Pinta Benchmark is another of the Arizona 2000 ft. prominence peaks, and it is located on the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Arizona. To access the area, you have to have a permit. The road that leads out to the peak is for authorized personnel only, so you are forced to do an 8 mile road walk (one way) before you begin to actually climb the mountain. It also requires 4WD and high clearance to get to the start of this road. My buddy Matt was kind enough to drive us there in his Jeep, and we made the long road walk and the climb of the peak. We both had a good time, and were also glad to check this peak off the list.
The area is used by illegal border crossers, especially the canyon that we entered and took up to the summit. There is a lot of trash all throughout the canyon, and it is a shame that it detracts from what is a really beautiful area.
You can get permits for the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, and the Barry Goldwater Range here: bmgr.recaccess.com

Hi Birt, thanks, and yes, it is a beautiful place. It's far out, and you need 4WD, so it keeps it pretty isolated.

Good video. That's a long drive and a long walk for a hike. Good thing you got it done before the temps got hot. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos. Hopefully, you don't run out of mountains anytime soon.

Hi Doug, thank you and thanks for watching. We were both glad to get this one done, and pretty soon it will be pretty hot for it. Thank you, and there are still tons of mountains that I want to get to in AZ. I'll try to get to as many as I can. Hopefully the videos help anyone who wants to do climb them themselves.

That strange tree you commented on is an Elephant Tree ('torote in Spanish, Bursera microphylla by scientific name), found only in the hottest (actually, it's avoidance of frost rather than just heat) desert areas of the Sonoran Desert. Very fragrant. Apparently related to frankincense--hence the aromatic smell.

Hi Walt, thank you for the information. I never took the time to see if I could find out what that tree is yet, so I appreciate the info. That’s neat that it only grows in those warmest areas. It’s definitely a beautiful tree.

If I have an 8 mile road walk I’m turning it into an 8 mile trail run

Hi Fox, that's great that you're able to do that.

could you bike the road?

Hi June, you're not supposed to since a lot of that Refuge is a wilderness area, and no bikes are allowed. You can only have vehicles on the main roads, and the road out to the peak isn't one of them. I thought about it though, but the road walk actually seemed to go by pretty fast and wasn't bad.
