Andrew 1.5 is a crazy score for this bottle my friend, it is your score my friend so you are entitled to it, i did notice that it is a neck pour, i do hope that you have had a second pour of this dram...my opinion of this whisky is that it is intensely complex and some get it and some do not, this whisky is from what is regarded as one of thee best distilleries in Scotland and it has everything it is sweet/dry spicy, herbal, tropical, waxy,oily,fresh fruit,dry vanilla,toffee, sage,ginger,salty,briney, banana,apricot, apple, mineral chalky notes, please tell me you have gone back and tried it again....but it is one of those malts, you either love it or you do not....great show guys keep up the great work and remember The Pleasure is in the Sharing....

Apparently, Andrew's got a lot left to learn... lol. Spicy Highland Malt: either you get them or you don't! Actually that's more seriously meant than it might seem. Sat together with a friend this evening and we tried one of his favs, a 1988 Duncan Taylor Glen Garioch. Straight ex-Bourbon cask, a bit of smoke and a whole lot of Highland spiciness and herbs (don't be mislead btw, Dalmore is not a good representative of the Highland style... ;-). Back to the story: when he opened the Glen Garioch a couple of years ago among shrewd brothers of malt, half of them thought it to be brilliant, the other half were confused and disappointed. So it's true to a degree also with Clynelish 14: either you love it or it does not work for you. I for once love the style (though can't speak for the specific Clynelish in question, it's been a while...), it hides much of its complexity in alleged simplicity and its savory note is often mistaken for alcohol burn. So, Andrew, think of intense peat smoke or strong sherry flavors of distractors to mask flaws in the distillate. Highland style malt kinda gives you the raw truth of what's there, and if you get over the missing cover of smoke and sherry you will find a sexy malt, indeed. I have all the hope for you. ;-)

+Hogibaer Thanks for the true perspective. I had not considered the fact that you can cover a sub par new make with heavy flavored casking. That is why we love the comments. They help us learn together. Can't wait to meet you and share a glass. ~Andrew

Said as “Clyne Lish”. This distillery is about 8 miles from where I live. My favourite tipple and rarely discounted. Brora, Sutherland, about 70 miles north of Inverness in the depths of the Highlands on the North East coast.

I know that you guys reviewed the Springbank 10 yr early on in your reviewing. I think you really need to pick up a Springbank 12 yr Cask strength and review that. It is truly a dram that you will have on your bar the rest of your life. It's a great dram!!!! Don't cheat yourself. Try it. I stand 110% behind this one. Cheers brothers !!!

Clynelish 14yo has been one of my early favorites for its unique style. I had a couple Broras before prices got crazy, completely different profile with a farmy smoke and candle wax, kinda love/hate malt. There's a few cask strength IB's of the Clynelish from Signatory and Berry Bros that are interesting too. Being a coastal Highland it shares some similarities with Old Pulteney, Glenmorangie, Balblair, maybe even Scapa if there was a regional style to it.

Great info Jimidrammer! First thanks for sharing that, it is in line with what we're trying to accomplish (educate...ourselves and anyone and everyone willing). So how long ago did you have the Broras?~Mark
@jimidrammer4187
@jimidrammer4187 7 лет назад
I got the Broras in 2005-06 when I first got into Scotch. A 1982-1995 Brora 13yo Cadenhead’s C/S @ 59% bottling I found in a Brown Derby store in Springfield Missouri for $69, I bought 4. They were dusty bottles that had probably sat there for a decade. The other was a 1981-2003 Brora 21yo Signatory from their Unchillfiltered Collection @ 46% was a little over $100. These days Bruichladdich kinda fills that profile with some of their experiments if you like that taste.

@everwind5691
@everwind5691 5 лет назад
This whisky is the most complex whisky I have ever tasted. Andrew, I am amazed at your notes. I think Ralfy said it best when he said this is not a whisky for the inexperienced and feint of heart. Just so much going on. I think this whisky does need water to help the pallet sort out all the fruit, waxy, floral, minty, medicinal notes. I am still trying to sort out all the flavors. I am not sure this would ever be a standard go-to whisky, but boy if you want an experience and a rainbow of flavors from sweet to bitter and everything in-between, this is the dram. I can see why this whisky is considered a hallmark scotch whisky.

S4D, super clear picture guys. This was one of my first bottles in 2015. I rated it a 85/100.. Looks like Andrew shorted Mark on his pour. :>( Drew tilt the glass when you pour to avoid spilling.:>) I've had tastings like Andrew on bottles that I expected more from and they fell short. Revisit the bottle at another time and see if it tastes different. Great review.

First problem boys you should never open a bottle and try it right away. The problem here is that a neck pour never tells you how good a product it. It has been closed up for 14 yrs and needs time to open. I love this product but it needs time to open cheers

Love Clynelish. There are some cracking independent bottles out there and Compass Box use it as the base for most of their bottles. I always get a waxy, burning candle taste. I have a small sample of a 29 year old cask strength Clynelish tucked away. Lovely. Cheers.

@jackasswhiskyandpintobeans9344
To each his own, but it seems odd or even maybe useless to say you don't like a Non Islay malt because it isn't an Islay. The guy in the blue w/o hat has it right(at least in my way of thinking), judge on intrinsic qualities. Glasser heavily uses this in his blends.

Alright lads? I just found your channel watching your review of the Offerman Lagavulin. I noticed the Clynelish bottle in the background, and so I thought I'd search for your review of Clynelish. I'm sure by now, you've realised, that it's pronounced klyne-leesh. One of my favourite distilleries.

@@Scotch4Dummies Not surprised. A lot of our pronunciation of words in Scotland are based on Gaelic (indeed many distillery names are Gaelic), and so particularly unusual to regular English speakers. I should correct my original post by highlighting the stress on the second syllable, it is pronounced klyne-LEESH. If you want, I'm sure I can figure out a way to send an audio file to you. Other than that, keep up the good work. Always great to watch people from around the world enjoy our whisky!

Last glass I had of this, actually, I took a bite of dark high % cocoa chocolate, then the next sip tasted entirely differently... from that thick full bodied toffee, to bitter green apple. Love that in the time it has taken me to slowly work through the bottle, I'm still getting different things out of it. Heard mixed reviews from bottling to bottling though...

Hey guys - I'd like to be here at 10PM, but of course it depends a little on what the wife wants to do, right? heheh... Anyway, I am a lot like Andrew, a definite smoky peat-head. My "go to" this week is just a flat Laphroaig 10. Andrew, how does this compare to a Glenlivet 12? Is it a lot different than a speyside? I haven't tried a highland yet, and I was nervous about the Glen, but I did enjoy that one. Just curious on what you DO like a lot out side of our beloved Islay?

Telex Thanks for commenting. I think I prefer the Glenlivet 12 over this bottle based on my review here. I will need to try this bottle again to learn to appreciate the floral, herbiness, but on this night it was not feeling it. I enjoy MANY non-Islay scotches. Check out my top ten videos in the playlists. Rich flavors, heavy peat, and even a really good sherry cask. I even like those that tend to change flavors over time. ~Andrew

I usually do align more with the smoke and peat but I also enjoy the coastal highlanders like Oban with some of the sweet / spice mixed in with the saltiness. I know Clynelish is a component of the Johnnie Walker lineup which I also enjoy. If I can get it at a decent price I may give it a try!

Were all different. I have to thumb down this video. This Clynelish 14 is among my favourite below $100 bottles from Highland. Why the heck talk about smoke and peat in a Highland ? You also want to have jasmine taste in your coffee ? I’d rate it a solid 93/100. What I would call an EXCELLENT SCOTCH. And I also love peated Islay whiskies. Cheers, Claus from Denmark

There is a point at which audacity turns to disservice and disservice is followed by questionable activity. You are in luck that YT is a place where the unsolicited requires no proof. I’d “accept” your point had you changed your name to: “Scotch By 4 Dummies” or otherwise dropped the 4 and changed it to the word by. As is it only makes it seem that you are experts offering advice for (4) dummies (novices). Either way, being unfamiliar with one of the most famous and influential distilleries in the history of the world while at the same time making videos about whisky in a channel dedicated to whisky is at very least misleading. To me this seems a disservice. Since you say you’ve since educated yourselves I suppose I’ll take your word for it. This is perhaps not “illegal” but if I were to create a channel called “medicine 4 dummies” and offered “medical advice” while at the same time admitting I haven’t heard of the term - anatomy (the equivalent of never hearing of Clynelish) I reckon that channel would get banned quickly and I’d likely find myself in real trouble. I’m not even going to go into the notes themselves, which were, quite ridiculous. I’ll just take your word that you’ve since put the effort and have educated yourselves further.
