As well as Cloti having multiple confirmations both in Ultimania and from the words of the developer, versus zero confirmations of anything other than friendship between Aerith and Cloud, and not one from the developers. Cloti doesn't really have those as evidence either. Tifa _begs_ Cloud to make the promise. The first two times she asks/mentions it, Cloud just says "What?" and then Tifa says "Come on--! Promise me----!" which is when he finally agrees. It took him a lot longer to make that promise than it did to make his promise to be Aerith's bodyguard. He also forgot the promise and had to be reminded of it since Tifa said "So you DID forget." Even after the reminder, Cloud still refuses to help until Tifa works hard to convice him. Meanwhile when Aerith says she knew he’d come for her in the Shinra building, Cloud says “Hey, I'm your bodyguard, right?” despite having already saved her from Reno so his ‘job’ and promise to protect her was done yet he came anyway without prompting or a reminder. If Tifa was so important to him, Cloud would have no qualms agreeing to the promise or needing a reminder - just like with his promise to Aerith. Cloud also never asks for additional payment from Aerith but wants extra pay for the second bombing mission. The Mideel thing really gets so blown out of proportion by Tifa/Cloti fans. The only thing that is Cloti about it is that Cloud _partly_ wanted to be a SOLDIER to impress Tifa (he lists other reasons too) and that he at one point mumbles "............ a sealed up secret...... wish...... Tender feelings...... that no one can ever know......" but the rest of it is set against Tifa being shown to not notice Cloud's exclusion and loneliness as a kid and her not being sure that he's actually Cloud of Nibelheim because she implies he might be a clone: "You must find the answer yourself......If you can't...... Then you......" She starts Cloud on his journey to his self-(re)discovery by telling him her version of Nibelheim and is there to listen but that's the extent of it. In fact, it's Cloud always fact-checking Tifa about their childhood and Cloud even admits he thought Tifa hated him as kids: "I thought to myself Tifa would never come... that she hated me." Hard to be in love with someone/be close to them when you think they hate you. Afterwards Tifa even says to Barret that Cloud found himself: "When I was in the Lifestream I saw the real Cloud. I mean, I didn't really find him. Cloud found himself on his own..." So Tifa doesn't "repair Cloud's mind" or "free him from his demons" as I've heard Clotis argue. Cloti fans also forget that the _reason_ Cloud ended up in this state was because Cloud had messed up memories and Tifa never set him straight about the Nibelheim incident until all seemed lost (Meteor was summoned, Holy couldn't be released, WEAPONs were on a rampage, Aerith was dead, Cloud was catatonic after falling in the Lifestream in the Northern Crater). After Cloud's memories are restored, Sephiroth can't control Cloud anymore which means a lot of Cloud's woes were enabled by Tifa actively refusing to tell him his error. That's a lot of negatives related to Tifa for Cloud compared to the brief mention that he had a crush on Tifa a whole 7 years prior. And even _with_ his crush, he still hesitated to make her that promise...His coldness to Tifa when the game first starts speaks volumes about his "feelings" for her after his initial crush. On the second bombing mission when Tifa says she's scared, Cloud says "Too late to be saying that now. Why'd you come along anyway?" Compare that to his response to Aerith saying she's feeling alone, "But I'm...... we're here for you, right?"

#PoorAerith, Cloud is only interested in Tifa, and Aerith is one-sidedly in love with Cloud.

The other thing about Lightning or 'Claire' being a combination of Cloud and Aerith is literally her name. In Japan, 'Clerith' is the first two katakana of both of their names (クラエア) and reads as "Kuraea" which is really close to how the Japanese would pronounce 'Claire' (クレア) "Kurea".

More importantly, in all parts of the compilation, the image of Tifa and Cloud is balanced. There are even words from the developers to that effect. So who cares what Lighting is all about!

And then along came the theme song trailer for Rebirth, with Cloud and Aerith together at the forefront, and the theme song confirmed to be Aerith's answer to Hollow, which was from Cloud's perspective. Confirmed by Loren Allred and Nobuo Uematsu himself. Clerith is canon. Also, Zack and Aerith's relationship never really felt all that romantic, they mostly felt like just friends hanging out sometimes. Not to mention Cloud x Tifa isn't a very healthy relationship for either of them.

Cloud has a great way showing he cares for Tifa by literally never acknowledging her or the kiss for the rest of the game. All he does is go on more dates with Aerith and literally make her the priority for the rest of the game. Cloud is not in a state of mind to care for Tifa. She literally gets hurt and he ignores her several times.

Regardless, there is still no further attention given to Tifa throughout the rest of the game with Cloud romantically, all of which is one sided on her end unfortunately. She's on the same playing field as Aerith. I don't mean Cloud doesn't care for Tifa at all, he clearly does. But his reactions to her versus Aerith with possibly getting hurt and follow up, going missing, potential or actual death, even consistent romance scenes is not even. There is more focus on Aerith to which Cloud has better reactions than with Tifa at least at this stage in the game for obvious reasons. It seems all you guys can focus on is an optional kiss literally stated to be fanservice by the devs and a one sided almost kiss. Literally throughout the compilation Cloud us the absolute worse partner to Tifa always putting his own needs or selfishness before her and she goes along with it. I love her as a character but she deserves better than the half assed attention she's getting from Cloud consistently. Square even puts their astrological signs on their profiles and Leo man and Taurus women are not ideal matches for this very reason however they BOTH have to work equally for it to work. Cloud is not at a stage to do this yet. Cloud and Aerith are considered a near perfect match, much to the OG interpretation by Cait Sith. Even factoring in the moon signs, both Aerith and Tifa have equal potential with Cloud, but their sun signs make up the difference. Square put these details out there for a reason. For chapter 12 digest in the ultimania, square makes sure they showcase Aeriths date with Cloud, showcase a photo of their date on the web page for No Promises to Keep, and even show Aeriths date with Cloud on his character profile page. The gold saucer dates they show only up to Tifas hug with Cloud (the low affection scene). It's difficult to equally balance two heroines especially in this part of the story. Right now, Aerith is the priority and her relationship with Cloud, romantic or not, is the priority with Square.

You claim to love Tifa but you're doing her and Cloud a disservice by blatantly ignoring their interactions because you favor Aerith. Also, in the OG Cloud's love for Tifa is literally part of the story. While his relationship with Aerith is apart of the narrative. Two very different things. And considering how the story beats are the same between the OG and Remake, this won't change.

Hmm, and Advent Children ends with Cloud calling Tifa to get the kids together for a family picnic. Romantic or not he moved on I'd say. No use in beating a well figuretively and kinda literal dead horse since Aerith and Zack also moved on at the end of Advent Children (which is just as valid). Who cares about romance when the entire deal was for Cloud to just get some damn peace after years of suffering?

Thanks for not being a total ass about it! (Not sarcasm, actually grateful.) If you read Case of Tifa or play the follow up for ff7 (Dirge of Cerberus) Cloud and Tifa actually don’t move on together, rather, they have a big “family” of friends. In “The Maiden Who Travels the Planet”, also canon, Aerith completely rejects Zack in the lifestream, despite his advances.

Leah Janulgue I don’t think I’d say Cloud abused Tifa... she didn’t make her feelings very clear, even in the Highwind scene. Instead of constructively trying to understand Cloud’s grieving process and constructively help him, she maintains bitter feelings over Clerith’s bond and reacts explosively to Cloud withdrawing from her and the others. She flatout trivialised his trauma and depression in her AC(C) “lecture”, and reduces Aerith to a “memory”. She repeatedly calls Cloud even when he moves out and doesn’t reply. She enabled Cloud to be ostracised by Nibelheim as a kid, and then enabled him to keep believing in a lie which made him susceptible to Sephiroth’s mental manipulation, all because she “didn’t want to lose” the guy she only spoke to once and only took notice in him because he was gonna be strong and famous and the rest of the boys had left town, and he’s her last link to her past. She deliberately holds back in certain situations and gets Cloud to rescue her even though she’s proven to be more than capable of saving herself when he’s not around. In my opinion, Tifa is closer to abusing Cloud than the other way around. Cloud has continuously been shown to have social issues as a result of being excluded as a child, and is described as being “clueless” when it comes to both Aerith and Tifa showing romantic interest in him. Not once did Cloud string Tifa along, if anything he’s always tagging along with Tifa and the others. He never expressed romantic interest in Tifa, he simply sees her as a friend and wants to honour the promise he made. He never degraded Tifa either, he just didn’t have an exceptionally close relationship with her like he does with Aerith. He still values Tifa, but ultimately his heart is elsewhere. And of course, having PTSD, depression and/or any other mental illness can cause people to internalise their struggles, shutting out their loved ones. This is not abuse, this is self-defence, albeit not a very constructive one. My mother kept accusing me of being emotionally abusive because I was withdrawing from the family, when in reality it was my coping mechanism against her constant gaslighting, verbal insults/taunts, selective information and micromanagement of my life.w

The guilt about Aerith, the fear of losing Tifa and the children, which eventually makes Cloud aloof. Nomura says - The more happy Cloud is, the more lonely he becomes. He's afraid of losing everything he has, and that becomes the cause of his alienation. Especially when he can't save Denzel, whom he takes as a sign from Aerith who sent him to redeem himself to her in this way. He fails, and that makes him what he is in AC. But the problems are solved as the story progresses, Cloud listens to Tifa, and drops the weight he was carrying (dilly dilly shilly shally, in the Japanese version of the movie Tifa pronounces onomatopoeia for the sound of carrying something heavy - tsuru tsuru). So all their bad dynamics are not their bad compatibility, but the pressure of their past mistakes, but they get over all these problems. So what's good is not a relationship that can only coexist in a greenhouse, but one that passes through storms. Cloud and Tifa's relationship is like that. They go through a lot of problems, and by the end of the compilation they are together. Cloud has not been attending church since the beginning. He has been living happily with Tifa for almost two years. But after ordering Elmyra, he begins to feel guilty. Tifa of course doesn't know this, and so she begins to have complicated feelings, but after visiting the church, and she sees the geostigma bandage there, she realizes what the problem is. Now running a delivery business while helping out Tifa with the newly opened “Seventh Heaven” bar, Cloud, Tifa, Marlene and Denzel lived together like a family. However, when Cloud contracts Geostigma he disappears. Behind these actions lies feelings of guilt towards his past failure to protect people who were important to him, but through his battle with Kadaj’s gang, the legacy of Jenova, he regains the courage to face reality. I wouldn't say Cloud is out of character for kissing Tifa. It's more like it's the original him showing up, like when they almost kissed in Gongaga. And you misunderstand about the Zack part. Zack is a very delicate subject Cloud. Tifa doesn't want to trigger any episodes for Cloud when they're on a date. It'd kill the mood.

(Unlike those other comments you received) I for one saw the dates differently as how Tifa and Aerith handled the Zack conversation. I love Tifa but as far as a love interest goes, I don’t see her with cloud in that sense. I never did, even in 1997 but in rebirth. It still felt the same. It just doesn’t make sense to me and cloud does open up more as a friend in rebirth! Which is amazing to their relationship as FRIENDS but the whole Gongaga scene felt one sided cause she took the opportunity to try to kiss him when he was trying to be transparent about himself. I’m watching the scene like “Tifa … girl he’s trying to open up, this isn’t the time to go for the kiss.” so it felt awkward as cloud just stands there confused and unsure on what was happening. Now the golden saucer date! I didn’t appreciate Tifa lying to cloud about zack, it felt like it was a personal thing she kept from him. Why? Idk and I don’t want to assume it was because of Aerith’s response after she did but! Didn’t she say that she was going to tell Aerith about him remembering Zack and telling Aerith that he died? She told cloud that she was the one that was going to do when he was going to do it himself. Well she didn’t lie but she could have said yeah, I told her but let’s not talk about that right now cause it’s suppose to her moment right? Finally alone with cloud. God I can tell you a lot about Tifa’s golden saucer date and a lot of things I was just … upset about cause she deserves better. Not to mention, that kiss was not ever mentioned again after that chapter… Aerith lied because she didn’t want the conversation to be about Zack, she wanted to talk about cloud. About him, about finding the true cloud. It’s almost like cloud is trying to find out who he should pursue, Aerith or Tifa?

@@RONINPUNKtachi20 Your issue is that you can't see Cloud and Tifa as any more than friends. She's always been his love interest so you have to look at their moments that way. For the Gongaga scene Cloud also leans in for the kiss, it was not one sided. I you look at him you can she his eyes are focused on her lips and he leans in. You can tell he leans in because there is a painting right behind him and you can he moves forward. It wasn't even inappropriate to go in for the kiss. You're being a bit hypocritical with the Gold Saucer date. In Aerith she also lies about Zack. Like I said in my earlier comment, Zack is a touchy subject and could trigger Cloud, a date is not the right time to bring him up. Also the reason the kiss isn't mentioned again is because the Gold Saucer dates are non canon, so they can't be brought up during the canon story.

I don’t see the scenes like that because they tell me a different story, it doesn’t seem romantic and it’s very one sided to me. I don’t consider it to be a slow burner to when both hardly communicate or know each other that well. Is there tension? Yes because she’s attractive but I don’t know what you mean when he was leaning in, he hardly was. Tifa was the one going for the kiss, it’s what she wanted to do. Besides when someone is trying to be transparent with their emotions and thoughts, allow them to but don’t make it about you. The last thing cloud needed in that moment was a kiss and it could have confused him because they were talking about the past and his fear of soldier Degradation. Where in that conversation did it warrant a kiss? or any romantic cues? Tifa is very transparent with her feelings with cloud but they don’t mention it or talk about it unless you decide to in the game but if you don’t. It just doesn’t happen. Aerith and cloud do, in chapter 14. The whole chapter is about them. Again I could care less who you ship or how you perceive the story. As someone who does stories and is a creator, I know what the game is telling me. That moment in Gongaga was not romantic and it definitely express the love triangle between Aerith, Tifa and cloud. But it was only that moment. Zack may have been a touchy subject but I stand with my statement. She could have just easily have told him, “yes I did, I spoke to Aerith about it” he wanted to know what Aerith said. Why bring it up during the date with Tifa? She took his role in that when he could have easily done it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ in fact he said “we should tell her” but was confused when Tifa said “let me do it” Also you are telling me that Tifa loves Cloud’s persona? Cause that isn’t the real cloud…
