I used to think modern players were more skilled offensively, less skilled defensively, but I have since thrashed that opinion. Why ? Old players outside of the 3 point shot were just as skilled, it's just that they either played in slower pace/more defensive eras with stricter offensive rules and they also couldn't take 4 steps, flop, avoid mind games, avoid getting punished...etc. like modern players. But I also have to give more credit towards modern defensive players, the rules are absolutely AGAINST them, they can't handcheck, they gotta deal with all the carrying and ignored rules that ignore basketball logic completely, they have to space to 3 point land...etc. Full respect to guys like Jrue Holiday, Marcus Smart, Giannis Antetokounmpo..etc. for keeping defense alive in a era where it's tough to play defense.

most of the travels he shows are not violations because they're not carrying the ball as their hands are on top of the ball or on its side, meaning they are still dribbling the ball so steps are not limited. Most of the uncalled travels in the nba go unnoticed by the fans and come on step-back moves, even with the gather step. Literally every other step-back seems to be a travel if you look closely.

thats why its crazy when people point out how older players in the 70s weren't good ball handlers. They use to make you keep your hand on top of the ball when dribbling, even the side of the ball would be called palming. It is so much harder to change direction with speed if you dribble like that!

You can take as many steps as you want while dribbling. The ball isn’t considered gathered until it stops moving(spinning in hand), and most of the carries the hands were to the side of the ball not necessarily under the ball

Nah a lot of these were pretty bad and would've definitely been called travel or carry in the 90s. The rules have definitely been loosened. This is one of the reasons why basketball in the 50s sucked tbh. The rules were too strict. People were taught to only put the hand on top of the ball (not even the side) so this is why the dribbling looked so primitive and many players only dribbled with one hand. Switching hands was too risky because it's hard to switch hands when you can't put your hand on the side. Bob Cousy was similar to AI in a way because he used to do a behind the back dribble that's very common nowadays but back then people said he was getting away with a palming violation (a carry nowadays).

i did like the overall point of this video thay Jxmy made but some of the examples are kinda questionable. It sorta feels like he thinks most hesitations are travels, like the Jordan Poole on Clarkson clip he counted steps but like, he’s doing a hesi, that’s a live dribble still. steps only count once you gather the ball. if you want to argue he carried (which i don’t think he did bc i always saw a carry is when you palms are facing upwards for the most part) then fine, i’d disagree but fine. still like the video concept though

They do need to do something about it tbh. Just cuz they score more doesn't mean the product is better. When you allow lawlessness like this it ruins the purity of the sport that made me fall in love with the sport because of the Kobes and Tim Duncans etc. I don't partake in any of the BS "X player would be better/worse in X era" stuff but I don't know how people watch mfs just walk around the court chucking up threes and not playing defense and say its better than previous eras.

@@Ues2DC Nah I hear what Clique is saying but he's also very young and I think with time he'll realize that the flashy highlights don't matter when guys quite literally can't play defense. Its all a marketing ploy and Clique is literally the prime target audience for the NBA
@Cawby
@Cawby Год назад
@@timlett99 Definitely agree. The thing I'll add is that it also takes the excitement out of the game for me. It was exciting watching great players trying to put up big numbers against great defense, or failing to do so because the defense contained them. All these rule changes since when I watched in my younger years have removed that aspect of the game. And I don't fault the players at all for it, they play to the rules they're given as always, I just don't understand why the NBA decided to ruin it's product.

Only two of those were even travels. Although, pretty much all of them were carrying (though it could be ambiguous as most of them were holding the ball on the side and it is only a carry if the ball stops moving in their hand).
