I am fairly sure that they are brushed DC motors. They required no external commutation to drive them. Brush-less DC motors require external commutation control.

@@grtyvr I stand corrected! Thanks for the link! I've dissected many a poor printer... and have found steppers and small magnets motors. I've cut some of these smaller ones open, as I've a box full of them. I have found some of the newer printers use larger DC motors for the main drive but I never thought to cut one open. I like to save the larger ones. Thanks for the demonstration!
