In January of this year I read Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air which documents the tragedy on Mount Everest in May, 1996. Krakauer happened to be part of a doomed expedition and recorded the disaster, wherein eight climbers died on the mountain over the span of 24 hours, in excruciating detail. I realize now that seeking out mountaineering challenges in the wake of that reading is probably a strange reaction, but most of the book is not about the tragedy itself, but the context and lead-up to it. A good chunk of Into Thin Air investigates why people become obsessed with mountain climbing. For many, including Krakauer, it’s about achievement in a very pure and physical sense. You either get the summit or you don’t. That stark line between success and failure, and the terrible beauty of big, deadly mountains have an allure that I cannot deny.
I’m not going to pretend that this expedition was anything akin to the rigor or peril of something like Everest, but it was my first, proper mountaineering expedition, and fraught with many of the same dangers one finds in any significant alpine endeavor. Nearly half of our party of twelve clients did not summit for one reason or another, though everyone returned to the trailhead safely.
I set out on this adventure with my dad and my flight-instructor-turned-great-friend, Jason.

Thanks for your great video. I did this climb with JHMG end of July 2016 with my 18 yo son for his High School graduation present. He's a huge climber and was stoked. Ours was a 3 day climb. Day 1 to high camp. Day 2 to learn how to multi pitch and summit disappointment peak. Day 3 to summit the Grand, day 4 down. Unfortunately, on our 2nd day we heard lots of rescue helicopters and our guide TJ said that's never a good sound. We woke at 3am for our alpine start, that's when the guides told us one of Exum's guide was killed the day before right where you made your long rappel. He forgot to clip in and a rope started going over the ledge, he reached to get it and went over with it. The Grand was closed to climbing, so all we could do was either go down, or summit The Enclosure, which is just west of where you started your first tricky sections. I'm sad we never got to make it but your excellent video showed me what I missed. I'm sure my son will someday, but now 7 years later and 66, it would take a LOT of training living at altitude to do it.

That sounds brutal! I'm very sorry to hear that this was your experience. The mountains definitely have teeth. I hope you do get a chance to go up again!

I summited the Grand for the first time with a climber friend, 11 weeks after breaking my femur in a ski mountaineering accident. Definitely made for a memorable experience! The Tetons are amazing. 👍🏔️

Nice work climbing the Grand, it was always on my list to do but I never made it there. Dont worry too much about the cam "walking" into the crack.... that does happen at times. Great video capture!!!!

Senza credermi quindi. In quei giorni ero in forma. Mi spettava ľHalf dome e il Capitan nelle settimane successive.
