The reason why I'm on this channel is..... I do commercial HVAC and today I had to do a analysis on hvac equipment at a closed down nail salon They left behind racks upon racks of really cool bottles of nail polish. I grabbed em all. I never ever shot a car model with nail Polish. So,Dr.Crankys gonna teach me how.
I don't know if I stated this in an earlier post, but alot of nail polish is urethane acrylic. So one way to tell which is which,is to read the label. Probably need a magnifying glass to read it. Another is to buy one extra bottle and use a little in one thinner or the other. If it is the wrong thinner it will not mix right. It only takes a few drops to tell
I really think you're one of the brilliant creative minds in the model building game(no disrespect to any of the other builders here) by any means. I happen to think each and every builder has his/her own creativeness to share with not only us as builders but with the entire world. The tips and advice given by you all is spread world-wide. Keep up the great work builders and thanx!!!!!!
I've always wondered about the nail polish and how it would spray. there is some really nice colors with that stuff and now I must try it out. thanks for the information
OMG! I'm so excited, I gotta go get some nail polish on the way home from work now, I'm out of eye liner anyway! lol That paint looks beautiful! I watched a video as I mentioned and they used urethane reducer, I am happy to see that once again the cheap cold lacquer come into play. Ok, fire up the airbrush, I can't wait. Paint, paint, paint! lol

Ahh makes sense. This video was really great thanks again. It's one thing to read about it, but to see it happen really makes a difference for me. Damn that blue looks pretty! Seeya on the tubes, hope the sun shines soon! -dp
Hello my friend and truly love this demonstration it has helped me a lot as the others have done and as I told the others guys I will also give you this information by all means get yourself a bottle of AK stainless steel Shaker BB's you will love them because they are great for mixing the paint before spraying I put them in all my little bottles of paint that I have stored it will be using again and get yourself a hand dryer a hand hair dryer this will quickly dry the paint on all your models you will love it
I think that's awesome. Thank you very much! Had I done that, my bench and clothes would have been blue by the 3 minute mark. Thanks DC. ...also this is a great way to get your wife a bit involved in a build. She can go buy the color.
hey dr cranky. just did a few tests with nail polish. liked the way the parts came out . wal-mart family dollar and dollar tree are great for cheap nail polish. you can thin the nail gloss with lacquer it brings out a deep shine.and the little plastic botles you an getg at pat catans
Great information Doc! Now is a good time to look for nail polish Christmas gift packs, they are usually pretty cheap in price, and come in a wide range of colors.
thanks it worked but I had to use like 5 coats I turned the 1987 caprice metal kit into a 1981 impala 2dr it was hell to do but it came out great, its 2 tone green at the top dark brown at the bottom I went threw hell but it was worth it no one iv'e seen on youtube has done that lol...
I loved your video Dr. CRANKY and thank you taking the time to post it. My problem is finding the bottles and funnel! I tried beaty shops, craft shops and no one seems to carry them for the general public.....any ideas where I could find these items....thank you once again doc. C.
Hey Doc, Is the Lacquer thinner that you are using medium drying? I followed this video using medium drying thinner and my finish came out grainy. It's as if the paint was drying just as it was hitting the body. I am spraying from about 2 inches away. Is that not close enough?
Hello. I tried the very same way with the Tamiya Lacquer Thinner; consistency is ok to spray but color becomes so pale and light and wont even cover a light coat. What can i use to thin it besides Lacquer thinner ?
Really love this clinic. Just got back into the hobby last year after 25 yrs or more. I have two teenage daughters who have cases of this stuff and was looking through their colors one day and thought about how to use nail polish as paint. Didn't even know modellers were using this stuff for years. You've inspired me. Many of the bottles don't say what kind of paint it is. Would you always use cheap lacquer thinner to thin these?
Does the lacquer evaporate from the bottle. You said you eyeball the viscosity. Thinner is better than thicker. You just might need more coats.I put a dual-action air brush on my Christmas list. I am going crazy for metallic paints and need some new colors.
Question regarding the plastic bottle you used... Is it any particular grade of plastic such as LDPE or HDPE? Have you ever had issues with the lacquer polish or thinner dissolving the bottle? I want to try this but am unsure if the dropper bottles I have will have an issue with the solvents. Thanks.
hi sir thank you for that on the nail stuff. can you tell who is the best at doing fuel cell for drag cars or making a street car for the drag but like to put a fuel cell in it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks gary
Racing blue nice color for scale racing cars. :P i didn't knew about this until now. hahaha thanks! now i don't have to order my paint from far away it cost to much. -.-
thanks for sharing doc!...wonderful video...i eventually wanted to try nail polish enamels and there looking like more and more of a good idea.......all i want to do is paint and its snowing in pittsburgh....lol
Thanks Doc! Great demo! How does it clean up? Can u use regular airbrush thinner or cleaning solution (or water?) to purge it out of the airbrush? Or do u need to use something else?
Not sure if anybody has menioned it before but CVS pharmacy is having a sale on nailpolish, went today with my wife and grabbed some nice colors to try on a model im building (paid about 1.50 for the same mysterious blue). Anyway i think its a good chance to grab a few bottles and try them.
Hey doc. I mixed some blue nail polish with some paint thinner and it took a min and turned into a ball of goo ! What do u think went wrong ! ? I need some help ! Never done this before ! Dam. So sad ! Lol. It seems so easy with u doing it ! Really enjoy your videos
Tell me what thinner you used with the nail polish. Remember that not everything out there is compatible. I like to use cheap cold lacquer from Ace Hardware or HDepot.
Have you seen "Mineral Fusion" nail polish? It's on Amazon for $5.99 a bottle, but they have some really nice metallic colors: "Pretty Penny", "Tahitian Pearl", "Galaxy", "Brownstone", etc. Looks like something you might want to check out. Very elegant colors, would look good on a really classy type model, like an old Rolls Royce or something.
I doubt you'll read my comment, but do you do commissions? Like I have a specific color nail paint and want to use it on a miniature I have too, but not sure on how to thin it down like you did. Its very simple to do from what I can see, but I'm stuck on the thinning the nail paint. So I figured I'd commission you if you accept commissions.
Unfortunately, I do not handle commissions, sorry. But I can tell you that mixing and thinning nail polish is easy. Begin with a 1:1 mixing ration, and then use an eye dropper to put more thinner into the mix if you need it. The best consistency is the one that flows through a normal airbrush at around 35-45 PSI. Trial and error and practice on a scrap piece of plastic. Plastic spoons is what I use. Give it a try.
Nail Polish is Acrylic Lacquer same as Tamiya TS Spray Cans which I've used through my Airbrush no drama's. I was only the other day walking past Nail Polish thinking whats the difference and thats what brought me here.
you have me interested with using nail polish but what type of Thinner is best to buy I live in the UK so I don't want to buy the wrong thinner any help would be grateful
