Good to know. I'll have to do this come spring time or if I tear the rigs apart any sooner. Looking forward to unleashing them on some kapow coins in a month or two when the temps drop a little more
Nice, and yeah, these things are Kawpow monsters. The reverse airflow definitely helps get more headroom on high wattage algos like kawpow. Can easily get 62+ MH @ around 250w
Thank you for this. We’ve had a few 90° days here lately, and card temps were spiking. I have the same cards and case, and I had just seen someone mentioned that Ovalbore had recommended reversing the fans, and now I see your video. I went out to my garage and made the change in fan direction and taped off the stray openings, and the result is a very noticeable dip in temperatures.
@CMC dude thanks for the fan direction idea .. I got custom 6pin PCIe to 8pin EPS cables from TVM so I do not need to put the fans on the outside, I am getting all low 60’s high 50’s ..
@@motorcityminer yeah TVM rocks .. but yeah try to work out a deal from him, i know it cost more than buying both adapters if you don’t already have the cables, however just having a clean direct from the PSU PCB directly to the GPU with no adapters, and the ability to fit cleanly without putting the fans on the outside is a plus too.. buy yeah you already got everything working perfectly so if you really going to do it you can do it slowly.
yeah, will definitely be over time. but want the 16G wire TVM uses so I can really push these cards on Kawpow as well. For pretty much all other algos, the 18G wires I got are fine but these cards are Kawpow beasts.
If you havent changed the thermal paste, do it! Every one that I got had the paste absolutely baked! I installed mx-6 thermal paste and much better now. I use (2) 40mmx40mm fans 13000rpm for each card in an open frame rig.
Yeah these cards are pretty old and were run hard so not to surprised on the paste situation. Will def have to replace for higher wattage algos. And nice mod to add active cooling so it works in open air rig!
Same, but I have also found w/ the proper tuning, the CMP vBIOS versions can hit the same performance on most algos. There are a few exceptions where I wasn't able to achieve the same efficiency but so far I have been able to hit the same max hashrates on both vBIOS for every algo. More content to come.
I used 3x140 fans in the back to suck air out (push/pull) similar temps to yours now, will try your method to see if cooling is matched so I cam save some power.
@@motorcityminer Your method is better. Both core temps is between 3 and 8 degrees lower, depending on a gpu. Your method also requires only 4 fans whereas I had 7. Also, for my 2nd rig, I put in two 140mm fans (with 120 to 140 adapter) - only 3 fit, so I decided to do 2 140mm in the middle and 2 120mm on the outer edges, this seems to improve both core/mem marginally by 2 to 3 degrees. The coolest 100-210 between two rigs on xelis is 51c/58m (140mm rig), the worst is 52c/64m (120mm rig). Cheers!
@motorcityminer Thank you. This info helped me a lot, Im doing this step by step. Just a question can you let me know where can I buy those dual 8 pin PCI-E, because those small X12 only come with single 8 pin ends. Thanks
I would hit up the @TheVeteranMiner (theveteranminer.com). He uses 16 awg cables which are optimal for high powered cards like these, especially if you are thinking of running kawpow @ 200w+ on these.
Nice! How did you manage to power 12 of them, there are not enough power output plugs? I used 3 per 2 cards to get in 10 max, just to make sure my cables dont burn out if the gpu goes tdp. Did you use 1:3 splitter for the mobo?
I replaced the PCIE cables with 16awg and used PCIE splitters 1 one of the pcsb octo x12's. Just got 12 more and going to explore options. Not sure I would mine kapow on these
this arrived just in time! Many thanks Just got 12 more delivered today which will be packed into a mini x12. For the PCIE did you use a custom cable to connect both connectors? Or a splitter
Nice! I have 16 gauge dual 6+2 pin cables for each card atm. The only algo I have found that really would warrant even better cables is running kawpow max out on these. Hoping to get into more algo specific content on these in the future.
@@motorcityminer confirmed reverse fans cool these far better. Went from needing 80-90% fans down to 65% and cards are running about 5-10 C lower. Thank you
@motorcityminer I have a mini 12 from PCSP on the way, I believe it only has one 6+2 cable per card. Would I need to replace the wiring to accommodate for two 6+2 per card?
right now, XelisV2 ~ 34.6 KH @ 95-115w using --lock-cclock 985 --mclock 150 --pl 120. as @ruskyscryptocave said though, power will fluctuate consistently, but most my cards are averaging 108w
you should be able to change the memory on either BIOS for these cards. you may have to do within the command line of the miner rather than within HiveOS overclocking though.
i just completed payment for one of these cards on ebay from a diffrent seller then the respecstore where alot of ppl bought them im just hoping mine has the better vbios it says its flashed to the 16gb mining bios tho it didnt come with the power adapter cord tho so ill have to find a esp to 2 male pcie cord
yep, I have both vBIOS versions. V100 and CMP. Both are capable of about the same performance but CMPs require considerably more and different overclocking. V100s are a little more plug and play to get max performance.
