This is part 1 of what is going to be a multi-part series of some of the closest encounters I've had with whales!
Please know, that close encounters with whales only happen when the animals themselves decide to show curiosity towards our vessels, not from our boats trying to "force" such close interactions. In US waters a 100 yard guideline is recommended to keep the animals, and humans safe. However, whales don't have to follow the rules, and sometimes they want to come take a closer look at us humans! When that happens with large whales, we turn off the motors and sit in neutral while the whales are engaging with us.
With Orcas, especially the ones in this video, it's slightly different. The orca footage was taken in Mexico (very different than watching the orcas that live in Washington State for example), and this pod of orcas is famous for bow and stern wake riding boats. These are some of the most playful orcas in the world, and they enjoy the waves created by boats. However, we are professionals and this activity should not be attempted by private boaters. Understand that I spend upwards of 2500 hours a year on the water, and these interactions are a highlight of the best of the best encounters I've had. These interactions are extremely rare!
