Material Deconstruction is about creative experimentations in the digital era. With access to an abundant wealth of both physical & digital resources, the possibilities are endless.
In episode one of the Material Deconstruction series, I cluelessly attempt to show off hex editing and glitching of this Mario game in the FCEUX Emulator.

This is like corrupting a game but you cause the byte changes yourself

This is Mario Maker, but you change the blocks and stuff by replacing characters.

I actually found out that entering b in lowercase gives you a star question block where you placed it

this is how i learn. By watching videos like this! I will make a game so quick with just one of these instead of the other ones that don't think outside the box. I can't believe this is one of the only videos that teaches coding like this. With a code editor, I've always wanted to throw my computer out of a building, but this is simple with no stress. I like using cheat codes on games and this is so cool to do.

I'm glad you liked it! I agree that the best way to learn is through play and experimentation. Learning should be a fun process. Sometimes it's okay to learn things in bits and pieces, a little out of order. Eventually, knowledge will come together. :)

Game is a graphical version of a Hex Code. I knew from the start that we have to break the game to understand its working.

dope. is there a guide showing which characters are what blocks?

Not that I know of. Seems the only way you can figure out blocks is either by using random characters, or finding a level that uses different blocks.

@@CrewFroebel Not true at all. Look up the RAM map and sprite layout tables for this game. This stuff has been documented for years. Typing with ASCII limits yourself to the values 32-190ish depending on your keyboard -- you should be editing the hex values directly. Also 42/11 did this first on their channel a month prior to you and it's much funnier -- also you said this was the first in a series but there are no other games you've done since.

@@NillKitty, why the unnecessary aggression? I attempted to create an informative video to help people get started with emulator experimentation. I never stated I was an expert in the matter.
