Her lines were small but MIGHTY! Got the absolute maximum out every line and scene and, without doubt, my all time favorite female comedian of the silver screen. She was the true Queen of giggles. RIP
Its not really improve maydlin was fery mad at the production schedule and was unaware the camwra was rolling had that melt down and it had to be left in
I love that Madeline Kahn improvised the "Flames on the side of my face" monologue, causing Christopher Lloyd and Martin Mull to look around at her perplexed, wondering who gave her that dialogue. Also, rest in Peace, Martin Mull, Eileen Brennan and Madeline Kahn.
@trinag Whoops sorry, this was supposed to be a standalone thing, not a reply to your's. Guess I fat fingered my phone a little. Gotta admit the most surprising part of this watch was hearing you correctly. You actually WANT to play "The Friend Breaker" a.k.a. Settlers of Catan. I've watched fist fights break out from that one with people who play civil games of Monopoly. lol. Well to each their own I guess. Glad you liked this flick.
@@LordVolkovhe also had to go to the er or a doctor right after performing the recaps I think due to dehydration (but don't quote me on the dehydration part).
Funniest shot in the whole movie, for my money, is him on the floor after he's fallen out of the freezer. His eyes get wide and he's talking with his hands in a really hilarious way. "By now, she was dead..." 😂
When I first watched Clue, I couldn't believe it had come out in the same year as Back to the Future, Christopher Lloyd looks and acts so different! He's amazing, I love him
I don't think they could have had a more PERFECT cast, which is one of the biggest reasons this movie works so well. True classic I grew up with and is just an amazing fun watch each and every time. 😊
"How many husbands have you had?" "Mine, or other women's?" Makes me howl with laughter every time. Also - Clue drinking game - you have to take a shot every time Mr Green says "I didn't do it!"
Martin Mull (Col Mustard) passed away just about 10 days ago.. Great cast of great performers, more so than actors.. And a great script to let them all shine.. Fun movie..
Murder by Death is the spiritual ancestor of this movie, Featuring parodies of all the classic mysteries sleuths, from Poirot and miss Marple to Sam spade, all stuck in a locked castle trying to solve an impossible murder mystery!
The Singing Telegram girl was, Jane Wiedlin. Guitar player of the Go-Go's Mr Boddy was, Lee Ving. Singer for the notoriously offensive punk band, "Fear."
ABSOLUTE FAVORITE movie of ALL time! Such a quotable film with wonderful quotes and one-liners. My favorite interaction is: The Chief: Good evening. Have you ever given any thought to the kingdom of Heaven? Mrs. Peacock: What!? The Chief: Repent. The kingdom of heaven IS at hand. Miss Scarlet: You ain't just whistlin' Dixie. The Chief: Armageddon is almost upon us. Professor Plum: I got news for you - it's already here! Mrs. Peacock: Go away! The Chief: But your souls are in danger! Mrs. Peacock: Our lives our in danger, you beatnik! or Professor Plum: What are you afraid of? A fate worse than death? Mrs. Peacock: No, just death. Isn't that enough?
If you don't like this movie, we can't be friends. As for another comedy murder mystery, "Murder by Death" (1976). I wouldn't be surprised if "Clue" was inspired by it.
@@shainewhite2781 Three wonderful comedians who have sadly passed , they just added to an amazing ensemble what a great mystery caper , And i'm glad they included all three endings 😀 Thrilled to finally see this laughing and sleuthing along the way with JEN . 😄 CHEERS.
I’ll watch Clue anytime, anywhere with anyone- I never get tired of it! We lost Colonel Mustard last month. RIP Martin Mull. I suggest Mr Mom if it hasn’t been watched already. He was great in it.
A movie that has a very similar feel that I highly recommend is "Noises Off", 1992, which is based off a play and is STAGED as a play in three acts: first the rehearsal for the play, then a performance of the play from the view of the audience, and finally as a performance as seen from backstage. It stars Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, Michael Caine, Carol Burnett and Nicollette Sheridan, among others. It's a glorious farce and funny as hell.
Close. Act One is the rehearsal, Act Two is backstage when we see drama starting to erupt, Act Three is the absolutely terrible performance from the audience view. And it’s good to know I’m not the only person who thinks of that film whenever Clue comes up! 😊
My local theater did a stage version of Noises Off. My brother in law is the tech director and he drew up the set/stage in SketchUp to see if it would fit. He figured out that he could in fact just barely make it and rotate the set as a whole to get the front/back aspect of the show. It worked great. At intermission the theme from 2001 played while the stage crew rotated the one piece set. For the movie, the cast is *amazing* and definitely in similar humorous vein as Clue.
Another movie in the same vein as this one is "Murder By Death". It bombed in the theaters, but I have always loved that movie. Tons of great stars in it, like this one, and also involving a murder that takes place in a mansion/castle. As you may have heard, "Clue" was filmed with multiple different endings and you never know which one your theater was going to get. When they released it on home video they gave us all of them rolled into one!
Every theatre showing the movie noted which ending (A,B, or C) was being screened on the poster. But it was very small print and not widely publicized.
"Tim Curry! Awesome!!!" Tim carries this film on his back. The entire third act is him doing a solo recap of the first two acts, with a manic madcap energy that shows through the sweat on his brow by the finale 🥵 It's a shame Tim has fallen on poor health since his stroke, and we wish him only the best. If you haven't seen Rocky Horror Picture Show, throw it on a musical list. Also, Ridley Scott's Legend, with Tom Cruise - look for the version with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack for my preferred cut. Tim is the best part of both, with captivating and magnetic performances 🤩
As a screenwriter, I have to give complete respect to the writers for the fact that this script allows for three different endings that all are legit and work out.
This movie takes place in the 1950's so he was an FBI agent first. He was working undercover in Spinal Tap investigating the mysterious deaths of the drummers.
31:42 - NINE YEARS EARLIER... ' MURDER BY DEATH' is a 1976 American comedy mystery film directed by Robert Moore and written by Neil Simon. Stars include Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, David Niven, Peter Sellers, and Maggie Smith.
@DrummingWriterTrekfan84 , depends on the men. The men I dates didn’t last past 4 months! My wife has lasted nearly nine years… and put a ring on it… just one example. 🤣
If you liked this, you have got to watch "Murder By Death". It is a Neil Simon comedy where everyone invited to dinner is a famous detective. Absolutely hilarious.
Lee Ving is better known for being the frontman (and only remaining original member) of the band FEAR. He started using that name in the late 1960s, when he was playing with blues artists.
Between Tim Curry, Lee Ving, Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go's) and Michael McKean (Spinal Tap), this movie has bona fide rock star cred. Add Howard Hesseman in there for good measure (an actual rock station DJ in his younger days, as well as playing Dr. Johnny Fever on WKRP). 🤟🎶
@@samzilla1281 To be honest, I had to look it up to make sure. I knew it was at least since the mid-70s (when he started playing with metal bands, before forming FEAR), though, if not further back.
Can't believe this hasn't won a poll sooner, this feels right in your wheelhouse. A murder mystery but whimsical and funny, great music, you've even mentioned loving board games in the past too if I'm not mistaken.
Great movie! You should also consider these great murder mysteries: Murder by Death, Murder on the Orient Express, Dial "M" for Murder, and Death on the Nile.
I love Jen's reaction to this. I love goofy comedies like this and she clearly gets it. One of the funniest parts is Mr. Green (Michael McKeen) and goofy smile with the cop. "I didn't know it was THAT free." LMAO.
Fun fact at 16:33: there is a photograph of Mr. Green (Michael McKean) with his glasses on leaving a government building and holding a briefcase, proving he was undercover all along. As for your request for movies like this, Murder By Death. A murder-mystery-comedy set in a country house full of famous fictional sleuths (Hercule Poirot, Sam Spade, etc). Also stars Eileen Brennan, who’s just played Mrs. Peacock.
When I was on Twitter (now X), I followed Michael McKean (Mr Green) I once told him how much I loved this movie. I also said it looked like a fun cast. He replied "Best lunches ever." I've had mad respect for him since.
The film rolls out like a play and you seem to be enjoying it. There's a film called 'Noises Off' that takes place as a play and you're watching it from the audience. It's frenetic, very fast paced. I'm pretty sure you'll love it. Madeline Kahn is hysterical in 'Blazing Saddles' another Mel Brooks classic.
One of the reasons (besides the obvious ones) that the final/third ending is best is because the whole “everybody did it” idea is a very clever homage to the immortal Agatha Christie, her work, and specifically the ending of one of her most famous stories. The idea plays out VERY differently in the original Christie story but the reference is pretty clearly intended in the ending of this movie. I’m purposely not spoiling the Christie story or even naming it in case Jen ever gets around to watching any of the movie adaptation of her books.
For another superb comedy murder mystery, might I recommend the movie " Murder By Death " starring Peter Sellers, David Niven, Maggie Smith, James Coco and Peter Falk.
Several years ago, my local Community Little Theater did this play, and at intermission the audience voted on which ending to use. Even the actors didn't know which ending they'd be performing each show.
Miss Scarlett is Leslie Ann Warren she’s been in a lot of movies. Back in the 1960s (or1970) she was in Rogers and Hamersteins “Cinderella “! She was a beautiful Cinderella!!!
Carrie Fisher was originally set to play "Miss Scarlett", however, she ended up going into drug rehab so the role went to Warren. And this was Eileen Brennan's first role since she had recently just left a rehab center.
She was in a movie with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. She did a role on a series about Witness Protection calles 'In Plain Sight' as the mother of a US Deputy Marshal.
What are you doing? Just checking. Everything fine? Yup, two corpses, everything's fine. This is my all time favorite movie. I've watched it so much I can practically quote it.
in high school, we did Clue, I auditioned for Miss Scarlet, but everyone said I had to be Yvette (LOL) so I was, & was the understudy for Miss Scarlet, but I got to wear a custom-made $500 maid outfit that was just like in the movie ...wish I could have kept it haha hard to believe everyone hasn't seen this!
This was by far one of my favorite films to watch as a kid. It is still hilarious. I love the game and I credit this film for getting me interested in older music.
14:43 ~ Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn) also played Lili Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles "They're always coming and going And going and coming And always too soon"
"Cluedo, known as Clue in North America, is a murder mystery game for three to six players that was devised in 1943 by British board game designer Anthony E. Pratt. The game was first manufactured by Waddingtons in the United Kingdom in 1949"
Ah my high school days. My best friends played Wadsworth and Colonel Mustard. I got to be the Evangelist/Lead Agent. 7:38 it was, remember this was 1954.
This is such a fun movie. The wordplay from Wadsworth is great. And the reenactment scene. I love his little smile. I can't think of anyone else who could have pulled this off other than Tim Curry. Thanks for watching this and sharing. "I hope it's something at the end that makes sense ..." Well, about that.😂
I grew up watching this movie. I was born in 1985. We watched this on repeat and memorized it word for word. So much fun. I actually understand more of the jokes now that i’m an adult. I still loved it as a kid, though
Mr Boddy was played by Lee Ving, singer of the hardcore band, Fear. Also acted in Streets of Fire. The singing telegram girl was played by Jane wiedlin, guitarist of the band, The Go-Gos. Also starred in Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure as Joan of Arc
In addition to Young Frankenstein, you've also seen Madeline Kahn (Mrs. White) on this channel in "Blazing Saddles" as Lily Von Shtupp. It's okay if you forgot, as you've watched quite a bit on here since then.🙂
When it came out there were 3 endings yes . They were advertised on the Maques as Clue A , or Clue B or Clue C. Another point is How many big game stars in this movie Eileen Brennan was on a big show called Private Benjimine ( it was based off of a movie) Tim- So many movies Rock Horror, Annie, Legend etc. Madeline Kahn- wow Young Frankenstein, History of the world etc. Christopher Loyd- Back to the Future , Roger Rabit, the Addams Family. Michael McKean- Lovern and Shirly , Earth girls are easy, this is Spinal tap, Matin Mull- had a show called Fernwood tonight. Lesley Ann Waren -Victor Victoria ,, Life Stinks, And Jane Wiedlin from the Gogos was the singing telegram girl. Just an amazing cast.
This made my night. Thank you for doing this reaction. I love this movie. My family had the DVD that randomly play different endings, thus, it never got old. I think another mystery comedy is Murder by Death, but there are some others albeit the ones I can think of are black and white older movies. Arsenic and Old Lace. (A great one for Halloween since it is set at that time.) The Thin Man movies. (There are many of them.) And others, many others that I can't seem to remember at the moment.
Love 'Arsenic & Old Lace'. One of my all time favorites. Great movie that I would Highly recommend For 'Murder by Death' . The movies, &/or characters, she would need to watch/know before watching it re The Thin Man movies. I think there are 6, but just the first, maybe second movies are needed to get/understand the characters Miss Marple & Hercule Poirot. Characters from Agatha Christy Charlie Chan is a fictional Honolulu police detective created by author Earl Derr Biggers for a series of mystery novels. The character is Extreme ethnic misrepresentation Sam Spade, fictional character, the quintessential hard-boiled private detective, the protagonist of a novel (The Maltese Falcon, 1930) and several short stories by Dashiell Hammett.
Clue is a fictionalized version of the board game. It has many features from this game, such as the characters and colors of the pawns, as well as the pawns standing next to each other go beyond the board, so here they also have a problem when they go through the door together. In cinemas, each of the three endings was played randomly so that people would not know which one was true.
In 1991 Sylvester Stallone made a movie called Oscar that is very much like this one. No murders. More of a who's who? A lot of people all confused and running around. I think you'll like it. Marisa Tomei, possibly first movie, small role. Also Joey Travolta, John's brother. He plays ACE. One of Sylvester Stallone main guys. Tim Curry is in this also. Have you ever seen Johnny Dangerously? It stars Michael Keaton and a cast of characters. It's from 1984. It's the same type of humor but not all running around and confusion. Just dry, bizarre humor. A lot of memorable lines.
A big YES! to both movies. I mention Oscar in a bunch of first time movie reviewers. Glad to see someone else recognize an underrated movie that doesn't get much recognition. It's got that 30's screwball comedy vibe. And of course, Johnny Dangerously was a lot of fun, especially the more you know about 1930's gangster movies.
Anyone who loved this madcap murder mystery should check out NOISES OFF! led by Carol Burnett, Michael Caine, Christopher Reeves, John Ritter and more. I own it and Clue on DVD
I bow my head and bend my knee to the great comic genius that was Ms. Madeline Kahn. She was brilliant in everything she did. A true talent, gone too soon.
This flick is such quintessentially Jen fare that I'd actually created a false memory of you having already watched and reacted to it years ago 😄 So glad you finally got to make it a reality!
"Would you be kind enough to wait in the um, in, in the, eh, mm, er, library," is one of my most favourite lines in anything. And, yes, there have been quite a few stage productions of this movie.
A BIG thank you to whoever suggested this movie for Jen to react to! Before *_Scott Pilgrim vs. The World_* came out (and later on *_Deadpool_* ) this was my favorite movie of all time! (Literally watched it hundreds of times!) 😁👍
Love that you had such a blast watching this. One of my favorite comedies and simply a perfect adaptation of something as strange to adapt as a board game. About the tape recording being in being inadmissible in court, it varies from state to state how many parties have to agree to being recorded from both sides or just from one side. If it was set in a two party consent state then everyone would need to agree. California, Florida, and Pennsylvania are two party so if it was set in PA then it wouldn't be admissable.
Another movie with Tim Curry in it that I think you'd really enjoy is a Sylvester Stallone comedy, "Oscar". It has a bunch of the kind of stuff that you love in movies in it. And it has the advantage of being one that not many other reactors (if any) have reacted to. I highly recommend it for you.
Another movie from the 70’s is Murder By Death. It stars Peter Sellers, Peter Falk, David Niven, Alec Guiness, and a few others. It’s also a comedy. There are many comedy murder mysteries usually in the 30’s-50’s.
There actually is a play version a friend of mine was in much. They shuffled up and selected the cards like the game and left them on stage to reveal at the end of the play. The person who drew the cards is the only one who knew and their dialog changes, which reveals to the actors which path was selected.
Since you are a fan of the board game, you should know there exists a reverse version of Clue called Kill Dr. Lucky, where players compete in getting the Doctor alone so they can end him.
1:15 - "Look at this sexy maid outfit. Imagine actually though, like cleaning in that, like cleaning a bathroom in that outfit." - Well, now I'm imagining SOMEONE cleaning in that outfit. ;) 20:10 - "This is making me want to play the board game so bad. Such a cool board game. Is there like a version of it online that I could play? - Yes, there are various online versions of Clue, both single-player and multiplayer. Some are apps, some are for consoles and computers. Also, in the past, versions of Clue have been released for various retro consoles and computers. I've never played Clue myself. I was always under the impression that you collected actual clues, then I once read a copy of the rules and learned that it was just a process of elimination. I was disappointed. My problem with the multiple endings is that it's impossible for anyone to truly figure it out. No matter how carefully you watch and piece together the events, it's all just a crapshoot whether your guess will be correct or not.
@@Fred-vy1hm Jumanji is not a real game. There's Ouija, though it's not really a game, and Dungeons and Dragons, though not really a board game. And there's a stage musical called Chess.
The singing telegram girl was played by Jane Wiedlin. Jane is a founding member, rhythm guitarist, and backup vocalist for the Go-Gos. You have seen her previously as Joan of Arc in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
