Possibly because it sound better than nfl champions. Technically they are world champions until other countries make a football league of there own.

@@dcb6729 Well, I guess that's a sort of justification:) But it really is pompous to think that they are "world" champions, et alone to put that on the rings. Love the game, am disgusted by the make-beleive drivel that goes with it
