My old grandad, he was born in the late 1800, he worked in his own woods in the winter pulling lumber with horses, it is easier when its snow. He never wore gloves. And the Scandinavian winters are cold. Maybe it comes with adjusting to it, being out in the cold makes you notice it less. But it comes and bites you in the behind when you get old with all sorts of ailments in the bones and joints.

Important safety tip: don't ride in a cloak or cape with only a single closure at the neck, as many "costume" type cloaks have. If the cloak slips to one side while you're horseback, and your horse proceeds to step on it, you can easily get choked. (Don't ask how I know this...) Also, I didn't sit on my cloak, as this rider did, but allowed it to drape over the cantle of my saddle and my horse's quarters like an English hunt-field "rump rug". Amazing how it trapped the horse's body heat and kept both of us warm. Big kudos to you for patiently taking training opportunities with your young horse in the field!

I really like Talos. Such a playful boy, he really has a mind of his own. Looking forward to seeing more of you two. I remember that the Australian rain coat I used had some ties around the shins. Nothing fancy, you just tied a knot and your legs were better protected from the weather. This also prevented the long coat ends from flapping around. Maybe in the middle ages they had something similar?

My colt attempted to kill one of our goat kids. My parents were pretty upset with him. He had got the kid down and was pawing him. He broke the kid's femur and jaw. Thankfully the kid survived and is doing ok now. Our dog helped correct my colt later since he was inclined to go after more sheep and goats once he learned that he could dominate them. The colt is a gelding, but he was in the terrible twos at the time.

I just found these videos today and I love them! As a rider myself for many years, I found that in winter simply being astride a horse will keep you quite warm, because their body heat rises. We had a big Friesian a while back and he was an absolute furnace. He'd kick off so much heat that even on the coldest day, I had to take off my coat and sometimes even my sweater! I'd completely forget about the weather until I dismounted, then be like OMG brrrr when did it get so freezing cold?! lol

Great vid. Talos made me laugh when he bit your cloak. From what I've read in historical books, winter travel was avoided unless absolutely necessary such as answering summons from the king. As to the glove issue, I think you're right the rider would have wrapped up in the cloak. Those riding in a wagon or carriage would have worn gloves since they didnt have to hold reins. Loved seeing Talos do the Spanish walk.

First, you need to have some ties for your cloak. Second, keep your mantel or hood up over your head. Fur hats must have been a thing. Third, give me your palm and hand length size and I will spin and knit or felt or sew some fingerless mitts at least. A bit of leather in the palm would be good for reins. In real cold weather shearling mitts would offer wind protection. Hides and skins best for wind protection. Would be happy to collaborate. As a master handspinner.

From my experiences with cloaks, especially the long travel cloaks, I would assume it possible they just grabbed them with both hands, thus holding them in place and keeping their hands warm at the same time. If you get used to it it's quite impressive how much can be done with the hands while having a cloak wrapped around them.

If you work outside enough in the cold; especially, when you hold something metal like I often do, than your hands just adjust to the cold over the years. I been saving up for a year and a bit and finally I can start horse-riding lessons! You have a really cool job and I hope one-day I can be travelling like a medieval knight on horseback. I have had two already and I love it, hopefully I can hack out in the countryside soon. Its quite frustrating when my legs don't seem to stay in the correct positions but I'm sure it will be okay in time and then I can start to canter! Your videos are so cool and are what I often dream on being able to do. I don't seem to know many other kids that have the same interests though .

Keep on saving money and striving for your dream. When I was a child, I saved up $80 and bought my first horse. I didn't have lessons or any friends to ride with, but kept on learning and trying. I eventually became a professional at both competing and training in my area of horsemanship. So keep working, dreams do come true!

A bit later gloves become a mark of nobility - they mean one doesn't have to work with one's hands. That's why in the Renaissance nobles in portraits if they're not wearing gloves - they're holding them, or they have them somewhere nearby. Dumas and Rostand even use gloves as plot points on various occasions in pieces set in the early 17th century. Not yet true in the Middle Ages then?
@ModernKnight
@ModernKnight 5 лет назад
Not sure about that in the Middle Ages. Hawking gauntlets were a thing when riding, but to protect against the hawk’s talons obviously. I’ve just not seen any evidence of riding gloves in this period. Who knows?
@lauravivanco
@lauravivanco 4 года назад
@@ModernKnight I've found an article (on JSTOR) which describes the gloves in this image (Piers Plowman, Bodleian MS Douce 104) as riding-gloves: "The figure on folio 19r could be Reason, but the riding-gloves would be just as appropriate to Peace, who mentions his horse in the adjacent complaint" www.jstor.org/stable/3733913 The illustration of the allegorical person wearing the gloves can be found here. He's clearly fairly well off, but isn't riding a horse: www.luminarium.org/medlit/msdouce104f019r.jpg Via www.larsdatter.com/gloves.htm I found a photo of Henry IV's leather gloves, which actually look quite similar to the ones in the manuscript illustration: www.personal.utulsa.edu/~marc-carlson/histshoe/redfern/GLOVES/plateII.htm

6:30 Oh, he's adorable! XD He looks like a draft cross of some sort... What breed is he? Also, have you considered adding a second closure at waist height and ties about a foot to the inside of your cloak on either side? Tie them in a hitching knot around your leg just below your knee and then tuck the leading edge under your knee. It should keep the cloak a little more secure, and make it more difficult for Talos to nibble on. :)

I found that having a cloak that fastened on the shoulder, combined it’s a hood and capelet kept me warm, except for my feet! The nice thing is that your front has nice warm fabric down it. Your main arm can be free, then you ruck up the cape fabric on the other side and let it fall over the arm you aren’t using keeping it warm. If the cape spreads out over the back of the horse you can get warmth from it as well.

So thanks to you and your brilliant channel I've added a another arrow to my quiver of knowledge. PS. WHY ARE YOU NOT ON MAIN STREAM T.V.
@1stPrivateAccount
@1stPrivateAccount 5 лет назад
I amcarbonandotherbits. You don’t just measure once either. We usually fit saddles and recheck over the seasons and as their work changes. One of the biggest mistakes people make is to get a saddle fitted once and then never check again. It sits on the spine and can cause devastating changes if not regularly assessed, especially on younger horses. It’s like us and shoes in a way, our feet change over the years, especially in our younger years.
