Climbing Mauna Kea the tallest peak of Hawaii was on my list for a long time. This was my first trip after this pandemic situation. The short 5-day vacation turned out great!
We visited some friends on Big Island with my wife, hiked some beautiful trails, and hiked some trails in the just reopened Volcano National Park with basically nobody around. But one day was just put aside for me to be able to climb up to the Mauna Kea Summit from the visitor center to the actual peak.
The climb starts at 9200ft high at the Humu'ula trailhead and ends at 13803ft high at the peak of Mauna Kea.
We had a great time on the mountain and reaching the Mauna Kea Summit was a very powerful moment of the day.
As always, we approached these high peaks in Hawaii with respect, knowing all the cultural significance behind them.
I hope you guys will enjoy the video!
Mahalo

As a native Hawaiian born and bred on Moku O Keawe, did not appreciate seeing you drinking beer at Lake Waiau. It is a very sacred place and deserves much more respect than you showed. 😒

Now looking back to this video, I agree with you. I didn’t do it to be disrispectful, but my friends thought it would be nice to have a Mauna Kea beer on Mauna Kea…I guess it wasn’t the best idea. We didn’t want to disrespect the mountain and I wouldn’t do it again.

Wow!! Seems like it would be a brutal hike for someone not in great cardio condition. I noticed the landscape, trail, rocks, is similar to Haleakala Crater

@@HungaroExplorer Yes it is! Must be an incredible experience to camp up there! When I was on Big Island I only had one day to do it and no 4x4 😂 Apparently the road is not that easy like the one up to Mauna Kea and to walk everything in one day is quite ambitious I think. Do you know how to get access to the cabin?
@HungaroExplorer
@HungaroExplorer 4 года назад
There are different ways to do it. You can do it thw harder way which Ainapo trail, but you can spend a night in Ainapo Cabin. Or you can approach it the more popular way spending a night in Red Hill cabin and then make it to the top and spend a night in Mauna Loa Cabin. There are definitly options.

Awesome hiking video!!!! I skied it in the early 1990's. We took a jeep up. Snow was junk and lots of rocks, so we used junk skis. Was horrible skiing, but had to do it so I could say I DID! Used to have a T shirt that said "Ski Hawaii" :-)

Hiked to the top inJuly 1958 and there were no telescopes or road. I was part of a group of explorer scouts from Oahu working on the Big Island with the Department of Fish and Game helping out with projects. I remember the last 500 or so feet were brutal. There was a notebook in a jar for us to sign. Wonder if it still exists.

Wow! That had to be such an amazing experience! Those times were the real mountain climbing days. Mauna Kea is still has it’s charm, but it would be even more exciting without constructions and road to the too.

Awesome , so I could drive to visitor center w just a regular compact car and start hiking all the way up to the summit, wonder how long does it take round trip? I see you guys returned to visitor center by car right ? Please advise if you think it would be way too much to hike up and down to visitor center ?
@HungaroExplorer
@HungaroExplorer 3 года назад
Thanks Sebastian! Yes, we did return by car because we were not properly acclimated. My friend said he rather take the car down then walk back, so I was fine with that. Took us 5h to get up, probably way less to go back down. If you have are acclimated I am sure the whole hike can be a faster roundtrip. Hope that helps!

@@HungaroExplorer Great video! I'm curious...how did you take a car down? Did a friend drive up to the telescopes while you were hiking? Also, is the road from the visitor center to the top a 4x4 dirt road or is it paved all the way up. I thought it was dirt...? Thanks!
@HungaroExplorer
@HungaroExplorer 2 года назад
Thank You Cristopher! Yes, we had our wife’s picking us up. We didn’t want to rush up and down, so this way we could enjoy the hike more. The 4x4 road is not paved, and the ranger will check your cars 4x4 capability, will cehck and make sure you know how to drive it, otherwise will not let you drive up. I would of prefer the way down by foot if you ask me.

I came from O'ahu bringing the energy from the Ko'olau Mountains up to the sacred peak of Mauna Kea. I hiked up, I showed respect to the mountain and left. I kept it short and respectful.
@mrterkla
@mrterkla 3 месяца назад
@@HungaroExplorer You are still being disrespectful, I know for a fact the rangers at check in speak about being respectful and not going to the top. There is also a large sign before the true summit that asks non-native Hawaiians be respectful. Both of these you conveniently ommitted from your video. This is some real colonizer behavior dude it's really shameful and it was very selfish and disrespectful behavior on your part. Watch out karma can sneak up on you when you least expect it.
