"why would I give my socks to them for free?" what a weird question. That seems so spiteful. They give their socks to the landfill for free. But they don't want to give them to someone who can reuse them for free because they might make money from that? It doesn't make logical sense. I just sent my socks to smartwool after doing a bunch of research and they were out of the prepaid mailers so I just paid to mail them myself. Like sometimes you do the right thing just because it's right. When did we lose that as a society?

Can we just talk about Smartwool's packaging for a second though. All of their socks that I've gotten have come packaged either in entirely paper, or in paper with a fabric elastic band thingy holding the socks together. Honestly I'm excited when I get the second kind because I found that those little bands make AMAZING hair ties........

It makes me sad that so many of your tiktok comments were about smartwool supposedly profiting off of people giving them free material. First of all, I’m sure this whole recycling system cost a gazillion dollars to design, build and maintain, so i doubt that there’s a huge financial incentive for them to be doing this. And also I think that because they’re the only company in the world with this process, maybe they are deserving of applause

This video is balm for my soul and came in just the right time. Two days ago an acquaintance of mine told me how amazing she things the minset shift of really big brands is and used h&m as the example, because of their recycling campagne. I felt so silly because it really upset me but I didn't want to be the pessimist that just said: that's all bullshit and nothing has changed for the better. Can't wait to share this video with her.

Is this one of the companies where you pay for a bag/a chunk of the recycling cost then they (supposedly) turn it into clothing? There are a couple small businesses that I've seen advertising that lately, and it sounds exactly like setting I'd love to support on paper. I'm just not sure how much of the clothing *actually* gets turned into different clothing, which makes me hesitant (especially when things are so tough financially)

I was just staring at some socks with holes in them this morning wondering what to do with them. Now I know that, if I replace them with SmartWool socks, I won't be wondering again! (For anyone curious, said socks with holes went into my 'tiny scraps of fabric' collection to be used for stuffing instead of polyester fiber fill if I ever need it.) Edit: I missed the first time I watched that SmartWool is accepting ANY brand of socks, is that right? If so, I will certainly pull those holey socks out of the fabric bin to go to them!
@HarryLovesRuth

If you don't have sensory issues, darning is also an option. Learning duplicate stitch darning was my pandemic lockdown craft. (I recommend wooly nylon sergers thread, BTW. It's fine enough to sink in, but it has good mechanical stretch to it.)

@lestranged
@lestranged Год назад
Socks are such a dilemma for low-waste because they always get a hole in the toe or heel but the whole leg portion is still in perfect shape. And the leg portion has the cute designs on it that made you buy those socks in the first place. . It's just like not usable anymore as a sock but 90% of it is still good. I hate to throw away something in that situation. Sometimes I have turned cute socks into arm warmers when the foot section gets worn out.
