We are finally crossing it off the list; Ryan is climbing all the way through one of the 16in gun barrels.
Editor's Note - please don't try this in our parking lot or anywhere else that these barrels can be found, if you get stuck, it will be very hard to get you back out.
Please consider supporting the museum with a donation:

Thanks for giving me a look at what my uncle tried to convey in words. He signed up the day after Pearl Harbor and was stationed on the Texas. He then went to the Missouri, in the after turret. He said the chief picked him for "bore duty" because he was the skinniest. They did use a leather pad underneath; I don't remember him mentioning a rope though. We built large propane tanks (30,000+) and had a welder inside one grinding his welds prier to moving it into the heat treat ovens where it soaked for 3 hours at 1,000+ degrees. The welder worked up a sweat and that caused his body to swell so he could no longer fit through a 16" manhole. He had to strip to his skivvies, pour oil over himself and then we pulled him out of the manhole. He was a bit bigger than Ryan to start with. We could have let him cool off naturally in the tank but it had to go into the furnace pretty quickly to stay on schedule. He was very glad to get out of there !

Mate , I felt claustrophobic just watching that effort. I do confined space work and we never go into an smaller than 24 inches it’s way to dangerous. Great effort.

Was actually more fun to watch then I thought it would be! Also: next time use a small RC car with makeshift wipers, that should take care of the dust. On the fifth run the swipers should have some gun oil with them. :-)

Ummm.... yeah.... This would be a big "Oh, Hell No!" from me. I couldn't muster the courage to crawl through a barrel like that if it were just five feet long, let alone one that is 68!!! I have forwarded this video to many different people, including Dave at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. You, Ryan, constantly set the bar for museum directors and curators. I hope we cross paths soon!

Does the Navy still have live shells and powder stored somewhere just in case the ships were re-activated. Yes, I know it will probably never happen. Just curious.

I have another few questions. 1. What is the history of crawling through a 16 inch gun? 2. Was it always just a feat of manliness, or was this used as a means of inspection or maintenance and or repair? 3. Is it really just 16 inches wide inside the barrel? 4. Are you the 1st or the 21st person to do this? In other words, how common was this done in the service on battleships? ( No disrespect intended. I knew the 8th man to walk on the moon. While he wasn't the first, it is still amazing what he got to do.) 3. What inspired you to do this? Thanks! Ya done good Gunga Din!

Sailors crawled through the gun to help with maintenance work on them. It is slightly more than 16in in the barrel, but not a lot. I couldn't tell you how many people have done it, quite a few. However, most that did it before did it when the barrels were depressed which made the crawl through slightly easier. We do have pictures though of someone doing a promotion ceremony from inside of the barrel (one person in each barrel) though I doubt they crawled through it at that moment, they look very clean. But there was a fair amount of horsing around like what Ryan did. We do not believe anyone has done it since these ships were decommissioned in the 90's but we are waiting for someone to tell us otherwise.

VIDEO SUGGESTION: HOW is the 16" barrel rifling liner changed? I believe the barrel has to be heated to make it expande so the loose liner can be slipped out and the new one slipped back in. There MUST be archive footage of this somewhere.
