It’s still hard to believe the ship in the desert is a model and forced perspective. One of the great shots.

That Mother Ship blew my little mind. I guess I was too young to even question how things were made back then, or how many hours the artists had to put in; and even if I had known it back then, I wouldn't have been able to process it. Only now, soon to be 50, have I done enough work and have encountered the ridiculously long days (in other fields) in recent years, so that I can begin to appreciate the efforts of these artists. I'm really grateful they put the effort in, but feel a teeny bit guilty because those wonderful scenes, which felt Euphoric to watch, came at a cost; a little bit of their physical/mental health perhaps. But I suppose I've learned of late that sometimes, in order to achieve something magnificent, you may have to go overboard (or might be required to), not always obviously, but seems to be the case with these movie setups. My hat off to these people. They gave me so much childhood escape.

Interesting post mate. I was too young to have worked on this film, but re mental- torture, I honestly wake up in a cold-sweat where I find myself counting imaginary rivets, and I have missed one and I have to start all over again. I call this condition OCRCD Obsessive Compulsive Rivet-Counting Disorder. It is purely a quest for perfection, which can of course never be achieved, all any creative has to try and do... is let go! Give up your baby to it's new parent! But, unlike yourself... I can't do maths! 🏆

As a kid, I was just enjoying movies never questioning how something was done now as an adult most of the time I can tell if it's mat painting, miniature, animatronics, etc and appreciate the work and effort people put into making films. I actually now love behind scenes and making videos more then actual movies.

Honestly, as a little kid, I just thought it was actual footage, and never for a second thought anything was simulated or fake. I thought all the hoopla surrounding the movie was because it was all real. It was pretty much the best time to be a little kid.

I can't get enough of this kind of thing. As a kid In the 70s bought Starlog and Famous Monsters whenever I saw them, always wanted to be one of these guys. I did go on to study art, so hearing these people talk, seeing them work, really resonates.

What a coincidence, two items in a row feature models from Buck Rogers! How these ships, from Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica, filled my TV childhood and fantasy - together with all the big screen marvels being shared on this channel. This is what dreams are made of - literally. Thanks for sharing!

What they did back then is nothing short as an art form. I recently watch a reaction from a young person watching Alien from 1979 for the first time. He said ...wow.. the CGI looked amazing back then. People responded. Oh no no no. That is not CGI. It’s practical effects. The space ships were miniatures.

At the Dulles location, not the Nat'l Mall location. I was going to add the same but you've beat me to it. I was pleasantly surprised to see it there. I never would have thought that it was something I'd see there but was a nice addition.

I heard a story of a production artist working on a project, that had to go home to sleep. When the other artists came in the next morning they could see the degeneration of detail on the model but didn't have time to do it over so they copied the loss of detail on the remaining sections. Now, that's artistry. ;-)

I don't know about that extended cut with the interior of the mothership...honestly, if I had had to do an interior of the mothership, it would have been far less greebly detailed, and far more from Roy's point of view as he walked up a set of dark stairs to a set of open, brilliantly lit doors. He would have entered one, and we would have seen blurred lighted images passing in front of his backlit head for about five or six seconds...then the camera would have receded back down the stairs and out the ramp entrance...cut to Lacombe.

Ever wondered why Richard Dreyfuss made that Devil's Towers diorama in the living room? Spielberg - 'Great models guys! I really like them. By the way.... I could use a model or a diorama of the Devil's Tower in Wyoming where the climax is set. Maybe a 10 by 10 ft base with trees, bushes small hillsides with 5 ft tall 'rock' in the middle. Got time for that...? Dreyfuss - 'Hold my beer - I got this!
