July 13, 2021 - I was biking down the Hochimini trail, which is on the benchland just above town in Jasper, and came across a grizzly. I took my bear spray out and then filmed as I tried to talk to it calmly.

I had one chase me on my Horse 2 years ago, I'll never forget that, they are much quicker than you think! It was doing the same thing, circling around us, when it got out of the easiest way to run, we bolted, and it gave chase. The terrain was a bit rough, and I was just praying that Whisper wasn't going to stumble or fall. She did great, and we were out of there. At least I knew that I had the edge in endurance, there's no way that bear could run for as long as Whisper my horse.

Me either! I'm in Australia and everybody, not Australian, says everything here is trying to kill you. They aren't. If you go hiking you wear boots that cover your lower legs and you regularly stomp to let any snakes know that you're coming and they'll get out of your way. There is nothing here like a bear that might attack. North Americans are in far greater danger going into the wild than anyone here is!

@El Sucio Federali The point is to talk to the bear so it knows you are human and talk in such a way that it doesn't sound threatening. Obviously, the bear doesn't understand what I'm saying or that I'm talking in a kind voice, but it can hear that the tone is non-threatening. I stood my ground so that bear didn't see me as prey and I think the bear was a little nervous about approaching me as a result. If you act afraid, then grizzlies may see you as food but otherwise, they aren't sure what to expect and will steer clear 99% of the time. Would love to know what you think a person in this situation should do.

@@stellalush4547 I have body odour that apparently smells awful. Kinda like the weasel family or reptiles like snakes, lizards when threatened they musk which gives off such a bad smell it repels all would be predators. Mine smell so bad at times people and animals alike find it hard to be around me or near me, much less eat me lol. But the extent of which my scent could be that bad is usually quite rare. Or well, just not that often. I guess when I am anxious or afraid and I start sweating, alot, I would smell bad. So in situations like this where a bear or whatever that's after me would be not interested, in fact, it would be repulsed or put off by me instead.

Probably the number one thing to keep in mind with bears is their unpredictability (so I've heard/read/discussed). So who knows what was really at play here. Some commenters have said the bear was sizing him up, circling him, another comment said the bear was just trying to get back on the trail the cyclist was on, and the guy was blocking his return, so the bear swung wider through the trees. And maybe the biggest thing the rider had going for him was, he wasn't acting like prey. And somewhere in that unpredictable bear's mind, he or she decided the rider wasn't a threat---at least not today.

Ok I am going to lure him in by acting nonchalant and pretend like I am not interested, sniffing the air a few times & sneaking a few peeks will allow me to measure the correct distance, while I ever move closer then I will circle into the high bushes where he can't see me ( as my heart is racing & my adrenaline is flowing ) then I am going to burst out of the brush with great fury and serious anger & chew his ass like nobodies business, just stay cool, a couple more minutes, just a couple more min......

I've had encounters with black bears that had me continually watching for them afterward, during the hike. The craziest one, was with a cougar. Crossed his path in the snow. He wasn't 50 yards away. I carefully continued on. I was on about a five hour hike. I was constantly stopping and doing a 360 degree scan, searching for it. I could just feel that it was watching. I was hunting, so wasn't terrified or anything. Sat and had lunch, at one point, and watched for it everywhere. Never once spotted it. Continuing on my hike, i made my way back down below, from the mountain/hill i had been on most the time. I was hiking upward when i crossed the cat. Now, back down below, i eventually crossed the bush road and did a long hike on the other side. I did a big loop, and i froze when i cut my own track again. There, walking right alongside my tracks in the snow, were cougar tracks. No way was it a second cat. I followed my tracks back out to where i crossed the road, and sure enough, the cat had followed me the entire time. But it was out of curiousity, probably wondering wtf i was doing walking through his territory. It's den would have been on that hill somewhere. There were rabbits everywhere, and plentiful with deer too, so it would never go hungry. But it was an eye-opener, as to how stealthy they can be. It was there the whole day, and i could sense that. And even scanning for him through the whole hike, knowing he was watching, i couldn't spot him once.

the bear saw him, mentioning scent is completely ridicules. If you knew anything about bears, its behavior showed that he was in its path, and he should have known to step aside and not stand in her path. The bear was confused trying to figure out how to get around him (because it´s unlikely the bear will just run somewhere it has not walked before). She was trying to find a scent of any other danger and something familiar to her.

Well done - you remained calm and didn't challenge (although your voice did sounded anxious at times). Film was unbelievably steady! Bikings the problem - you move too fast like prey fleeing predators.
@paulbrodwin8364
@paulbrodwin8364 Год назад
Okay, I'm not a bear expert, but I read everything I can about safety in bear country. Biking is definitely a big problem, at least with black bears. Deer are their natural prey, and a mountain biker (or, for that matter, a fast runner) streaming through the woods is a very close mimic of a deer. If you believe that running away from a bear triggers their predatory response, then the same logic applies to (unknowingly) running or biking nearby a bear. ... I have hiked in black bear country (upper peninsula of Michigan), but I would never go jogging or biking there.

Bears are like people, some good and some bad! We tempt fait each time we enter the domain of the Apex predator…. Own damn fault if something bad happens! My thoughts on this encounter: 1. The bear wasn’ hungry? 2.The bear was a better natured bear? 3. You were the not the focus of the bear at that time. Timothy Treadwell was killed for several reasons: 1. He came across a bad/rank bear. 2. The bears were going to food storage mode for hibernation which placed he and his girlfriend in a dangerous position 3. He never appreciated the fact that a bear is STILL a wild animal that is not a manipulative pet.
