This is actually a pretty pleasant discussion, I love Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, the Downward spiral, and the Fragile, With Teeth and Year Zero are solid albums. The slip is all over the place. Ghosts though is wonderful. Trent is at his best when manically depressed. But He always puts out good music.
In terms of having something relevant to say, I may be a fan yes but he's always had something to say, the Fragile was critically acclaimed its commercial success didn't do as well as The downward spiral but that's what happens when You take five years between each album. I think You're looking at it from the confines of someone who is not a fan, money is a byproduct of music, effecting people is a byproduct of art. It all depends on how You look at it, admittedly we're both a little biased.
You think incorrectly if you feel I am not a fan. I am critical, but I am also realistic. Money is not a byproduct of any music. Selling music in this age is not what it used to be in the early 90s. It takes more then a big label or good art to become successful. Its political, for some its the luck of the draw. Being in the right place at the right time and talking about relevant things. The world has not stopped producing great musicians its simply the way they are heard that's changed.
I assumed You weren't a fan after You described his singing as "whiny blathering" and maybe not immediately or directly, perhaps You have to play live shows to make a single dime, but money CAN surely be a byproduct of music making. I agree about the right place right time and relevancy. When You sing about How You feel how can you determine relevance? The only song He has made that has lost relevance is Capital G. Musicians are born daily, whether or not they'll be heard is a different story.
[Verse 1: Kanye West] I can make shit rhyme I can make shit rhyme if I'm... feel like And if I, don't... So I just might not, cause I, don't want And i'm just gonna, freestyle for the first time With a freestyle, that don't even go together Ough No rhymes that's my new shit! Nothing rhyme! How that sound! Uh ohh! Wap! You ain't got the answers Sway! I could sing all, night!

Remember Fast Times at Ridgemont High when that geek is taking that chick out. They’re in the car and what blasting? Kashmir. In a remake of the movie, during that part, I would choose this song to play. I know, shave butter. A recent Fast Times.
its debatable though arguably Id say really the best work came from Pretty Hate Machine / Downward Spiral. After that, many of the great producers and musicians working with Trent that made it all possible had left for one reason or another...even in a decent album like the fragile...its missing a huge amount of soul and though its good...its not groundbreaking. Its absurd to expect an artist to produce more then 1 great album though possible its rare yet expected of them.
your perception is obviously within the confines of being a fan...and thats perfectly fine man however with the exception of "the fragile" all of those albums were commercial failures, they also failed to achieve critical acclaim. Money is a byproduct of success in the music industry and make no mistake about it my little buddy...trent is playing the game no differently then Justin Bieber.
Profit is a product of success as a businessman... he had plenty of it but also has had years of management battles his own label and sales that sky rocketed on opening week of his previous albums which just like any other performer sales plateu after a while because promotions is onto the next thing coming out as well as radio. Yes while true he is playing the same game as bieber... he is doing it with old and new school promoting methods. You may look at him now but he come up from the muck a few times... had he still had NOTHING (his old label) and caught malm decades ago... he'd be in a different place, eventhough there is evidence in his work especially during WITH TEETH and BROKEN EP regarding TVT records and steve gotlieb about the trials and tribulations with both managers and production labels during his career.
