Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-Z Variable Impedance Mic Activator
Upgrade the Potential of Your Microphone and Preamp
Cloudlifter® Mic Activators® use phantom power from your preamp to solve an array of common issues with microphones. Cloudlifters provide up to +25dB of ultra-clean gain, maximizing the microphones' signal strength and clarity, which lowers the noise floor and amount of gain required with any preamp. By allowing preamps to operate in a more comfortable gain range, the frequency response remains more intact and the self- noise of the preamp is reduced.
Character Control using Variable Input Impedance Loading
The CL-Z provides up to +25dB of ultra-clean gain, variable input impedance and a variable high-pass filter. Having an input impedance control that is sweepable from 150 ohms to 15k ohms allows you to creatively load the microphones' output transformer, with the result being a wide range of new tonal variations becoming available to each mic.
Variable High-Pass Filtering = Proximity Effect Control
The variable high-pass filtering works in conjunction with the impedance value, allowing for even more tonal shaping and control. When engaged, the frequency cutoff is affected by the impedance setting. This allows for a sweep-able frequency cutoff range from below 20hz to approximately 200hz, just by turning the "Z" knob. This can be especially useful for tonal shaping or reducing the proximity effect of a ribbon or dynamic microphone.
Variable Gain
The CL-Z has a two-position gain switch allowing for more gain, or the maximum gain available. Most of the time the MAX (approx. +25db) position will be used, however, the reduced gain setting (approx. +12dB) may be useful in situations where the source does not require as much gain, or where more of the preamps' color from additional gain is desired.
Features:
- Fully sweepable variable impedance loading from 150ohms to 15kohms
- High-Pass Filter frequency is variable from below 20hz to over 200hz
- Dual gain settings allow for a +12dB or +25dB increase
- Increases gain before feedback ratio in live & public address performances -- Easy to use self contained design requires only phantom power
- Compatible with tube, battery, or power supply driven microphones
- Protects any passive ribbon with no transfer of phantom
- Utilizes Patent Pending Class A ,Discrete JFET circuitry
- Rugged, road ready and portable, for studio, stage and broadcasting
- Free lifetime limited warranty for parts and labor, with product registration -- Handcrafted entirely in the USA
Responsibly Manufactured to Last a Lifetime
The CL-Z, like all Cloudlifters and Cloud® Microphones, carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty to the original owner, with product registration, and are completely made in the USA, using environmentally responsible methods.

Recording partner (the microphone geek) tried explaining this to me on phone. He failed...you have succeeded! Thank you!

A lot of these comments are kind of rude. I'm glad you made a video demoing this with a guitar and your voice. It would have been nice if you and someone else playing a simple song while you turned the knob, so we could get an idea of the change, from one end of the range to the other end, and not have you hopping around Z settings, but I guess it's still better than some of the other videos. A full range sweep with a guitar playing the same three chords would have said it all.

It is good video. Thinking about buying one now. The other ride comments are ridiculous.... I mean damn, who needs to relax? Pretty sure someone missed their nap time.

I love my SM7B! I use it for all my songs.

I've been considering this little device for quite some time and your video was very good at demonstrating its capabilities in both the spoken word, and the guitar. It's almost like a miniature full-featured microphone preamplifier. Still, the CL-Z combined with my Rupert Neve Porticol II Channel would be a can of worms. I'm now considering the basic Cloudlifter to help provide some clean drive for my RE20 while leaving the brain surgery to my Neve.

the Cloudlifter products work great with the RE20 as well! Good choice!

+Daniel Ortego Me too. My RE20 is weak at best. I have been considering this pedal/tool. Great demo video BTW.

With the gain switch, how much does Max provide (25db?) and how much does More provide?

[Forgive my ignorance please] When I plug my (Sterling ST170 active ribbon) into a Cloudlifter Z and then into Scarlett interface and it does nothing until I activate the Scarlett phantom power. Doesn’t this indicate that the 48V is actually getting through to the mic? Otherwise why would the 48V button do anything at all? Also, despite even the manual for the mic stating that it does not require phantom power, this mic plugged directly into the interface is silent till I hit 48V.

How dangerous is phantom power to dynamic mics?

This was very helpful to me thanks. What do u use when moving your guitars live? SM7 and CL-Z?

jesus christ you chatter and speak so choppy. Smooth it out. relax. no 5 hour energy before you talk. Also you should have actually demonstrated the sound with music or singing. Your chatter sounds like a call center from India or a disclaimer on an ad. OMG i just realized you finally play some guitar after 5 minutes of repeating yourself. Make intro shorter. that is your lesson for today. CLZ is nice.

I agree with Stax - I don't have all f'ing day. I know what it is and what it does - just get to the damn demonstration! I can't stand most of these dumb "demos" because they are stupid. They don't show the full range of the gear on a LIKELY sound source. Hire a damn singer who can sing if you can't. And get on with it - describe the features at the END of the video for the majority of us who come hear already having READ about it and just want to HEAR the damn thing. Ugh. I feel better now.
