Club Car Onward Lithium information and performance

Please note that this golf cart reaches a top speed of 23mph, any golf cart you purchase from CC will be limited to 19mph. This cart was not lifted when purchased and as a result of adding a lift to a non lifted cart, the top speed as well as acceleration both increased because of the larger circumference of the 23" tires as opposed to the stock size tires.
This was a little video I threw together to show the performance of my 2020 Club Car Onward HP lithium. I hope this helps answer some questions you may have if you are interested in one of these. If you have any additional questions, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer anything I can.

No problem! Just make sure you read the description. It was well after I made this video that I realized my cart was faster than it should be. It was because I added the lift to a nonlifted cart and bigger tires increased my top speed. You won't get 23mph out of a regular cart, only about 19mph.

Maybe not perfect but pretty danged good for someone just wanting to review a cool new piece of tech. Very well done and I have to say I think I at least will definitely be looking at one of these in the near future. So thank you for an awesome review that was very in depth on the performance side of this cart...

I'm looking at a 6 passenger Bintelli and for a 144ah Eco lithium battery upgrade $3,500. But the dealership said 30+ mile range and 30+ MPH. $19K plus a few upgrades (undercarriage LED lights, Bluetooth speaker system and better steering wheel).

I was thinking the lithium cart was faster. My 2024 Onward with the 14HP gas motor will go 27 with the wife, kid and dog onboard with me.
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 2 месяца назад
@Chrisfranks998 Well honestly, it's only supposed to go 19mph. They have it governed and the only reason I was able to get a few more MPH was the larger tires. My gas EZ-GO did about 25mph. Honestly, gas is probably the better way to go, I just wanted to try an electric one because of how quiet it was but gas was amazing for speed and especially range. A full tank of gas would last us a month of everyday use.

Thanks for the video. I just bought the 2021 limited edition in the red. I paid 15,500 for mine. It has everything yours do except the Bluetooth and the hitch. I got this because I have the one with the lead acid batteries and I didn't like that I would have to put water in it. The craziest reason I bought this was to take my 2 small dogs out in my neighborhood. 😆
@danielandrews9767

You're going to love it! Mine actually doesn't have the Bluetooth radio. I prefer to keep a small portable Bluetooth speaker with me. That way if someone needs to use the cart, i can keep the speaker with me! They are definitely not cheap but I've had mine around 6-7 months and the only thing I've done to it is charge it! There is a lot to be said about not having to do any maintenance. Oh, and I just recently put different tires and wheels on it as well. My old dog loves it! We flip the rear seat down and throw her bed on it. She will literally ride for hours!
@technogeekie
@technogeekie 4 года назад
@@danielandrews9767 I received it today and I love it, it puts the ez go to shame. I was riding it for a couple of hours in my neighborhood with my dogs and they loved it. I love how fast it goes and if you need to stop, you just ease off the accelerator without having to hit the brakes. A couple of people already told me thats a sweet cart 🙃. If its in people's budget I would highly recommend that they get this cart. Never have to worry about maintenance, just charge and go.

I agree about the range. I had a gas cart years ago and there was absolutely no worries about range. It held about 5 gallons of gas and if you filled it all the way up, it would last over a month of heavy daily use. I liked this one because of how quiet it was but in the real world, gas is still the way to go.

I would change out the motor and controller to a Navitas and maximize that cart. You will be going 35mph after that upgrade. Its kind of crazy to think about the amount of money you have to spend to get a new cart and they only go 19mph.

I just bought a brand new 2023 lifted 4 passenger Onward with HP Li ion. My old 48v club car would get me 2 rounds of golf without issue. My new Li ion cart shows 20% left on the battery after 18 holes. I assumed Li ion would have more range, not less. I asked the dealer about it today and he told me the battery indicators "are not very accurate". Anyone have thoughts here???
@PrimusVideosCanada
@PrimusVideosCanada Месяц назад
Good video but you said led acid batteries have a memory and that is not the case. The worst thing for a led acid battery is to be discharged completely. Charge led acid after every use. Try not going below 30%. Lithium ion batteries don't like being killed or fully charged. Best way to treat lithium ion is to keep between 10% and 90%. It's the same kind of battery as a cell phone and fully charging or fully discharging is bad for them. I think you were thinking of nickel cadmium or Nicad batteries. Those kept a memory and had to be killed but you don't see those anymore really.

This is a great video considering you did this with a phone. It looks like a very nice cart, however club car is nuts with their pricing. I priced one of these out in 2023 with the radio and some other things. It was close to $18,000. That's the definition of insanity. I'm looking seriously at the Bintelli. With lithium batteries, a glass windshield with a windshield wiper, Bluetooth stereo four speakers. It's faster at 35 to 40 mph. And has approximately a 30 to 40 mi range. And priced out at just a shade over 13 grand. You did a great job on this video. That's a great looking cart but for five grand less I can get something with more equipment on it. Plus the fact that it is truly street legal. When you buy one they actually register it and put a plate on it. That's in South Carolina however. Where they are made.

Great video. Thanks for sharing Daniel. What exactly did you have to do or have configured/tuned from a settings profile perspective to achieve 23MPH? I have a brand new 2020 ClubCar Onward 4 Lifted Lithium Ion HP cart with the upgraded 14” wheels / 23” tires and other accessories being delivered this week 7/27 est. What should I tell the dealer at time of delivery for settings? Speed code, style and push peddle braking configuration?
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 4 года назад
Hey Doug, This was the way the dealer had it configured when it was on the showroom floor. He orders all of his in "sport mode." There is a little grey area here that I'm not quite sure of. When you build your cart online, they do not ask what driving mode you want it in and since mine was already in sport mode while it was at the dealership, I'm not 100% sure who you need to tell in order to have it set up with your preferred setting. Best bet would be to let the dealership know which mode you want incase it has to be ordered from Club Car that way. I was under the impression that the dealership can make those changes by hooking up to the port under the dash with some kind of tuning device, however I cannot confirm that since mine was set up this way at time of purchase. My regenerative breaking was also set up as shown in the video. I can say however that mine is totally stock and if you are getting the HP Lithium version, yours should be just as fast as mine as long as it is set to sport mode. I guess if anything, have them watch my video where I show the regenerative breaking and the top speed and they should know how to have yours dialed in that way.

Wondering what size rims/tires those are on your cart. What size lift is it as well. Looks good!
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
I'm not sure of the size lift but I believe it is 6". If you were to order a lifted cart from CC, this is the size lift it will come with. As far as the tires and wheels, the tires are 23"x10.5"x14". These were a factory option in 2020 but I have recently looked at their website and these wheels are not offered anymore. I recently got rid of these 14" wheels (and tires) and went with a 12" wheel. These golf carts ride pretty rough if you are by yourself, without much weight in them so by going with a smaller wheel and a 23" tire on a 12" wheel, it makes for a bit of a softer ride, especially if you let a little air pressure out of the tire.

Doesn't seem like the batteries last as long as my Trojan lead acid batteries. I live in a 55+ community and our golf cart is the main mode of transportation and I drive a average of 15 miles a day and my batteries never go under 65% .
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
I think you are 100% correct. I believe the lead acid batteries will get you more range than the Lithium battery will. I have heard of several golf courses that purchased the Lithium carts, then later went back to lead acid for this very reason.

If I bought a brand new (2021) Onward Lithium cart today, can I expect the same performance/range/etc? This is impressive but I continue to hear that the lithium powerplant on the Club Cars is not up to par with the EZGO lithiums. But this review is super impressive. Thanks!
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
Your top speed will be around 19mph. Mine does 23 but that was from an ordered mistake. CC governs them at 19mph. Besides that, yes you can expect the same results. The club cars ride better than ez-go. They are still not the smoothest ride, but a major improvement over ez-go because of their suspension design. You'll be happy with the cart. Just realize that you are going to be limited by range regardless of what battery option you go with but you will literally have no maintenance and a super quiet and very powerful cart.
@bamafan1612
@bamafan1612 3 года назад
@@danielandrews9767 this is a great question and answer. I had someone tell me CC’s lithium isn’t up to par with the Samsung EZGO’s. The warranty is 2 years longer on the EZGO and you get the option to increase range. Though the CC has the aluminum frame which seems to be better and I think it’s a more polished look.
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
@@bamafan1612 So this is where you are really going to have to weigh your options. I've had an ez-go and of course the CC in the video and they are both excellent products. The batteries in both are very good products and I wouldn't worry too much about the difference in the length of warranty. These companies use "6 years" or "8 years" for marketing because it sounds like a long time, and it is a long time. The truth is, these batteries will most likely last 12-15 years. I have cheap Chinese Lithium batteries that I use with my power tools, they are already 8 years old, I abuse the heck out of them and the only one I damaged was my fault for over discharging it. I definitely like the aluminum frame and if you live near a salty environment, I would look no further than CC. However, ez-go will let you add a second battery pack. Yea, it's going to cost more, but more range is what everyone wants in their electric cart and I would have happily paid extra to double my range. Either way you go, I think you'll be happy. I think it will just come down to getting behind the wheel of them and trying them out for yourself. I really can't recommend one over the other.

Hello do you think it’s better to get the golf cart brand new or used if new what are the advantages
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
New and used both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you go with new, you get to decide what options you want, what color, etc. You can get anything offered by the company and you also get a warranty. However, this all comes at a very premium price. Buying a used cart will definitely save you some money but you may find yourself at a dealership looking to purchase any additional options that didn't come with your used cart. On the flip side, you may luck out and find a cart with a lot of options and those options generally do not add a lot of money on top of a used cart. If you go electric, make sure that the batteries are good or if they are old, that is reflected in the price of the cart. Lithium powered carts are still fairly new to the market and are definitely harder to come by. The main advantage of going with a new cart is that you are the original owner. You will know how well the cart has been maintained. You can get it set up the way you want it and it will be covered by a manufacturer warranty, just incase something isn't right. I prefer to buy "new" myself, however most golf carts are pretty well taken care of. That's one reason they tend to hold value better than ATV's and side by side vehicles.

There are currently three electric Onward models available and one gas version. The easiest way to identify the three different electric models will be to look at the decal over the rear fender. They will read as follows... "Onward" This will be the base model. It will have traditional batteries under the seat and will not have the upgraded motor or speed controller. "Onward HP" This will be the next level up over the base model. HP stands for "High Performance" It will still have traditional batteries but will have the addition of upgraded 375 amp speed controller and upgraded brushless motor. "Onward HP Li-Ion" This is the top of the line electric cart that features the upgraded motor and 375 amp speed controller along with the Lithium battery. This is the model I have and show in the video. The best part about it is it is truly maintenance free and has a lot of speed and power. You will also see some golf carts with "Special Edition" logo on them. These can come in gas or any of the three electric models mentioned. This refers to a paint color or ascetic difference that sets them apart from the standard color options. I hope this helps.

How do we get these to go faster mine tops at 19 and it’s absolutely dangerous where I live
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 Год назад
Mine was actually done by mistake. When I purchased it, it wasn't lifted so they had not programmed it to go slower. When I bought it, we put the lift on afterwards so I was able to get a little more speed out of mine. Anytime you buy one lifted from the dealership, it will come programmed to go a little slower.

I'm so surprised your range is so low! I have a gas powered ez go witch I have a gas can holder. for me gas is the only option for how I use my cart there are days when I put in 60 to 80 miles or more and with a small amount of mods I'm hitting speeds of 35 miles per hr, which comes in handy on the long flat logging roads but boy does your cart look and sound great its literally what I want mine to look like! I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. anyway you have a beautiful looking cart there man!

Loved the Video. I bought a i40L and my only issue with it is in the handling. With 4 people In the cart, it has a tendency to wonder to the left and right at higher speeds. I think it has something to do with the placement of the rear seat. The centerline if the back seat is aft if the rear axel and I think that may be causing the front end to lift. Have you performed any tests with passengers in the back seat?

This is an option that is set at the factory whenever you order your Golf Cart. The dealership may have the module that plugs in under the dash as well but you will not be able to change this yourself. You get three options and mine is on sport mode. Sport mode is the fastest mode available. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Just got my 2021 lifted lithium onward and I was told speed setting and full regen brakes, clocked at 19/20, should I ask for speed code 4 or do I need to wear this thing in to hit 23
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
So I learned after making the video that the reason mine goes 23 is because it was set to "sport mode" when it was delivered to my dealership as a "non-lifted" cart. When the dealership added the lift, they changed the tires as well from the stock size to the 23" tall tires. Since the tires are taller, the outcome was a faster golf cart. CC was not too happy to see this video. They will not sell a cart or program one to go more than 19-20 mph. It's a liability thing and I definitely get why they do it. Me getting one that goes 23 mph was not done on purpose. It just happened to be the only Lithium they had and I wanted them to lift it for me.

@@tmoneymanly My dealer could not do it, they did not have a programmer. I have looked online myself however I never found one either. I think that CC does the programming at the factory before they ship the units to the dealership. This would make sense because if a dealership was able to increase speed, most everyone would have this done and CC would loose the ability to control the speed of their units and if someone got hurt, it may come back on them in some way. I wish I would have known this when I made the video.

Thx for the video. I had 2022 EZGO S4 V72 for approximately 4 weeks and returned it as automatic braking would not activate when the batteries were 100% charged. This was a big problem for me as I have 2 miles of downhill(1100ft) to my golf course. Halfway down smoke was coming from the brakes. My question is will the CC HP LI have the same issue as with the EZGO or will I have automatic braking at 100%? Thx.
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
Wow! That is crazy! So even at 100% state of charge, you still have regen-breaking. I never had an issue on hills, not going up or down. Plenty of power going up and with the way the regenerative breaking works with this cart, you'll actually have to use the accelerator to move downhill. There is a break resistor underneath the front cowl that will be getting hot, but that is what it is there for and it burns off that electricity extremely efficiently. That said, I definitely have not had a 2 mile stretch at 1100ft gain or loss in altitude but from what I have seen, I would feel completely comfortable trying that out. I think it would perform perfectly on that. As with any battery powered cart, you still are limited by range and that climb will probably eat up a lot of battery, but that's just part of an electric cart. I am not super impressed with the range of this cart. I really feel like it should go 40-50 miles for the cost, but it will only do about half of that comfortably and that's with just me on it. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
I did not do anything additional to mine to reach 23 mph. Is yours lifted with 23" tall tires? That may be the difference. If you are running smaller tires, your top speed will be lower. When you purchase or order your cart, the dealer or Club Car will program your cart to your specific driving mode that you request. At least thats how I understand it. Mine was in sport mode when I purchased it.

@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
So just to let you know, I have been meaning to make another video about this particular golf cart. There is a reason that it accelerates so quickly and does 23mph. It should not do that and any CC Golf cart that you buy will not have this same performance. In the video, I mentioned that when I purchased this gc, it was not lifted. The dealership put the lift on for me. Long story short, the reason it is faster than it should be is it was set to "sport" mode as a nonlifted gc. When they put the 23" tires on it, that increased the top speed, and since the motor produces so much torque, it also increased the acceleration as well. CC was not too happy about them putting a lift on this cart because they do not want their carts going over 19mph. Just something to keep in mind before you go to a dealer and wonder why theirs doesn't seem as fast as this one. They are not supposed to be this fast. I hope that doesn't deture you from purchasing one. It has been an excellent gc but it was not designed by CC to be this fast.

@@randbassman I noticed the ghost discharge too, in our case it's not a problem because I just leave it plugged in and use it to drive around town. Sir, got a quick question. I have a 1500w Electric ATV 48v with 4x12v 20ah batteries in series. Do you think If i purchased one 48v 30ah lithium ion battery that it could properly run the ATV?
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
It will run it but when you change from lead acid, regardless if the batteries are AGM, FLA or gel, you will have to get a speed controller that has a setting for Lithium batteries or you will need to get a battery pack with a (BMS) Battery management system. Batteries with built in BMS are common. Just make sure you have a system that will keep you from over-discharging your Lithium battery. You don't want to turn you new battery into an expensive paperweight. Secondly, make sure you have the proper charger if you purchase this Lithium battery. Charging with an incorrect charger can be dangerous. Other than that, you should be just fine. I did a similar swap with an electric scooter and it worked just fine.
@Bennysnamehere
@Bennysnamehere 3 года назад
@@danielandrews9767 Thank you that was a great help. I was thinking of replacing the acid with ONE 48v Relion Lithium Ion battery. Any thoughts on that? Also, is there a charger you recommend? I was thinking of leaving the battery in the ATV and linking the battery with Ring clips to charge it directly to the wall outlet. Thank you again
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 3 года назад
@@Bennysnamehere You can definitely charge your battery that way and you will be just fine. It's slightly unconventional but nothing wrong with doing it that way. The battery that you are looking at from Relion is a Lithium iron phosphate battery which is a bit different from just a regular Lithium Ion battery. It's just a different chemistry. You are actually getting "in my opinion" a better quality battery with a slightly larger physical battery size. There are some advantages with using LiFePO4 batteries but just make sure you have the physical room for it in your ATV as it can be a bit bigger than Lithium Ion. You'll pay more for it but it should last a really long time and those do have a built in BMS (if you are looking at the InSight GC2 48v). As for chargers, Dakota batteries makes a good charger that will properly charge LiFePO4 batteries to 48v. What I would recommend you do is get someone on the phone with Relion and see what they recommend. That may or may not make a difference with their warranty system. They may have a particular charger that they want you to use to uphold your battery warranty.

Hi Daniel, we just purchased ours last week. We like it very much, but noticed that after we charged ours at the end of the day, the running lights are still on, but barely visible. They shut off over night but the battery will read 90% after having been at 100%. Have you had an issue like this?
@danielandrews9767
@danielandrews9767 4 года назад
I have definitely noticed this same thing. They stay on very dimly, you almost don't notice unless you really are looking closely at in while its parked in a dark area. I have not had an issue where I feel they are draining the battery. LED lights pull very little amperage even when they are turned on and many times when you see LED's that are shining softly when they are turned off, it is caused by residual power. A direct connection to a battery source is not needed for them to glow like this and most likely the soft glow is coming from a capacitor. If you feel you are loose power that quickly, i would definitely have it looked at by a technician. If you have other accessories, maybe a radio or additional lighting, that would be a more logical explanation to me than the soft glow of your LED's. Hope this helps!
