I do a variety of sharpening and just getting into clipper blade maintenance. Your video is an outstanding lesson for me. Your thoroughness from start to finish was practical and understandable. I liked your sense of caution about not overdoing the grinding and always inspect as you go. Also keeping track of the heat build up that can cause warping of the blade. Thank you

I'm a retired barber after 30 years in the business. I miss being behind the chair but its hard for me to stand so much. I'm seriously considering sharpening shears and clipper blades as a part time retirement job. I am surprised at the cost of the proper machinery to do sharpening correctly! I do know that every time a sharpener came around it seemed to be a crap shoot as to whether or not they would do a good job. I hope to gain the skills and knowledge and equipment to always do a great job. I know first-hand how important sharp shears and blades are to the people behind the chairs.

Always enjoy your videos Jim. Great job showing the steps to blade sharpening especially some of the often missed details such as demagnetizing and deburring. I find that often those steps are skipped in an effort to save time. But they give up quality (consistent quality) for quantity. And especially making sure that the spring is adjusted properly and not wobbly on the cutter. Many sharpeners, both new and experienced, I've trained or met over the years had no Idea to do this and as a result, had problems with their blades not cutting well or cutting better or worse on one side than the other. Keep spreading your knowledge and insights. It's helping to advance our industry to new levels!

Great & thorough job explaining the How To’s for A5 format clipper blade resurfacing. Also, nice of you to share cost saving tips for accessories used, as well as mention of equipment you like & use; and maybe even alternatives to such! Lastly, noting differences between working out of the shop vs your van & what each entails (if any), & why. Anyone following you & your methods can’t help but to succeed! Appreciative of you & your sponsors for enhancing everyone’s experience; which can only help our industry serve a higher quality of service more consistently!

Great video! I've had blades like this come in after a customer tried to sharpen them on a stone or something. I usually turn them away and tell them they are no good. Then they know not to try to sharpening them in the future. I have a great tip for straightening out the spring. Remove the socket and set the spring on a flat surface. push the top of the spring down on the surface. On the loop ends (where the hole's are) one will be lifted off the table, bend accordingly until both side are contacting the surface when pressing the top of the spring to the surface...hope that makes sense. :o)

The grit that’s on the aluminum plate is what does the sharpening, but the plate also needs to be tapered to create a hollow grind.

It is tapered to hollow grind the blade. That means it’s slightly higher in the middle than on the outside of the plate.

What would cause that oval shape and tooth damage? Touching tips down first on the plate? Too much forward pressure? Is it something that could have occurred during use, like from cutting a dirty dog? I pulled a lot of little tips from this vid, much appreciated!
@JimSharpBlog
@JimSharpBlog 2 года назад
Hi Matt…The tip damage is most likely either from a roll upwards as the cutter was lifted off the plate or the tips hit first on set down. The oval was actually the new edge working itself in because the blade was sharpened flat. Actually it was sharpened flat with an outward negative flare on the outer edges, which makes me think it was sharpened on a flat hone instead of a clipper blade sharpener.
