so worthwhile getting to look back and re-live the adventure. Hope you're doing well ♥️ -E

@@LiveHardxLoveHard Reminds me of when I was trying to hike to the top of Humpheys Peak outside Flagstaff, AZ. The wind there was wicked above tree line! My hat blew away due to the wind. It took two attempts in 2 years but I finally made it to the top!

I loved the cheerful personalities of this couple. What an extreme day and something to always be proud of. Amazing positive attitude, I could never be that way but I appreciate it in others. And I know all about this mountain and what it takes to summit, especially in a single day, very difficult. They not only displayed clear competence in the high altitude mountain environment but also the wisdom to decide during hardship whether to continue. I would trust this couple to lead me just about anywhere after seeing this.

Thanks very much -- that really means a lot to us to hear that. As we've gotten into harder and harder adventures, we've been finding that keeping a positive attitude is definitely the key to success. Preparation and training are of course crucial, but when we're tired and freezing 14,000 feet up, it's the optimism and positivity that gets us through for sure!❤️

Shasta is a harsh mistress, but even mountainous California wears a special smile up there. It’s also considered to be a “harmonic convergence” location, like Sedona. I don’t go in for all that, but when I first climbed it in ‘75, my mother had passed a couple weeks prior, and behind my goggles, I finally mourned her with honest, unselfconscious tears. So my motto became, “Mount Shasta - come for the climbing, stay for the healing”

Of the many videos of yours that I have watched, this was the first one during which I was worried for your safety! I always know you both hike and climb safely and have turned back when conditions require, but that was some dicey wind. I'm so glad you were able to cross this off your bucket list. You're so right, Chris, and we felt similarly. As it turned out we handled the wind ok, but we really didn't know exactly what was going to happen once it got super fierce. Like, can wind that hard blow a big piece of ice into you and break something? We were definitely wondering about those kind of things as we got toward the top, but thankfully everything went ok. SO stoked that we're inspiring you to get out there -- that's all we need to hear to keep us motivated to keep making vids! ❤️

Thanks for putting this together and posting it! I’m sure it added to the work of getting up this challenging peak, but it brings it all back to those who’ve been there and introduces those who haven’t to another world. Congratulations on your persistence on a rough day! I’ve made four attempts on Shasta. All three on Avalanche Gulch were successful- one right of the Heart and through the Red Banks, one left of Heart, and one right of Heart and Red Banks. One the last one we were passed on the descent by a guy doing the one day trip as his last of the Lower 48 14ers. As we were glissading, he passed us on foot! I tried the one day effort on Clear Creek in a low snow year when Avvy Gulch was melted out. Made it above the Thumb and decided to turn back when I met the lone party above me coming down.

Thank you so much Nakia! We've both learned that being your own hype man, though it seems ridiculous, is actually such an important quality to have, both on and off trail. As I started doing harder and harder climbs, I soon learned that doubting myself was a surefire way to make the whole ascent miserable. It's one of the many beautiful things I've gotten to learn from these mountains! ♥️ -E

@@LiveHardxLoveHard There's a lot of anomalies around Mt Shasta and the mythical buck is one of them. There's many reports from hunters shooting at it and it dissapears. The day I saw it I was exploring a ridge line to see how far up it I could go. I was around 11,500ft well above the tree line and stopped for lunch, just out of the wind, in a small group of rocks. As I was sitting there I heard some small rocks going down the side of the ridgeline and looked up to see the most magnificent buck I'd ever seen. My first thought was this is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of bucks! I went into my backpack to get my camera and by the time I looked back up it was no where in sight. I could see the whole area and it just completely disappeared. Another of those magic, unexplainable moments on the mountain!

Lol at the "Type 2 fun at its finest" in the description. I love how you guys really show all the emotions (anxiety, overcoming said anxiety, hyping yourself up) that hiking/mountaineering can stir up. Elise, I do both of those tricks (and more) while out. I live in Ridgecrest so most of my hikes are in wind. (Death Valley and Eastern Sierra's). You guys are so rad!!!
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 года назад
Haha! On the drive back I was thinking WOW that was sooo many hours of type 2 fun! 😂 I recently discovered those anxiety/stress reduction techniques and so happy I did. I do struggle with anxiety in general, and adding in the rapid heart rate up there I always run the risk of a panic attack, so it's something I've been trying really hard to work through. Would love to know what other strategies you use out there, and what climbs you might recommend in the Eastern Sierra!
@mariceladaini9304
@mariceladaini9304 2 года назад
@@LiveHardxLoveHard There is Cirque Peak, Independence Peak, Owens, Scodie Mountains, and Mt. Heckel that are very Type 2. Lol. But they are fun! Langley is also very fun and relatively easier to get permits than Whitney. Another de-stressor technique I use when I start to feel anxious is to practice "rooting" ( yes even on a steep mountain). I pretend that roots are extending from my feet into the ground below me . Sometimes, if I'm feeling particularly brave and am not in a risky place I will try to time or wait for my panic attack. I know it sounds weird, but for me it works.

I LOVED seeing this (though pretty scary at times)! I had a feeling you would go to Mt. Shasta soon. My partner, I, and a private guide climbed the Hotlum-Bolam Ridge (north side) a year ago. Like Elise, Mt. Shasta was on the top of my bucket list. Due to the high winds, low visibility, exposed glacier, and my minimal mountaineering experience, we topped at 13,200+ ft before turning back. Still, it felt extremely special being there. We were the only ones on the north side for the entire time we were there! I wanted to make it out again this year buuut I got pregnant. Congrats, Mari! OMG that wind was insane at the top -- good for you for sticking with it!! Did you camp at the lake or do it all in one push? If you camped, at least the wind wasn't too bad down there by the lake, at least when we passed it. ❤️

@@LiveHardxLoveHard I camped at the lake. It was my first time doing any sort of mountaineering so I made sure to go with a guide to learn how to do it right. Not a bad trek for my first time putting on crampons! You guys keep inspiring me to do more, so thank you for sharing a bit of your life with us!!

@@mcivilini That is very smart -now you can take those skills you learned properly into other adventures. And wow, summiting Shasta for your first mountaineering adventure is really impressive!
