FINALLY I'm done with it
Warning, the timestamp list is LONG, in fact so long that it is too much for the description character limitation.
So look for it in the pinned comment!
This video aims to cover (nearly) all differences (mainly audio and script) between Clock Tower GHOST HEAD and its US version, Clock Tower II: The Struggle Within.
Whether you prefer one version or the other, it's interesting to see how the localization team dealt with it.
Enjoy! I may have missed some stuff, so if you have any interesting trivia not mentioned here, feel free to share.
Also please remain polite. The comment section should not be a battlefield about which version is better or the whole translation VS localization debate.
Whew, what an adventure this ordeal was. 12h of raw footage and one month of editing later, I did not expect this to take that long.

Bates has better lines and aching than Shō. While Yū has better acting than Alyssa. Also The Struggle Within implies that Allen Hale is related to the Tates.

I never expected to see a twin sisters in Ghost Head and in Struggle Within a -one innocent sister and her alt as an hell of a psycopath brother- But seriously, i can sense about changing names in the two versions (Japan/Inter) but why i smell into Sho/Bates was like a type of mini-censorship?

I'm so confused...what exactly is the difference besides one being in Japanese and her wearing a different outfit? I was expecting some radically different game with no censorship...but they appear to be exactly the same haha. So the Japanese version was equally ridiculous in its non-intuitive gameplay, including the infamous "samurai armor" nonsense. I still, to this day, can't believe they pulled that nonsense. There was no RU-vid back in the late 90's, but there was a Gamefaqs, and it definitely warned of this. I used to rely so much on that website back in the day that it was a MUST for certain games. I wrote a few FAQS for it, which I think are still up, but who knows.

The differences in the original version compared to the US one are a different voice cast, clearer story elements, more cohesive setting, different (and slightly longer) staff roll and slightly different staff roll music. Gameplay-wise? Yeah, they're identical, except the X and O buttons are swapped like they are in many of other PS1 games (cultural reasons).

Why are the outfits different? I watched a lets play of the english version but the alyssa was wearing the same outfit as the Japanese copy
@WaddleBih
@WaddleBih 9 месяцев назад
There's a button combo you can input on the title screen that allows you to wear alternate outfits (the white school uniform and a monkey suit) . You unlock the menu that shows the inputs after getting ending A if I remember correctly but they can be used at any time. I used an alternate outfit for the US version to be able to easily tell the footage apart while editing.

So is the hallucinogen and the zombie bacteria the same stuff?
@WaddleBih
@WaddleBih 11 месяцев назад
No, they're different. The zombie bacteria (HU599/Cerebral Toxin) is only responsible for the green-skinned, yellow-blooded zombies seen in chapters 2 and 3 (and Akiyo/Ashley). Saido/Maxwell, Chinatsu/Stephanie and Masaharu/Michael (when inside the armor) are affected by the hallucinogen in the golden statue (the first two bleed red when shot, so they don't display any of the symptoms if HU599). The statue hallucinogen is also potentially responsible for every "paranormal" event seen in chapter 1, since it started affecting Yuu/Alyssa after she tried to touch the statue as well.
@foughtthelol
@foughtthelol 11 месяцев назад
@@WaddleBih How come the killers made by the hallucinogen can not be killed it would seem? You can stab 'em, shoot em with pistol, SMG and shotgun? Also what is the timeline with the burial of the twins? All info we get is "sometime later" the plan to dig them up was hatched by the guy who had become jealous, I mean it would seem that two newborns would not survive being buried alive but few hours.
@WaddleBih
@WaddleBih 10 месяцев назад
@@foughtthelol There isn't any official explanation for that as far as I know. So either the hallucinogen makes those affected extremely resilient to damage, or it's plot armor on the same level of why the "fake" Scissormen in Clock Tower 2 (1996) are basically unkillable and act no different from the genuine one until the plot demands it. As for the burial timeline, I can only suppose that Midoshima knew about Saido's tradition and date of burial ahead of time and swooped in right after to dig them up (which would make sense, since he's conspired to do so with the guy who employed both of them).
