The settings for that should all be in the service manual. My understanding is that it is tightened to a certain torque, but ultimately the intention is to give a certain rack sliding force. It's hard to see in the video but sometimes that has two components - the outer lock nut and the inner adjusting screw - but in this case, maybe it is just one. Power steering is one of those black arts, that it is hard to get solid information about.
Anyone who has adjusted this steering tension nut, what controls where the nut stays? I didn't see a lock nut. So if you backed it out to loosen the steering, what keeps the nut tight? It appears as if the nut is tightened down until it stops and there is no real "adjustment". Please advise.
At the beginning of the video there is a big nut, where he used a bolt to remove it, and that big nut has a thin nut on the outside of it and it’s a lock nut. You’re supposed to remove the thin lock nut and then remove the big adjustment screw, but he just went ahead and removed both at the same time. Hope this helps even though I’m 6 months late to the party.
My 2006 DS steering wheel has about 2" of play in it. Is there a way to take this housing apart to see what is going on in there, or are the components 'pressed on' some how. I'd like to take the whole thing apart. It's a long story, but I'd like to re-use the old housing and put in all new rods and parts. Any suggestions?
Will this adjustment put pressure on the rack and wear it out faster? I am asking because I had this done only to find out later it was a bad tie rod. We fixed the tie rod. Car runs great but we never set the rack adjustment back to factory setting. Now I'm paranoid the adjustment is wearing out my rack
my rack has a clunking noise when i turn it from side to side, do you think tightening this will fix the clunk? it doesnt have any play and its definately coming from the rack and pinion.
Thanks for this very informative video. You saved me from buying a new steering rack as i could not stand the clunking. My drive is as smooth and quiet as new.
The front wheels are likely to turn on their own while driving and/or going down hill if you’re not holding on to the steering wheel tightly resulting in a catastrophic accident!!! I wouldn’t loosen it up too much. You definitely want some tension on the steering.
