What you're hearing in the middle of this song is called "go-go" and it's native to Washington, DC (hence the title of the song). You won't really hear it anywhere else. It's generally not associated with this style of music, which is what makes this song unique. But Clutch are from the DC 'burbs and they reference the area relatively frequently in their songs. Most of Neil Fallon's lyrics are quite esoteric if they mean anything at all, so it's easy to miss them, but if you grew up in the Maryland suburbs you'll catch a local reference every now and then.

Clutch are great. Seen them a couple of times. Normally everyone at a gig wears black. Clutch shows, half the audience will be in checked shirts and baseball caps. Serious groove. The entire Earth Rocker album needs to be played. Loud. :)
I was at this show at the 9:30 club in DC....I also caught another 9:30 club show on new years a couple years back. They played this song during the ball drop and rode the go-go cowbell breakdown while Neil did a countdown on the mic.....then balloons dropped all over the crowd and a gnarly drumfill brought the song back. That crowd was ALIVE AND THERE FOR IT
Oh I should also add that back in '98 my very first band played our very first show at the White Rabbit in San Antonio and Clutch, Ultraspank, Stuck Mojo and Sevendust were the headliners. We were obviously the 2nd stage band being a bunch of rookies, but it was awesome to share the same night we these guys.
Clutch is my favorite band. I've seen them live 26 times, have a closet full of their merch, and have a half sleeve of the Blast Tyrant album artwork on my left forearm. They're the reason I own an SG and use Orange amps.
Cool! I used to live in Portsmouth VA and saw them regularly from the late 90's until 2017. Neil is one of the nicest stars you'll meet. Takes time to speak with everyone and has given back to Portsmouth and the Hampton Roads area for many years. He's a normal cat

I was there when the Bassist broke the big string on the Bass, and the Slayer Bassist came out to let us know how hard that is. Neil sings on Bladecatcher when they play with Mastadon.

Alright, I went thru half the comments and I have not seen anyone talking about the true beat of D.C!! That beat you hear is the GOGO beat. A sound created d.c! As most of us know clutch was formed during the peak of gogo. The founding members are from Maryland and gogo was the beat of that Era. Clutch has been a staple of the DMV for a very long time and when they drop that beat we all "go hard"!
Yes Clutch!! The pride of D.C. the drummer and lead singer are both playing cowbell on this. That rhythm is called the Go Go beat, GO GO is a form of funk music that originated in D C.
I've been a fan for almost 2 decades since a friend introduced them to me. I love the eclectic sounds of blues, soul and rock they fuse together. Incredible musicianship
