Cloud Atlas is an overlooked masterpiece (AND PURE KINO) 

It’s a crime that this wasn’t at least nominated for an Academy Award for editing.

I love this movie, is criminaly underrated... even the OST is amazing. And what they did with the cast... it just blows my mind.

I will admit that when I first saw this movie, I wasn't feeling it. I was lost and confused and my mind practically gave up less than halfway through. I will say now, without ANY hesitation, this is hands down, without a doubt, one of the best movies of all time. Definitely in my top 5. It took me more than one viewing but the more I watched it, the more it opened my mind and amazed me. Today I could not put a number on how many times I've rewatched this film and I've also read the book multiple times. We NEED more movies like this. We NEED more movies that make people think and don't just shove action and CGI down our throats. Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with movies like that from time to time but we need more inspirational and thought-provoking art.

This is the best review I've seen so far on RU-vid, every other review is like "cloud atlas is epic, it's ambitious, it's bold" and no one talks about actually why this is such a great example of cinema well done

I was blown away the first time I watched this. I was amazed and delighted such an imaginative, unconventional was actually made. No cookie cutter film this.

Cloud Atlas is my favorite movie of all the time.

This is one of my all time favourite movies, just brilliantly done and very underrated. Loved how many characters and story lines with so few actors.

Great analysis, well thought out. When I first saw this film, I was so engrossed, I didn’t want to blink. Although it has been overlooked by The Academy, I really feel that it will be regarded as the Citizen Kane of the 21st century. One theme that struck me strongly was made clear in a character’s assertion that “the meek are meat; the rest do eat”. The film shows how evil stems from those to regard people as expendable tokens, a means to an end, and feel that their suffering is irrelevant.

Correct answer, Cloud Atlas is a masterpiece.

I read the book after seeing the movie twice and I feel like the Wachowskis did a fantastic job adapting the book while also making it their own. The passion put into this project makes it so engrossing for me and it's probably my favorite Tom Hanks performance.

One of these days I'm going to make the case that you're missing it on Jupiter Ascending. I know I'm way, way in the minority here, but the only reason I put it below Cloud Atlas is that the latter is so next level that I still get overwhelmed by it. I'm not ready to make it right now, but if you're willing to listen, I'm going to be making my case for it maybe not too long from now. "But I think that most of the problem is that people are kinda dumb." OMG, thank you for saying this, and I never thought I would agree with that. But that's really what this is. This movie was literally life transformative for me, in that watching it set off a chain of events for me that saw my whole family literally moving half way across the nation a year later and going on this type of vision quest, or maybe hero's journey. It's so brilliant on so many levels that no matter how many times I watch it, the next time I get tidal waves of new meaning. People just mostly right now aren't interested in decoding a movie this densely packed with meaning. It drives me crazy, because there's so many incredible movies out there that no one is seeing. Gabriel. Blueberry (or "Renegade" in the US). You want tonal consistency? Watch The Salton Sea. It goes all over the place but then you realize that that was the whole point. I love films where you can sense that every frame you're watching was included in there for a reason. It's what I love about The Matrix, and I can think of so many films that fit this description. It's such a tragedy that people don't realize what they're missing, and I hope it doesn't mean the death of such films, because we need them now more than ever. I think I have seen this movie 6 times.... 1st time in the cinema. There is so many stories in the stories..... I don't think I found anything new in my last watch, but in the first 5 I found some new details. Another thing about this movie, is, the 6 time linies are made in 6 different genres as I see it. The major reason why alot of people don't like it, is the fact, you need to be focused when you watch it... If you miss parts of the movie you miss some of the understanding... It is a movie where you can't talk to your friends when you watch it... it is a very concentrated way of watching a movie.... I have heard several people say "I didn't noticed they meet again and again in the different time lines..." ... and I go WTF they even hint it in words in the movie... and what part of "Everything is connected" don't people understand? It is one of my favorit movies for sure.

I'm amazed how you not even once mentioned Tom Tykwer, who directed three of the six stories.

There are many movies I loved but when asked what is my favourite movie this will always be the one.

I wouldn't be too hard on Tom Hanks' character in the post-apocolyptic storyline, (Zachary). He might seem cowardly, at first, but what you have to remember is that, in the book, Zachary was only 13 years old.

I left the theatre knowing I just watched my favorite film of all time. Each segment, and there are six, could have been a seperate film. Awesome review, very analytical in the good sense of the word. There is only another movie I have seen as many times as Cloud Atlas, Blade Runner, I never get tired of seeing them from time to time. I think both have a superb poignant aftertaste. Thank you for the reviewing.

Glad this film getting some love here. It’s easily my favorite film since it came out and is actually better than the book but only because the visual and auditory medium confers advantages for showing even more interweaving than can the written word alone. And the book is beautifully written. So… between this commentary and one other by Like Stories of Old there’s a lot to say about why this work was so satisfying.

Great review vive watched the movie many times and have read the book. Another theme that comes across to me, that counterpoints the love theme is the theme of predation. For each of the loves, there is an idea of some of the many ways we prey on one another.

Love the movie and I think this is one of the rare cases where the film is actually superior to the book because without the visual assistance the book has a harder time illustrating it’s themes, although it’s still very good.

how do you make a 20min review of this amazing movie and not even mention Tom tykwer?! he is just as important and essential to how incredible this cloud atlas turned out as the twins... he deserves an equal amt. of accolades, considering 2 of the 6 featurettes were filmed by him(each director filmed 2 parts, fwiw) a full 1/3 of cloud atlas.... imo, tykwer is as talented a director as each of the wachowskis, having helmed the only foreign language movie I've had any desire to view multiple times in, run Lola run, for example... cool tho, that you highlighted this film nonetheless and the brilliance thereof, so more ppl end up viewing cloud atlas... because this movie deserves as many to see and experience it as possible for sure. anyways, cheers man.

Cloud Atlas is one of my favourite movies, and it´s nice to see when people appreciate it. I would have said great review, but did you leave out Tom Tykwer on purpose? I mean I love it when people praise the Wachowskis, because they are great, and I love their work, but here they´re still only half of the team (or maybe you mentioned him somewhere and I didn´t catch it...then sorry)

Agree with you completely, people are so used to movies spoon feeding them everything, nothing can be implied because they won’t get it and they come across as stupid. Are they stupid though or just mentally lazy?

I liked this version of the movie a lot, but the version with Jerry Smith in the lead role is the best.

I am a huge David Mitchell fan, and a huge fan of Cloud Atlas the book. I read and loved the book first, and then watched the film. As much as individual scenes were wonderful realisations of the book, I found it to fall massively short of the book simply because of how much was missing. It removed huge chunks of the book (and removes an entire plot twist from the end of the Sonmi storyline), so I found myself disappointed in comparison to my beloved book

12:18 people are ...... this answer a lot . i watch this film 3 times at cinema and i remember clearly i go every time with different friends and every time i was confuse they cant got it . i was amaze from first time . i remember crying like 25-30min and was touched like no other film before or to be hones very few times in my life and i love cinema and go often . for me this film is like a roller-coaster . from start to end . almost everything in one film . i also like Jupiter and i think is not that bad but i think there studio intervention made it worst not the sisters :"_)

My life has not changed even a little. The story was alright, but far away from groundbreaking. Acting was top-notch, no doubt about that.

I will be the naysayer, imo, one of the worst movies I have ever seen. They would have done better to cut back on the number of storylines as it was nearly a three hour movie, but for me, they did not spend enough time with one story/timeline for me to be invested. They should have stuck to three or four storyline in order to build up an invest in the characters as they carry over....but that'd just me.

Other than the gay stuff, great movie.
