The clinchers vs. tubulars debate is long running. Which tyres should you choose?

Clincher tyres are the standard; they're almost certainly what you had on your bike when you first got it. Tubular tyres are the pro racers standard; they need to be glued to your wheels, which takes a bit of expertise, but the pros had steadfastly refused to move away from them, even though excellent clincher tyres and wheels are now available. And, now there's a third option, tubeless clincher tyres. These have been used in mountain biking for years now, but have proved more difficult to adapt to the road and are yet to really gain much traction in the pro peloton, although they do offer lots of grip.

Back when I was racing much more actively (amateur level, Cat3) I used to run tubular Zipp 404s for racing, along with a Fir carbon rear disc wheel for TTs, (and I would mount the tires using the Tufo tape method, which worked like a charm and was miles easier to mount with so much less muss and fuss. However, I did read that in some rolling resistance tests, the Tufo tape did add a small amount of additional rolling resistance ( due to increased hysteresis) vs the traditional glue-brushed-on-rim method. In the front, however, I did run a Hed3 tri-spoke clincher with a latex tube (which has been shown to add materially less rolling resistance with latex tubes over butyl tubes, but the pressure does need to be topped up daily or even more frequently for rides lasting >6hrs. I never got involved with tubeless, as it was relatively new technology back when I was racing avidly (2003-2010), so perhaps that might offer even less rolling resistance given that there's no frictional losses between the inner tube and outer tire carcass. Maybe this is something the boys here on GCN might want to look at in a more scientific fashion, perhaps some sort of controlled roll-down test. Well that's my $0.02. Hope some might find it helpful.

I love my TLR Tubeless Trek Wheels and Tires. I commute to work through major industrial zones, downtown city streets and also ride centuries on the paved roads of SoCal mountain ranges. In over 2,000 miles, I have never had an issue and they offer great 'road feel.'

I tried Tufo tubular clinchers. Basicly tubulars that fit on clincher rims. Very hard to put mount on rims, but work very well. I found them very durable, liked their ride but only in 25 is the widest.

Tubeless are awesome in the city because you can run a soft, grippy tire without worrying about punctures. You can't run a decent performance clincher otherwise because they flat too often (too much crap on the road) I started out on Conti GP 4000s 25mm a few years back but switched to gatorskins after about a month because I would get a flat at least twice a week. Gatorskins never punctured but were like ice skates in the wet. Recently switched to tubeless zipp tangentes at 25mm and they give you the best of both worlds. Love them.

In 2020 I ride 25mm GP5000 TL and i absolutely love it feels great is absolutely fast even with lower pressures no need to worry about Bad Roads anymore

for me, its a set of Conti Competition tubs for racing. What GCN forgot to mention in the almost linear-like cornering feel you get from tubs as compared to clinchers due to their round profile.

Or you can always run tubs with a bit of sealant in to help with puncture resistance. it doesn't add much weight...

The world of road biking never ceases to amaze me. Because I am a mountain biker and the most common opinion for a mountain biker is "get a cheap roadie for road rides". A lot of mountain bikers are under the impression that the only difference in price for road bikes is weight after about 600 dollars..

Peloton magazine did a manufacturer survey 2 yrs ago, only addressed to product developers and engineers (no sales/marketing people), focused on tech questions, one of which was about what their preference was...the majority said clinchers! The reasons mentioned was that clincher wheel and tyre tech has developed big over the past 5-10 yrs, while that of tubs has remained static, to the point where the clincher wheels and tyres now replicate tub road feel, plus being a lot more practical. I have been using Veloflex tyres (25mm) the past year and do have the same feel as tubs. In addition I prefer having a little extra weight at the wheels, adding stability and lower centre-of-gravity, which I find helps when racing kermis/crits!

I have been riding racing bikes for over 40 years & I knew riders who were brought up on tubs as there was nothing else & had moved over to clinchers for convenience & cost. It has always been clinchers for me & it is so easy to carry a spare inner tube & a set of levers in a jersey pocket with a pump on my frame. Not that I ever puncture, once in a bad year & a tire right off every 20!

my local bike shop is selling 29er inner tubes super cheap and when I asked why, I was surprised to hear that they were converting most bikes to tubeless, in-house.

The bike is solid, nothing sound on it even though I did not fine tune it just put it together, well pack and easy to put together. It's fast and I feel the gear ratio is perfect, share4.photo/RoadBike?Cの I live in Florida everything is flat here so it's perfect, even when I'm climbing it feels nice and light. Brakes are good too, everything feels of good quality till you get to the pedals. In fact the treat in one of them was almost bad I had a hard time to install it. Saddle I ok as well, after 20-25 miles it hurst without bicycle shorts with bike shorts it's not so bad.

I used tubular tires for about 3 years many years ago. I had no end of trouble with them. At first I thought it was defective output dumped on the US. In the past year with the comments about using high tire pressures, I've reconsidered. Maybe the problem was the perforated base tape and seam failures I had came from pumping these tires (Clement Criterium and Campionato del Mondo, both silk) up too much. Consequently, I'm more than a bit skeptical about the tire pressures mentioned in this video unless the durability of tubulars has substantially improved. For me, open tubulars like those sold by Compass offer excellent performance without the hassles of tubulars so that I rely on these for my most important rides.

I am restoring a Gio's Torino professional and running tubulars again for the first time in many years. I actually forgot what a pain in the ass they are to mount! I miss the old Silk tubulars from Clemente and Hutchinson because they were really well-made and weren't that difficult to mount when you got the tricks down. However, I am now finding them a bit of a pain in the butt. The cheap Victoria's don't Mount very good of course. And just for the record, I've been doing serious cycling since 1964. Entered my first racing in 1965.

Give the Panaracer Gravelkings a run before dismissing tubeless tires. They are the bomb! And the GravelKing SK adds a hell of a lot of grip for very little rolling resistance. Supple, fast rolling and puncture resistant goodness on both!

Mine: me -> 150lbs, Vittoria Diamante Pro 25mm clinchers + Vreedestein latex tubes = >3,000 mi/yr with zero flats. Fantastic ride feels very similar to the tubulars I've tried. My cousin (225lbs) used to get a flat just about 9 out of 10 rides he did (2-3/week), then he switched from butyl to latex tubes and manages to routinely go at least 3 months without flatting. The formula is simple: latex + high thread count tires (>= 220 tpi) yields a much more compliant ride than the mass-market 160 tpi tires + butyl rides. Interestingly, one of the most experienced riders in my local club tried latex and hated it because "the ride was too grabby and lively." LOL Also: Without a doubt, and average route speed comparo's over the same route have proven it every single time, I log much faster speeds when I pump up my tires to 115lbs than when I pump to 95lbs. As a side note, I positively hate the feel of Conti Gatorbacks & 4-Seasons, they just feel wooden, dead, disconnected. I am lucky that I am light enough to get high miles on my tires, but even if I didn't, I still would probably speed my hard earned $$ on better tires rather than another faddish jersey or cutesie socks.

I recently purchased a 2008 Cervelo SLC-SL carbon road bike with Reynolds Aero Carbon wheels and tubular tires, which are an upgrade from the original clincher tire Dura Ace wheelset.

I prefer clincher rims; more cost effective in the long run, and easier maintenance. You can also vary your tire widths if need be vs. the glued on tires; it is a lot more hassle; a person is stuck remaining with one specific tire width.

Years ago I ran tubeless using my clinchers, on Mavic Ksyrium ES wheels, needing no rim tape. The setup was straight forward. At the time there were no “tubeless” specific tires. I went back to tubes the last few years, but now there’s tubeless specific tires. I’ve seen the only difference seems to be the bead, but are there really any other differences in the tires AND any reason I SHOULDN’T use a clincher (I like Schwalbe Ones) to run tubeless?

Even Tony Martin has been using clincher tires on his time trial bike due to lower rolling resistance. Two plys - the tire and the tube sliding on each other must be faster in a straight line. On my MTB, I am going back to tubed clinchers - the casing of the tires are thinner and with enough talcum powder between the tube and tire, you get a very supple ride, more supple than a tubeless. I got tired of my tubeless tires constantly drying up inside the tire, having to add more sealant or scrape out the dried sealant (weight) from the tubeless tire. Not to mention the thicker casing of a tubeless tire (sometimes) being so thick making the ride rougher for the same tire pressure of a tubed tire. Tubeless tires also cost a lot more at least for MTB, especially if you want light ones.

Good thinking. I have not flatted even on crappy Front Range rockfest trails in over three years, despite running about 17 lb. in 2.6" x 26" tires. Talcum/baby powder might be part of the secret to keep the tube sliding and not binding against the rim and outer tire, or perhaps the thicker outers now made to run tubeless might help too.

My new bike came with tubeless, which I was initially skeptical of, but having done a few rides, I’m now in love with them! I am however, unsure of whether the increased comfort comes from the 28c width (used to run 25c tubes), lack of inner tube or lower pressure?! I am also dreading a puncture because I simply don’t want to buy another damn product which rarely gets used - a habit I’m sure we’re all accustomed too!

I recently went back from tubeless to clinchers. I was fed up with the mess on my frame when you do puncture. If this dries up you'll a well hard time scraping it off. Anyway, I went back to butyl innertubes and kept the pressure the same. It sure does make a large difference... Even though the pressure was equal the butyl innertube made it feel like 20-30 PSI more/harsher. I ordered some latex tubes to see if that helps.

I use tubs on my retro lo pro tt bike 650/700c 19mm front and 23 rear. I love feel but wouldn't want to use them to commute on to work on because of practical and comfort reasons, on my commuter set ups, fixie or geared I prefer to run 28mm clinchers, easy to fix and comfortable

I ride a gravel bike with 35c tires with tubes and never have any problems. I prefer running higher to max pressures in my tires, and have never found the need or desire for lower PSI on a road bike application. However I do feel very different when it comes to my 29er MTB.

It would have been nice if you'd added the Tufo tubular-clincher tires into the mix. I've been riding the Tufo Elite 25mm tubular-clincher for over a decade and they feel much better than traditional clinchers.

So there are other videos showing how carbon clinchers can heat up so much (mainly decents) that the resin changes shape and rim is trashed. True or not true for carbon clinchers?

I started using tubeless tires, IRC Pro Light. I am never going back Clincher. Seriously, I can feel the responsiveness. Funny thing is, I never carry a flat tire tools anymore.

If I want to change from Aluminium Wheel to Carbon fibre ones, do I have to have a specific size? Or is it all the same for all the Road bikes so long as the wheels can reach the break callipers?

Tubs everyday for me (except the depths of winter)! I ride Vittoria Corsa SC at the moment and agree with Matt that on a good road they sing to you and put a smile of your face that no other type of tyre can match; life's just too short to ride anything else! I've ridden over 30,000 miles since I switched to tubs and have had only 7 or 8 punctures, all of which appart from one were quickly and easily fixed with the tube of sealant I carry in my jersey pocket. That sealant can fix up to three punctures and so is lighter and easier to carry than a couple of inner tubes. All of which makes Tubs the obvious choice for me. The only downside being the need to pump up to pressure before every ride!

+Jim Thompson I've never ridden one until it wore out completely (down to the canvas) as I've always opted to change a very worn tub before a big race or event. But I did ride a Vittoria Corsa on my rear wheel for over 3000 miles before I changed it. The one I have on the front now a probably done more and looks absolutely fine.

last rear conti sprinter lasts me 7000 miles. still riding the front . I got gatorskins on my other set, and i don;t think they'll last that long

Am I right in saying that for a Road Tubeless set-up you definitely need tubeless specific rims and tyres, but for a Cyclocross tubeless set-up you can use normal clincher rims and tyres because of the lower pressures involved?

So what would you say is a top quality clincher tyre? Used to use conti gp4000s but I know a lot of people (including myself) who have a side wall blow out recently and have lost confidence. Switched to conti 4 season for training tyre and 27mm Vittoria Open Pave on the winter bike. Currently looking for a pair of carbon runs and was going to run with latex tubes and clinchers. Any thoughts on brand/model of tyre to use? (Wheels will be used mainly for racing and chaingangs). Thanks!

Carbon Tubs are also used because they don't warp or pop the inner tubes when you are heavily breaking on a descent. Carbon wheels are not designed to be clincher. This obviously isn't a problem if you have disc brakes.

Give an open tubular in a 25mm size a try. I think you will all notice the difference vs a std clincher.

Would Si recommend keeping a tubeless ready wheel set until there are enough options available and just ride/race clinchers? No need selling them just yet? Also can you guys do a video on training vs racing wheel sets comparing spoke counts, tyre types and other sciency things? :)

Soo ,can you convert any wheel and tyre to a tubeles tyre ? If you go tubeless ,are you more prone to have a explosion when you hit a curb ? How often would that liquid need to be changed ? Would longer period of inactivity make that liquid harden and unbalance the wheel ? I'm not a troll ,i just recently updated from a cheap simple bike that was priceless for me (5 years of joy ,aside from some oil and a flat tire ,perfect little promax bike) , to a better bike (nishiki pro sl) ,and i got hooked on bikes again even ditched my car for 3 days .

on a mountain bike you can put any tyre on tubeless whether it's tubeless pacific or not, can't you do that with road tyres? I'm getting a spesh diverge with 30-32mm tyres and would like to take the tubes out

I don't like tubeless as much as I like tubulars. But they are scarce and expensive were I live (Costa Rica). I gave a try to tubeless both in my MTB and Road Bike, at this moment the only tubeless left is the rear MTB tire. To me is a mess and need to be topping the sealant every few months is not the best thing. As I carried a preglued tubular as a spare there is also the need to carry a tube when riding on tubeless. And still the ride on tubulars is the best.

You mentioned that tires roll better with slightly less pressure. What would be the ideal pressure for 25mm clinchers? I though about going for 115 psi (8 bar) for a race soon. I weight 75kg. Is that too high?

A couple of things not discussed. On long descents in warm weather on carbon wheels - clinches are considered dangerous, as the thinner wall my fail when compared to tubulars. Considering pros race on some of the highest mountain descents in the middle of the summer months, I imagine this may be a consideration. The other thing is the finding that tubeless actually has the best rolling resistance and clincher better than tubs - so maybe the weight penalty is neutralised by this.

Unless you have a follow-car with spare wheels in it, it's normal clinchers all day. Get good quality ones, throw in some proper tubes, inflate to a pressure appropriate to the size of your backside and the roads you are riding, and you are good to go. Tubeless are an epic, messy hassle that are not worth the 1-2 flats a season you might otherwise get. The "performance advantage" of tubulars might matter to less one tenth of 1% of anybody who turns a crank-- and they will definitely have a follow-car and someone else to handle the gluing, etc.

So ... Simon had some difficulty with Schwalbe's One tubeless, and then switched to a different brand and was more impressed (with the ride and install). Which brand?. Which model? I would guess Hutchinson, maybe fusions?

Good review, I like tubs for racing, train on clinchers (I hate that name, used to call them high pressures, then wired ons). Is that countryside around the Wye Valley ?

*Incoming mountain biker* The idea of tubeless is to run lower pressures, maintaining more grip, and eliminating pinch flats. For all tyres, this can be a great thing, as long as you're not obsessed with the idea of rolling resistance. Softer tyres, will yield more grip, it's science.
