We were issued these as aircraft technicians during my time in Cold War Germany, early 1980's. Much handier working around aircraft during Tactical exercises than the FNC1A1. At some point during my career I was issued all 3 of the firearms featured at the beginning of your video, the rifle, sub-machine gun & pistol. Don't ever recall officers carrying SMG's in any Air Force units. Once you became a Sr. NCO, Sgt & above you carried the pistol.
Thank you. I should have said obsolescent rather than obsolete in 1985 as it takes time to phase out a weapon. The Sten Mk. II is an example. The RCN was still using the Sten Mk. II in 1969, long after the SMG C1 began to be issued and I trained on it at sea. The next year I went "Army" (this was soon after the dreaded unification of the forces).
