It's not dying, it's changing. People aren't doing the whole club hopping night out, drinking all night anymore (some are). The opportunities are just in different places.

I’ve been clubbing and into DJ culture for the better part of the past 25 years and for me it seems the influence of social media and how many people follow a DJ has created a market of inexperienced artists who are headlining in nightclubs before they’re ready. I live in the US in a city that has a very strong electronic music presence (usually multiple shows happening every day of the week) and it seems the underground is suffering and DJs I used to see (usually from the UK/Europe) aren’t getting booked here anymore. I understand trends change and the younger generation will only see artists that they see on social media but it’s pretty disappointing going out to give this younger generation a chance and they’re way too inexperienced for the set times they’re given. It’s gotta be stressful for promoters to take a chance on an unproven artist but their hands are tied and a wave of new fans with newer artists is on the rise. Is this all just a phase for this newer generation and whenever it “gets old” are they just going to move on or is this newer crop of fans/DJs here to stay? When I go out now, these crowds feel like they’re just there because “it’s the place to be” and aren’t as interested in the history as previous generations. Just my 2¢ while I yell from the top of this hill on my rocking chair 😂

Being from a little outside of LA I can say that a majority of the clubs are packed but no ones dancing, many are trying to be too cool or only care about bottle service. However, the underground scene and the up and coming collectives are where its at! the music and crowds are completely different from the main clubs. Id say its about a 50/50 split hopefully the scene gets better because HOUSE is all about LOVE

yep, remove all the extra distractions and let people get back to just the music. Back when it was just a slightly decorated warehouse with a bar and a great sound system! The people that need all that other stuff are not necessarily there for the music.

No. I don't think it's dying. I think there's an increase in more underground and local stuff. I think that bottle service clubs, bars, and other environments where the main focus isn't dancing are dying. I've been going out to a lot of events through several collectives I belong to and it's not massive numbers but the DJs and the music are amazing. Plus I attended Movement and Tec-Troit - - both in Detroit - - and they were well attended.

I agree. The club scene slowly turned from a basic, strictly dance oriented vibe into a "where to be seen", "look at me", "Ima VIP", "bottle service" all these little thing for the club to make more money and for the clubber to show off. It just got away from being strictly dance oriented with a side hustle of selling drink and getting laid :)

Half the problem is the number of people djing, anyone can grab a controller and start mixing, back in the 90s you needed turntables, learn to beat match, buy vinyl… this would be one in 10 of your mates, now all 10 have a controller. Phones should be banned for sure!!! My son said he wished he could go out in the 90s..

Algorithms have become incredibly sophisticated in understanding user preferences, often surpassing the capabilities of human DJs

Festival culture is also taking a hit. Festivals have become very expensive to visit. Mass lay off's are already taking place at the large festival organizations. Also, the competition between festivals is fierce. There are just too many of them. In the end it boils down to expendable income. Going out has become too expensive, for many, in relation to the decreased expendable income.

Tuuuunes in the selection were super grooovay!! 🙌 I started clubbing to dance..Not just for an hour but the journey and getting lost in the story the dj was telling over hours....I then started Djing to play the music I enjoy and be able to share it and dance to it too, in the hope people would have as awesome a time as well.. its hard to find a place where people go to clubs to dance and appreciate Dj sets, for all the reasons from phones to drug culture changing ...Also, it doesn't help that the kinds of festivals that 'introduce' people to dance music, are the ones that have propagated the 1 hour set... so to go to a club and appreciate a set of a few hours becomes a challenge... There are still amazing events with Dj's playing magical long sets but that's not as common at clubs....that's my humble opinion. Great podcast as always. Appreciated.

I see "conscious" clubbing/dancing grow. People going for the dance and connection. Like Ecstatic Dance. I also organise bare-feet dance parties, drug and alcohol use is minimal, a lot safer for females and less shit for organisers to deal with. Hardest thing is finding venues for a reasonable price, cause bar income is pretty low, but in contrast we leave the venue cleaner than when we came in...

And you know I have one more thing to say just for the records they shouldn't even allow a channel like You on the station simply because who wants to know the inner makings of a DJ they can learn that in school if they're that desperate okay 👍🍁

Analyzing it all and trying to figure it all out will kill it. Podcasting and You tubing about DJing makes it looks shit. if music is corporate it just dies. Rebel, create and be different. Create a scene and stay afloat. Things are going to change, I was there in the late 80s 90s DJing and it was fresh. Thats when Djing became a big thing. I quit when I was making the most money in the middle east. It was sterile and dull, plus I was suffering from Alcohol and drug effects. I do feel something new is on the horizon, it does need to be feral and independent . James Hype I admire for his mixing and ability, I feel he plays to empty crowds wanting to watch. Its a shame for good Dj's to deal with wannabe crowds. The rebellion will happen and music will be part of it. Talking about DJing must die..... lol
